For the past few years, Joni Mitchell’s live recordings have been unearthed, but they are backed by “BUDOKAN 1983” at the 1983 concert “TOKYO 1983 1ST NIGHT”, and Jaco Pastorius and Pat Metheny. I felt that I was concentrating on the sound sources of the early 1980s, such as the finest recording “GREEK THEATER 1979: MIKE MILLARD FIRST GENERATION TAPES” by Mike Millard.
It’s true that they are wonderful, but I think it’s natural to hear from enthusiasts asking if Joni’s stage in a more vintage period could be discovered.
In response to such a voice, the 1976 Nassau Coliseum will be released on CD-R from UXBRIDGE. It is a part of the tour that was carried out with the album “The Hissing of Summer Law”, and a band formed mainly by jazz field musicians led by guitarist Robben Ford who also participated in the 1974 tour. Was accompanied by.

In the fall of this year, Johnny further accelerated the jazz line by encountering Jaco Pastorius, but with regard to the 1976 tour, the sound closer to the traditional folk remains, so it may be called a transitional stage in a good sense. ..
This sound source captures a tour of such a precious time, but this is an ideal vintage audience. Although it is a monaural recording, the performance is captured by a fairly on sound image and is very easy to hear. In addition, the pitch has been adjusted firmly before it is released on the net, making it even easier to hear. In fact, we didn’t have to do anything with this release.
Also, due to the nature of the artist Joni, it is easy to hear that the surroundings become quieter when it comes to quiet performances even in the arena called Nassau Coliseum.
The most attractive thing is the sound of the band that has the jazz color unique to this period, but still respects the traditional Joni’s musicality. I like the modest backing by the members centered around Ford.

What’s even more interesting is the aggressive attitude that has already been added to the stage repertoire up to the new songs that will be included in the next work “Escape” and, on the contrary, the next work “Don Juan’s Recko Horse Girl”. Just looking at the set list shows that Joni’s creativity at that time had reached its peak.
Therefore, before the release of “Coyote”, which will become one of her classics later, it is rather fresh that the reaction of the audience is pale. And while introducing a jazz-oriented sound, when it comes to the two songs before the encore, starting with “Raised On Robbery”, the sound becomes rock-oriented at once, which is also like this tour.
Originally, the first performance in Japan would have been realized two months later, but it was also a time when Joni suffered from acute pneumonia (maybe because he traveled to the United States in the cold season) and did not realize it. Therefore, it is also a valuable sound source that makes you dream of a performance in Japan that ended in illusion. Joni, who appeared after a long time, is a live sound source in the mid-1970s. Enjoy the charming stage of this time with a very good vintage audience to your heart’s content!

確かにそれらは素晴らしいのだけれど、もっとビンテージな時期のジョニのステージも発掘してもらえないだろうか…というマニアからの声、当然だと思います。
そんな声にお応えすべく今回UXBRIDGEからCD-Rにてリリースされるのが1976年のナッソー・コロシアム。それはアルバム「夏草の誘い」を引っ提げて行われたツアーの一環であり、1974年のツアーにも参加していたギタリストのロベン・フォードを中心としたジャズ畑のミュージシャンを中心に結成されたバンドを伴っていました。

この年の秋にはジャコパスとの出会いによってジャズ路線さらに加速するジョニでしたが、76年ツアーに関しては従来のフォーク寄りなサウンドも残っており、いい意味での過度期ステージと呼べるかもしれません。
そんな貴重な時期のツアーを捉えた今回の音源ですが、これぞ理想的なビンテージ・オーディエンス。モノラル録音ですが演奏はかなりオンな音像で捉えられていて非常に聞きやすい。おまけにネット上に公開される前でしっかりとピッチがアジャストされており、聞きやすさがさらに増している。実際、今回のリリースに際しても手を加える必要はありませんでした。
それにジョニというアーティストの性質上、ナッソー・コロシアムというアリーナでも静かな演奏になるとちゃんと周囲が大人しくなってくれるのがまた聞きやすい。
何より魅力的なのは、この時期ならではのジャズ色を漂わせつつも、それでいて従来のジョニの音楽性をリスペクトさせたバンドのサウンド。先のフォードを中心としたメンバーによる控えめなバッキングは好感が持てます。

それ以上に面白いのが、既に次作「逃避行」、それどころか次々回作「ドンファンのじゃじゃ馬娘」に収録されることになる新曲までステージ・レパートリーに加えていた攻めの姿勢。そのセットリストを眺めるだけでも当時のジョニの創作意欲が頂点に達していたことを物語っています。
よって後に彼女のクラシックの一つとなる「Coyote」もここではリリース前、オーディエンスの反応が淡白なのがむしろ新鮮。そしてジャズ寄りなサウンドを導入しつつも「Raised On Robbery」を皮切りとしたアンコール前の二曲になると一気にロック寄りなサウンドとなるのがこれまたこのツアーらしいところ。
本来であれば二か月後に初来日公演が実現していたはずも、ジョニが急性肺炎を患った（寒い時期にアメリカを回ったからでしょうか）せいで実現しなかったという時期でもあった。よって幻に終わった来日公演を夢想させてくれる貴重音源でもある。久々に登場したジョニ1970年代半ばのライブ音源。この時期ならではの魅力満載なステージを非常に良好なビンテージ・オーディエンスにて心ゆくまでお楽しみください！

★リリース当時は今ひとつ評価が低かったものの、現在ではファンの間では、名盤として人気の高い1975年「The Hissing of Summer Lawns/夏草の誘い」発表直後の1976年北米ツアー終盤、2月20日のニューヨーク州ユニオンデールはナッソー・コロシアム公演を高音質AUD音源で収録。アルバム「夏草の誘い」よりの6曲を中心に、次回作「逃避行」に収録される2曲、次々回作「ドンファンのじゃじゃ馬娘」収録の2曲も披露された、熱心なジョニ・ミッチェルのファンには人気のツアー！　バックはロベン・フォードを中心とした新生LAエクスプレスでバンドの演奏も最高！このツアーは過去に、10年以上前に前日のボストン公演がリリースされただけなので、ファンは必聴。
