Joni Mitchell in the jazz era toured the United States with Jaco Pastorius, Michael Brecker, Pat Metheny and others. The soundboard album is here.
“August 25, 1979 Forest Hills performance” is included in this work. This is a stereo sound board recording recorded in the first act of “1979 TOUR OF NORTH AMERICA”. There is also a traditional official version “SHADOWS AND LIGHT” from this tour, but this work is a separate performance. This is Joni Mitchell in 1979. The legendary “UC BERKELEY JAZZ FESTIVAL” also appeared in May, but the tour is in August / September after the release of “MINGUS”. It was held 26 times in total, and the Forest Hills performance of this work is the 14th performance. It was a concert about two weeks before “SHADOWS AND LIGHT”.
This show has long been known for its sound board recordings, but this work is the pinnacle version of it. It was carefully mastered and refined by overseas core enthusiasts. The polishing is not a hamper. The original sound is of a vintage level to the last, and pitch deviations as well as sound fluctuations occur frequently. Moreover, the deviation was like changing randomly. Normally, it would be unavoidable to dismiss it as “thank you for listening” and “type that cannot be fixed”, but the enthusiast who worked on this work was different. We carefully repaired each madness and took several years to create a sense of stability.
In fact, the sound of this work is really wonderful. As expected, the feel of the sound is not comparable to the official version “SHADOWS AND LIGHT”, but the seamless and beautiful reproduction feeling without any discomfort is tremendous. Of course, the stereo sound board’s close contact and the beautifully separated mix are wonderful, and Joni’s singing voice is too gorgeous, and you can fully enjoy the back ensemble.
It is a show that is similar to “SHADOWS AND LIGHT” and is drawn with such a reborn sound. Of course, since it is the same tour, the band is the same, and in addition to Jaco, Brecker, Metheny, Don Alias ​​and Lyle Mays are also available, and THE PERSUASIONS will also appear. However, the set has changed slightly. Here, let’s summarize it while comparing it with the official version.

You can enjoy the band-like performance of the iron wall in detail on the stereo sound board, and take a closer look at “Shadows And Light”, which is drawn more profoundly and magnificently, and “Why Do Fools Fall In Love”, which has a doo-wop flavor. これが1979年のジョニ・ミッチェル。５月には伝説の“UC BERKELEY JAZZ FESTIVAL”出演もありましたが、ツアーは『MINGUS』のリリース後の８月／９月。全26回で実施され、本作のフォレスト・ヒルズ公演は14公演目。『SHADOWS AND LIGHT』の約２週間前にあたるコンサートでした。
このショウは以前からサウンドボード録音が存在することでも知られてきましたが、本作はその最高峰版となるもの。海外のコアマニアが丹念にマスタリングして磨き込んだものなのです。その磨き込みがハンパではない。原音はあくまでヴィンテージ・レベルのものであり、ピッチの狂いはもちろん音揺れも頻発。しかも、ズレ方がランダムに変わるようなものでした。普通であれば「聴けるだけありがたい」「直せないタイプ」で片付けられても仕方ないのですが、本作を手掛けたマニアは違った。１つひとつの狂いを丁寧に修復、数年をかけてビシッとした安定感を生み出したのです。
実際、本作のサウンドは実に素晴らしい。さすがに音の感触は公式盤『SHADOWS AND LIGHT』と比較できるものではないおのの、何の違和感もないシームレスで美しい再生感は絶大。もちろん、ステレオ・サウンドボードのド密着感も綺麗にセパレートしたミックスも素晴らしく、ジョニの歌声も豪華すぎるバックのアンサンブルもたっぷり味わえるのです。
そんな生まれ変わったサウンドで描かれるのは、『SHADOWS AND LIGHT』とは似て非なるショウ。もちろん、同じツアーですからバンドは同一で、ジャコ、ブレッカー、メセニーの他にドン・アライアスやライル・メイズも揃い、さらにTHE PERSUASIONSの面々も登場します。しかし、セットは微妙に変化。ここでは公式盤と比較しながらまとめてみましょう。
