Joni Mitchell survived a cerebral aneurysm in 2015, but his chances of appearing in public have drastically decreased. Three years later, he showed up at the 75th anniversary event, but he hardly said a word, so he must have been suffering from the aftereffects. I was reminded of that.
However, in 2020, after being interviewed by the media, he recovered to the extent that he explained the current situation, such as that he was working hard on sensible rehabilitation, and that although he still had trouble walking, he was able to speak. Last year, he sent a message from SNS when he released his own archive, and made a remote appearance in an interview with a music producer, showing a surprising recovery.

If Joni, who had difficulty speaking at one point, has recovered so much, I just pray for her health from now on, and I hope she doesn’t overdo it. Fans all over the world hoped that that was enough, but when she made a literal surprise appearance at the Newport Folk Festival in July, the world was shocked. I went around.
This appearance is also called “Joni Jam”, and musicians with acoustic sounds such as Brandy Carlyle and members of Mumford & Sons all came together to support Joni’s comeback.
Thankfully, the entire event was captured on video from the audience, and the image quality and sound quality were amazing. It’s a double surprise because it captures Joni’s expression and singing voice in a state that is really imposing.

The opening “Carey” was Joni who started singing carefully on her stage after a long time, but she regained her condition in no time and sang more and more. I was so happy that I was able to save my life and still be able to talk to you.
However, Joni’s recovery doesn’t stop there. In “Just Like This Train”, she stood up and held an open-tuned electric guitar and even played a guitar that reminded me of her past! This is also a surprise, as it was once said that “I can’t play the guitar”.
In addition, two songs of Joni’s favorite oldies were picked up, and in “Why Do Fools Fall in Love”, which was sung on the past stage, Joni told an episode with Tim Hardin (this scene is also impressive!) In addition, “Love Potion # 9” is a big excitement.
And the ultimate is “Both Sides Now”. The appearance of Brandi Carlyle singing while holding back tears next to Joni who sings so proudly is impressive, and Wynonna Judd, who was singing the chorus behind Joni, cries aloud (because of that, while singing) I’m fixing my makeup lol). A really moving scene was captured at a wonderful angle.

After that, pro-shot videos of three songs were released from the event’s YouTube account, so they were also recorded. In “Just Like This Train”, the appearance of Joni playing the guitar is captured even more clearly, and the excitement in “Big Yellow Taxi” and the state of Joni who sings in the mood are also perfect.
However, “Both Sides Now” did not capture the crying of the surroundings, and the video from the audience was overwhelmingly moving. It may be said that it is no longer a professional shot over video. Take a look at the revival of Joni miracle with such excellent angle and sound quality!

ところが2020年にはメディアの取材を受けて賢明なリハビリに励んでいること、まだ歩行には障害が残っているものの、話せるようにもなった…などと現状を説明してくれるまでに快復。そして昨年は自身のアーカイブ・リリースの際にSNSからメッセージを送ったり、あるいは音楽プロデューサーのインタビューにリモート出演を果たすなど、驚くほどの回復ぶりをみせてくれるようになったのです。

一時は話すのも困難だったジョニがそこまで回復してくれたのであれば、もう後は彼女の健康を祈るばかり、無理はしないでほしい。それで十分…と世界中のファンが願っていたのですが、この7月に行われたニューポート・フォーク・フェスティバルに彼女が文字通りのサプライズ出演を果たしたものだから、世界中に驚きの声が駆け巡りました。
この出演はその名も「Joni Jam」と呼ばれ、ブランディ・カーライルやマムフォード＆サンズのメンバーといったアコースティックなサウンドを身上とするミュージシャンが総出でジョニのカムバックをサポート。
ありがたいことに当日の模様はすべてが客席から撮影された動画でキャッチされたのですが、その画質も音質も驚異的なクオリティ。実に堂々とした様子でジョニの表情や歌声を完璧に近い状態で捉えてくれたものだから二重の驚きと言っていいのでは。

オープニング「Carey」こそ久々のステージで慎重に歌い始めるジョニでしたが、あっという間に調子を取り戻してどんどんノリノリで歌いまくる。もはや一命をとりとめ、なおかつ話してくれるようにまでなっただけでも幸いだったというのに、こんな風に楽しそうに歌ってくれる日が再び訪れるとは！
ところがジョニの回復はそれだけにとどまりません。「Just Like This Train」では何と立ち上がってオープンチューニングのエレキを抱えて往年を偲ばせるようなギターまで聞かせてくれるときた！これもまた一時は「ギターが弾けない」とまで言われていただけに、驚きでしかない。
またジョニお気に入りのオールディーズが二曲取り上げられ、過去のステージでも歌っていた「Why Do Fools Fall in Love」ではティム・ハーディンとのエピソードがジョニによって語られ（この場面も感動！）さらに「Love Potion #9」では大盛り上がり。
そして極めつけは「Both Sides Now」。あまりにも堂々と歌い上げるジョニの横で涙をこらえながら歌うブランディ・カーライルの姿が感動的ですが、さらにジョニの後ろでコーラスしていたワイノナ・ジャッドに至っては号泣する有様（そのせいで歌いながら化粧を直してます笑）。本当に感動的な場面が素晴らしいアングルで捉えられていました。

その後さっそくプロショット映像がイベントのYouTubeアカウントから三曲公開されていますのでそちらも併せて収録。「Just Like This Train」では信じられないほど堂々とギターを弾くジョニの姿がさらに克明に捉えられていますし、「Big Yellow Taxi」での盛り上がりとノリノリに歌ってくれるジョニの様子もばっちり。
ところが「Both Sides Now」の方は周囲が号泣する様子があまり捉えられておらず、何と客席からの動画の方が圧倒的に感動するアングルとなっているのです。もはやプロショット越え映像と言っていいかもしれません。それほどまで優れたアングルと音質でジョニ奇跡の復活を刮目せよ！
