ディスク1の最後は「パワー・トゥ・ザ・ピープル」、邦題は「人々に勇気を」の4バージョンである。シングルのジャケット写真ではジョンは共産主義者同盟叛旗派のヘルメットを被っている。もちろん思想的に新左翼の学生運動と関連はないが、まさにこの時期のジョンは左翼に分類される政治活動を行なっていたものだ。バージョン1から3では世界中の反体制運動やデモのニュース映像を交えつつ「POWER TO THE PEOPLE」というメッセージを前面に出したものとなっている。このような政治的な事にジョンがどれほど真剣に関心を持っていたのか定かではないが、このような政治色の強い使われ方を望んでいたとは思えないのだが。バージョン4はジョンの映像や写真を交え、途中にジョンやヨーコのインタビューを挿入するなど凝った作りとなっている。

【ディスク2】
ディスク2は「イマジン」から始まる。おそらくジョンレノンを知らない人でもこの曲は聴いた事があるのではないか、それくらい普遍的な輝きを放つ名曲として位置づけられている。個人的にはロックではない楽曲がジョンの代表曲とされる事に違和を感じているが、もはや「ジョンレノンの」という前提が不要なくらい、楽曲が独り歩きして人類の共有財産となっている名曲である事に異論はない。本作には実に7バージョンものプロモが収録されているが、基本的にジョンの自宅でヨーコと二人ピアノに座っている映像が使用されている。草木生い茂る庭を通りドアの前で消える二人、そしてヨーコが一枚づつ扉を開けることで光が徐々に室内に差し込む清潔な美しさ、そしてピアノに座り無垢な表情で歌うジョン。そのどれもが芸術的な美しさ、映像美を備えており、名曲にして名プロモである。唯一例外がバージョン4で、ニューヨークの街並みが窓から見える部屋が次々に流れていき、その部屋ごとにそれぞれの人生模様があることを伺わせるメッセージ性溢れるものとなっている。全てワン・カメラで撮影されており、その手法はヒッチコックの「ロープ」を想起させる作りとなっている。

「ジェラスガイ」は4バージョン収録されている。和訳すると「嫉妬深い男」というタイトルで、ジョンレノンともあろう人物が自らを嫉妬深いと正直に吐露している事に驚く。まだポールと知り合う前のリンダがジョンのファンであったことは有名であるが、リンダがジョンと初めて会った時に「優れた芸術家だと思っていたが、実際に会うと完全に自信を失った、ただの神経質な男だった」と述懐している。まさにそれはジョンの本質であろうが、それを自らの言葉で赤裸々に告白するところもジョンの魅力であろう。私たちがジョンレノンに惹かれるのは、このような身を削るような正直な心情の吐露が楽曲に反映されている点であり、ポールにはない「ジョンの世界観」がこの曲に凝縮されている気がするのである。いずれもベースとなっているのはスタジオにおける同曲のレコーディングの映像である。そこにキャバーン・クラブでの演奏シーンなどビートルズ時代から晩年に至る様々な映像が挿入され、曲調も相まって非常にセンチメンタルで感動的なプロモ映像となっている。

「真実が欲しい」はアルバム『イマジン』のB面を飾る最重要曲である。ハードなギターに乗せてジョンならではの韻を踏んだ言葉の羅列。流れるように繰り返されるリフに乗せてメロディを歌唱のみで紡ぐスタイルはボウイの「ヒーローズ」に多大な影響を与えたのではと思わせられる。ゲット・バック・セッションで既に試行されていた曲であるが、それが数年後にこのような素晴らしいロックに変貌するとは。プロモ映像ではスタジオで歌詞カードを見ながら感情を込め、顔をしかめつつ身体を逸らして歌うジョンの姿に、恐ろしく鬼気迫るものを感じる。

「ハウ？」「オー・マイ・ラヴ」「兵隊にはなりたくない」「ハウ・ドゥー・ユー・スリープ」「愛するヨーコ」の5曲は全てジョンのプライベート映像をベースに作られている。映画「イマジン」の監督アンドリュー・ソルトは映像素材をヨーコから受け取った際に「一人の人間の人生がこれだけ膨大に映像として残されていたのに驚いた」と回想しているが、実際にジョンとヨーコの映像記録は膨大な量があり、まるで日記のように意図的に記録として残していたとしか思えない。これら5曲の映像も、そのような映像素材から作られたものである。続く「クリップル・インサイド」のプロモ映像はアルバム『イマジン』のアルバム用の写真を撮影している様子を映した映像がメインとなっている。「イッツ・ソー・ハード」は黒装束に身を包んだ怪しい男（ジョン？）がニューヨークの街を歩く不気味なものである。

「ハッピークリスマス」はクリスマス時期の定番であり、毎年12月になるとクリスマスの雰囲気を彩る街の風景のひとつとなっている曲である。サブタイトルの「戦争は終わった」はクリスマスとの関連性が希薄だが、前線にいる兵士であれクリスマスは銃後の生活に戻り家族と共に過ごす季節であるという意味も含有されているのであろう。特に後半のコーラス「War is over, if you want it」はジョンとヨーコが巨大看板を設置したくらい彼らの創造した象徴的なキャッチコピーである。そのキャッチを歌詞に織り込んだことで、字面以上の意味をこの言葉にもたらしたと言える。プロモは3種存在する。バージョン1は宗教彫像の写真が数多く含まれており、いささか難解なものである。バージョン2は世界平和を歌っている歌詞に反し、家族生活を中心としたプライベート写真が主にコラージュされている。コーラスを歌っている子供たちが全員ブラックである点に作り手のあざとさを感じないでもない。そしてバージョン3は最も政治色の強いものとなっている。紛争地帯で死にゆく子供たち、戦場に生きる人々、犠牲者に涙する男性、爆撃に逃げ惑う民間人、そして兵士たち、最後はガンジーの言葉で締めくくられる。

「マインド・ゲームス」は2バージョン収録されている。バージョン1は黒いロングコートを来たジョンがニューヨークを闊歩する映像がメインに使われている。このプロモ映像を見るとジョンがいかに自由にアメリカでの生活をエンジョイしていたかが伺える。バージョン2はセントラル・パークを笑顔で歩くジョンの姿が印象的なプロモである。サインをねだるファンや出店で買い物をする様子や、動物園で像とたわむれる様子など、実に楽しい映像となっている。「夢の夢」も2バージョン収録されており、バージョン2はビートルズ「リアル・ラヴ」と類似のコンセプトで作られている。

【ディスク3】
ディスク3の最初は「真夜中を突っ走れ」5バージョンである。エルトンジョンの協力を得てジョンにとって初の全米ナンバー1ヒットとなった曲である。曲調はいかにもエルトンが歌いそうな軽快なもので、実際にジョンとエルトンのダブル・ヴォーカルが際立っている。この曲がナンバー1ヒットとなったらコンサートに飛び入りしてくれるかいとエルトンから提案があり、絶対にありえないと判断したジョンは快諾。しかし予想に反して見事ナンバー1となるのであった。そこでマジソン・スクエアー・ガーデンのコンサートにジョンが飛び入り、その楽屋でヨーコと再開することにより復縁を果たすというエピソードが残されている。ジョンにとって初の、そして生前唯一のシングル・ナンバー1ヒットとあってプロモも数多くのバージョンが存在する。バージョン1と4、そして5はセントラルパークを黒のロングコートで散策するお馴染みの映像をベースとしたもの。バージョン2と3はジョンの手書きのイラストがアニメとなって動く映像がメインとなっている。おそらく元はラフな線描であろうが、きちんと着色されイキイキと動かせる技術には目を見張るものがある。

「スリッピン・アンド・スライディン」「スタンド・バイ・ミー」はそれぞれリトルリチャードとベンＥキングのカバーである。スタジオ・ライヴ形式をとっている。映像はほぼジョンの顔のアップという変化の乏しいものではあるが、ジョンが実際に歌っている貴重な映像である。ジョンが幼い頃から親しんできた古いロックンロールのカバー曲ということで、のびのびと楽しそうに歌っているのが手に取るようにわかって微笑ましい。「スタンド・バイ・ミー」の間奏のパートでジョンがギターの音色を口で「パッパ～」と追ってみたり、バージョン1では「英国のみんなこんにちは！俺は今ニューヨークから挨拶してるぜ！」と語りを入れているのも面白いところである。

そしていよいよジョンレノン生前最後のアルバム「ダブル・ファンタジー」関連のプロモである。「スターティング・オーヴァー」は2バージョンを収録している。「1950年代のロックンロールを、1980年代風にアプローチした曲」というジョンのインタビューにある通り、素晴らしいロックンロールの名曲であり、40歳を境に新たな人生を歩もうというジョンの気持ちが伝わってくる。ご存知の通りその後の人生はなかったわけだが、政治色を拝し80年代の新しいロックンロールを歌うジョンがどうなっていくか、それを見ることが出来ないのが残念でならない。バージョン1はジョンとヨーコのプライベート映像をふんだんに盛り込み、最後は公園のベンチで佇むヨーコとショーンのツーショットで締めくくられる。それが意図するところはやはり父の不在であろう。バージョン2はジョンとヨーコの古い写真や想い出の品が誰もいない部屋に散乱しており、それが風に乗って揺れ動いたり、眼鏡が割れたりと、果てには空を舞ったりと、イメージを積み重ねて曲の世界を表現する「フリー・アズ・ア・バード」と同じコンセプトのプロモ映像となっている。

「ウォッチング・ザ・ホイールズ」は沈黙の5年間に対するジョンの返答が歌詞となっており、死後にシングルカットされた曲である。歌詞に呼応するかのように、まだ幼きショーンを抱えて主夫業に勤しむジョンの映像がベースに作られている。1975年から80年までのジョンの生活は完全にプライベートなもので、その一端が知られるようになったのはジョンの死後のことである。パンをこねる様子や遊園地で遊ぶ様子、誕生日にショーンと一緒に蝋燭を吹き消したり、また日本で買い物をする様子など、ヨーコが提供したであろう家族の記録映像がベースとなっている。このプロモを見るといかに天下のジョンレノンであろうと、子供の前では一介の父親に過ぎない、そんな当たり前のことが感慨深く思われる。

「ウーマン」はヨーコを代表する世の中の女性に対して歌った美しいバラードで、CMなどで使用されたからか日本でも知名度が高い曲のひとつである。生活を切り取って曲にする手法を採るジョンにとって、別居時代もあったけれど結局はヨーコの下に帰る、そういった二人の不可分な愛情の一端が美しく澄み切った声で歌われる。プロモ映像はもちろんヨーコと一緒の映像がメインで、特に秋のセントラルパークを連れ立って歩く様子が美しい。死後に発表されたこともあり、ジョンの死去を伝える新聞や、まさに「その後」の写真をコラージュするなど、いささか悪趣味なものも含まれている。映像の最後には「To Be Continued」という文字が現れ、意味深な終わり方をする。どうでも良いことだが、ヨーコが喫煙者だというのがこの映像からわかる。

「ビューティフル・ボーイ」は、そのままショーンを歌った曲で、ワーキングの段階では歌詞に何度もショーンが登場している。休暇で訪れた湖畔で家族が食事をしている映像が終始使用されており、カメラを据え置いて回したままにしているようだ。まだ小さなショーンがちょこちょこ可愛らしく動き回っており、そしてショーンを喜ばせるためにおどけた仕草を見せるジョンは、まるでもう一人の子供のようだ。

「アイム・ステッピング・アウト」と「ボロウド・タイム」の2曲は死後に未発表曲を集めて制作された「ミルク・アンド・ハニー」に収録の曲である。死後に作られたとあって、もちろん歌っている映像ではなく、数多く撮影されていたジョンの映像を使用して後年作られたものである。「アイム・ステッピング・アウト」は2バージョン収録。ここで見る事のできるヨーコとショーンの映像はこの時点でのリアルタイムのもので、いくぶん大きく成長したショーンの姿が数多く収録されている。このような息子の姿をジョンに見せてあげたいものだ。また断片的に挿入される演奏するシーンは現在でも未発表のライヴ映像や、ワン・トゥ・ワン・コンサートのリハーサルの映像なども含まれている。それにしても、映像自体は数多くあるのだろうから、もっと過去のプロモ映像と重複しないものを選別して欲しいと思う。「ボロウド・タイム」は4バージョンを収録している。植物の発芽の様子をスピード・カメラで撮影したオープニングの後、これまたジョンとヨーコのスナップ映像となっている。フィル・スペクターとのレコーディングの様子や、ジョージ・ハリスンも同席した食事の様子などの映像も見られる。興味深いのはジョンが甚平を着用している点であろう。

【ディスク4】
そしてこれが最後のディスクである。引き続き「ミルク・アンド・ハニー」からの収録である。「ノーバディ・トールド・ミー」はアルバムの中でも最もキャッチ―でジョンらしいロックンロール、こちらも「スターティング・オーヴァー」同様に古いロックンロールを現代風にアレンジしたかのような曲調に仕上がっている。本作には同曲を3バージョンを収録している。そしてアルバムで最も重要な曲として位置づけられているのが「グロウ・オールド・ウィズ・ミー」である。いかにもデモ録音で元々の音質はけして良いものではなく、ジョンが生きていたらもっときちんと再録音したであろうが、一緒に年齢を重ねて行こうと語りかけるジョンの歌詞には普遍的な価値があり、これは音質に関わらず発表すべきだとヨーコが判断したのも理解できる。既に鬼籍に入った人物から一緒に年齢を重ねていこうなどと語られる不思議さ、改めてジョンに続きの人生があったならと思う。

「男は誰もが」（Every Man Has a Woman Who Loves Him）はアルバム「ダブル・ファンタジー」にはヨーコのヴォーカル曲として収録されていたが、ここに収録のものはジョンがヴォーカルを採るバージョンである。ジョンやヨーコは一切登場せず、モノクロ映像で二人の男女の邂逅を描いたものとなっている。「アイム・ルージング・ユー」はジョンのイラストをアニメにして、それをバックにチープ・トリックが演奏するというバージョンである。このプロモは1998年に制作されたもので、ベースはトムではない。同時にこのプロモ・フィルムのメイキングも収録されている。「オンリー・ユー」はジョンがリンゴにプレゼントした曲で、当然、本作にはジョンが歌うバージョンが収録されている。

ここからはジョン本人ではなく関連した曲のプロモ映像になる。「ウォーキング・オン・シン・アイス」はヨーコが歌う曲で、ジョンが死去したまさにその日にレコーディングしていた曲だと伝えられる。ニューヨークの街を闊歩する若きヨーコがかっこいい。「Goodbye Sadness」もヨーコの曲で、プロモ映像ではマンハッタンからリバティ島に渡るフェリーの中からニューヨークの高層ビル街を眺めるジョンとヨーコの映像などが使用されている。「平和を我等に」は1991年に制作されたもので、レニークラヴィッツというジョンレノンのフォロワーと、成長して子供から少年になったショーン、そしてヨーコ本人も登場している。続いて「イマジン」は2014年にユニセフ主導のイマジン・プロジェクトの一環として制作されたもので、ジョン本人の映像も含まれているが、主に様々な人々が人種国籍を問わずワン・フレーズづつ歌っている映像を構成して1つの曲としている。プロジェクトの性格上、数多くのバージョンが存在し、本作には実に5バージョンも収録されている。

そしてディスク4の最後がテレビ・コマーシャルの映像である。こちらもかなりレアな映像である。まずハリーニルソンのアルバム「PUSSY CATS」のコマーシャル映像である。「愛の壁、心の橋」「ロックンロール」「ミルク・アンド・ハニー」「ジョンレノン・コレクション」の、それぞれリリース当時のテレビCMも珍しいものである。「愛の壁、心の橋」のCMナレーションはリンゴが担当している。今では考えられないが、当時のアメリカではこのようなアルバム・セールスを促すテレビCMが流されていたというのが興味深い。このような習慣は現在でも行なわれており、近年のレノン・レジェンドやジョン・レノン・アンソロジーのCMも収録されている。珍しいのはジョンがナレーションを務めるタワーレコードのCMが存在するという点である。どういった経緯でジョンがナレーションを担当することになったのかは不明だが、ビートルズのメンバーがある特定の企業の宣伝を行なうというのは異例のことであろう。そして更にレアなのがアルバム「ルーツ」のテレビCMである。しかも2バージョンが収録されている。ご存知の通りジョンの訴えにより発売中止になった幻のアルバムである。通販のみでリリースされたいうから不思議ではないのだが、権利関係がうるさいアメリカでこのように大々的にテレビCMが打たれていたという事実が驚きである。

【コンプリート・プロモ・クリップ・コレクション】
ジョンのプロモ映像というのは短い活動期間に比して非常に膨大な量が存在する。その全てを本作は収録している。そして楽曲のプロモ映像のみならず、関連する映像、特にテレビ・コマーシャルの映像などは当時の全米で放送された貴重なものばかりである。ジョンが死して既に四半世紀が経過したが、楽曲の素晴らしさだけでなく、ジョン自身の愛すべき個性、ジョンレノンそのものが作品であって、楽曲はジョンの魅力の一部に過ぎない、それが故に我々の心に深く入り込んでくるのであろう。ぜひ、このジョンのプロモ映像を通して、ソロ時代のジョンの魅力を改めて再認識していただきたい。美しいピクチャー・ディスク仕様の永久保存がっちりプレス盤。日本語帯付。
