Scandinavian metal hero John Norum. Introducing a live album and video set containing his precious early solos.

John who made a name for himself in EUROPE and withdrew due to disgust with the popularity of idols. His solo career features a variety of music as if to imitate his master Gary Moore. Among them, it was the early days that was full of the brilliance of Scandinavian metal. I will stab his masterpiece “TOTAL CONTROL”. These two early performances are included in this work. “March 19, 1988 London performance” and “February 13, 1988 Gothenburg performance”. Let’s introduce each in detail.

[Disc 1: The best live album of the London performance] The first live album to appear is the main live album. It is the best audience recording at the traditional famous venue “Hammersmith Odeon” that appeared as the undercard of FREHLEY’S COMET. This recording was made by the famous recording artist “Crazy S.”. Directly made into a CD from his treasured original master. This week, FREELEY’S COMET’s masterpiece “HAMMERSMITH ODEON 1988 (Shades 923)” will be released at the same time, but this disc was recorded continuously at the same venue on the same day.

The sound is truly a masterpiece. It must be an audience recording with plenty of realism, but the atmosphere is very transparent and shines in crystal clear. The most amazing thing is the direct feeling. There is almost no distance, and the performance and singing voice are so vivid that you can hit them right in front of you. Mr. “Crazy S.” has realized a straight ball sound in outdoor festivals with zero echo such as MONSTERS OF ROCK and MILTON KEYNES and in a narrow club, but the site of this work is Hammer Smith Odeon in the indoor hall. In spite of this, I capture it with the same direct feeling as outdoors and club gigs.

The brilliant and extra-thick quality is drawn with the essence of Scandinavian metal, which is more dazzling than the sound. The official live EP “LIVE IN STOCKHOLM” is left from this tour, but after all it is EP. I could only listen to 4 songs live. On the other hand, this work is almost full recording (although there is a tape change cut). Full of famous songs that could not be heard on the EP. Not only can you hear a lot of “TOTAL CONTROL” numbers such as “Love Is Meant To Last Forever”, “Someone Else Here”, “Back On The Streets” and “Let Me Love You”, but also EUROPE’s “Heart Of Stone” and “Scream Of Anger” You can even enjoy it.

And the performance of playing such a famous song rush is also the best. After all, the backing is Marcel Jacob, Henpo Hilden who crosses DON DOKKEN / MIDNIGHT SUN, and Yoran “Mr. Scandinavian voice” Edman. Marcel’s often sung bassline and John’s entanglement is also the best, but after all attention is Yoran’s singing voice. Not only the two songs that took the lead in the studio, but also “Back On The Streets” and “Blind” sang with a wet and beautiful voice. And, after all, EUROPE’s “Heart Of Stone” and “Scream Of Anger”! Joey Tempest’s voice is also a symbol of Scandinavia, but the wonderfulness of another masterpiece colored by the Scandinavian voice ……. These two songs alone are well worth listening to.

[Disc 2: Shots of people involved in the Gothenburg performance] Such a superb live album also comes with a bonus audience shot. This was taken on “February 13, 1988”. This is the day before the official EP “LIVE IN STOCKHOLM”.

Although it is a quality with dubbing marks, this is not just a thing. Although the first two songs are images from the audience, the angles that occupy most of the show after the third song are shots of the people involved. It was shot from the camera pit just below the stage, and you can see plenty of professional shots at hand and facial expression zoom, not to mention the absence of the audience. Furthermore, unlike audience shots where you cannot move from a fixed position, you can freely move the camera pit to the right or left. Furthermore, when the main part of the set is over, we enter the dressing room, and when it becomes an encore, we finally go on stage with the members. It’s a one-shot, but it’s a pro-shot look.

Furthermore, I am happy with the long recording that exceeds Disc 1. As mentioned above, the London performance was the opening act of FREELEY’S COMET, but this is a solo full show. In addition to the solo time of guitar and bass, the number of famous songs has been increased. Moreover, the contents are amazing. “We’ll Do What It Takes Together” of “TOTAL CONTROL” is also nice, but “Good Man Shining” recorded in the next work “FACE THE TRUTH”, “Play Yard Blues” with (a little) vocals, TALISMAN “Women, Whiskey & Song” will also be shown. Moreover, it is Yoran who sings “Good Man Shining” and “Women, Whiskey & Song”. It is a masterpiece video that can be enjoyed from the perspective of the people concerned, even to the extremely rare version before the announcement.

The “TOTAL CONTROL” era, when he was voicing as a standard-bearer of Scandinavian metal and as a successor to Gary and Michael Schenker. It is a 2-disc set that you can taste the full show with the best sound live album and witness it with the shots of the people concerned. After that, John expands the range of sounds with his honest curiosity, but it is hard to replace it with anything in this era. I wanted you to push forward with this organization with Yoran …. Sounds and spectacles that bring even such new feelings. It is a valuable gem that I would like people who love Scandinavian metal like that crystal to touch.

「Love Is Meant To Last Forever」「Someone Else Here」「Back On The Streets」「Let Me Love You」といった『TOTAL CONTROL』ナンバーが大量に聴けるだけでなく、EUROPEの「Heart Of Stone」「Scream Of Anger」まで楽しめるのです。

そして、何と言ってもEUROPEの「Heart Of Stone」「Scream Of Anger」!

『TOTAL CONTROL』の「We’ll Do What It Takes Together」も嬉しいものの、次作『FACE THE TRUTH』に収録される「Good Man Shining」や(ちょっとだけ)ヴォーカル入りの「Play Yard Blues」、TALISMANの「Women, Whiskey & Song」も披露されるのです。しかも、「Good Man Shining」「Women, Whiskey & Song」を歌うのはヨラン。
