本作は、その限られたジョンのライヴ・パフォーマンスを映像で集約したものである。映像で見ることができるジョンのソロ時代のライヴは本作で全て網羅されている。CD3枚組で「COMPLETE LIVE LENNON TAPES」というタイトルがあったが、その映像版である。ただしONE TO ONE CONCERTに関しては、やはりMクローデル・レーベルよりリハーサルを含めた音と映像のセットがリリースされているので割愛されている。

【LIVE PEACE IN TORONTO】
1969年9月13日にトロントで行なわれたライヴである。この時点ではまだビートルズは解散しておらず、しかし心は既に離れていた時期のジョンのステージである。バックメンバーにはエリック・クラプトンやクラウス・ヴアマンなどを配し、さらにヨーコも同じステージに上がっている。この時の様子は公式に映像がリリースされているが、本作に収録の映像はそれとはカットが異なるラフ・カット映像である。

【UNICEF GALA】
これもまたビートルズ現役時代の1969年12月15日ロンドンにおけるライヴである。ステージにはエリック・クラプトンの他、ハンチング帽を被ったジョージ・ハリスンの姿も見える。『サムタイム・イン・ニューヨークシティ』にも音源のみ収録されているが、これはその映像版である。「冷たい七面鳥」と「京子ちゃん心配しないで」の2曲の演奏シーンを見ることができる。また、後半は音声が入っていないサイレント・フィルムであるが、当日の様子を伝えるニュース映像も収録されている。ニュース映像らしく、演奏シーンのみならず、入場の際にドネーションをする客の様子などが含まれている。

【TOP OF THE POPS】
こちらはテレビ番組に出演時の映像である。プロモ・フィルムとしても流用されている映像であり、オケはテープだと思われるが、ヴォーカルはきちんとしたライヴである。TOP OF THE POPSにおける「インスタントカーマ」は2テイク存在し、非常に似ているものの、それぞれが別ヴォーカルであるのはもちろんであるが、衣装も異なるので見分けは付きやすいであろう。短髪のジョンが一生懸命に魂を込めて歌う様子が胸を打つ。ジョンが歌っている横で、ヨーコは目隠しをして編み物をしているなど、パフォーマンス性の高い映像である。

【FRANK ZAPPA CONCERT】
こちらも『サムタイム・イン・ニューヨークシティ』に音源のみ収録されていた1971年6月6日フィルモア・イーストにおけるフランクザッパのコンサートに登場した時の映像である。ヨーコと共にステージに登場したジョンは、まさにイマジンのジャケットと同じくらいの髪の長さで、ビートルズ時代さながらにギターを弾きながら顎を上げてマイクに絡みつくように歌っている。タイムコードが入っている流出映像で、ワンカメラということもあり、おそらく関係者の記録用の映像であろう。「Jamrag」や「Scumbag」など、音源だけでは何をやっているかよくわからなかった曲も、パフォーマンスを含め映像で見ることが出来る。「Au」に至ってはハウリングとヨーコの叫びという前衛的な、曲というよりも完全なるパフォーマンスで、これはぜひ映像でなければわからないものである。

【JOHN SINCLAIR FREEDOM RALLY】
微罪で投獄されたジョン・シンクレアという人物を助けるためのチャリティとして行なわれたのが1971年12月10日ジョン・シンクレア救済コンサートである。当時のニューアルバム『サムタイム・イン・ニューヨークシティ』の収録の曲は、ジョンがこのようにステージに出ていた時期と重なり、多くがライヴで披露されている。このコンサートもその内のひとつであり、ヨーコがヴォーカルを採る「Sisters O Sisters」を含む4曲を披露している。ディスク1はこのジョンシンクレア救済コンサートがハイライトと言ってもよい。映像として3バージョン収録されており、まず最初が当時テレビで放映された白黒バージョン。2バージョン目がカラーのフィルム・プリント・バージョンである。画質はクリアで鮮やかなカラーなのにおどろかされる。3バージョン目はカラーのTVプリント・バージョン。番組ロゴが重なっているのが残念だが、本作はこの3バージョンを全て収録した初めてのタイトルとなる。

【DAVID FROST SHOW】
1971年12月16日テレビ・ショウに出演した時の映像である。「The Ballad Of New York City」はデヴィッド・ピールによる歌と演奏で、ジョンとヨーコはバック・バンドのひとりとして参加している。その後、ジョンはステージの前部に座ったままで3曲をアコースティックで歌っている。再びデヴィッド・ピールの「Hippie From New York City」で番組は締めくくられる。もちろんここでもジョンとヨーコは演奏に参加している。

ここからがディスク2になる。アッティカ刑務所で起きた暴動事件に絡めて、人権問題を提起するために1971年12月17日に行なわれたチャリティ・コンサートである。タイトル通りの「Attica State」に加え、ヨーコの「Sisters O Sisters」の他、初めて「イマジン」がライヴ演奏されている。カメラマンがステージ上で撮影しているのであろう、アップが中心の非常に近い映像で、時として後ろからも撮影されている。「Attica State」のみ白黒で、「Sisters O Sisters」と「イマジン」はカラーで収録されている。余談になるが、マーク・チャップマンは現在アッティカ刑務所に収監されているそうである。

【MIKE DUGLAS SHOW】
こちらはシリーズで同番組に出演した時の映像である。収録日はジャケットの記載を参照して欲しい。後にONE TO ONE CONCERTに繋がるバンド「エレファンツ・メモリー」を従えてのライヴである。冒頭で司会者から、この新しいバンドの事、名前の由来などの質問を受け、ジョンは真摯に応えている。興味深い曲としては「It’s So Hard」を演奏している点であろう。この時の手応えからONE TO ONEでもセットリストに加えられたと考えられる。そしてヨーコは日本語で「さくらさくら」を歌っているのも面白い。歌う前にこの曲の意味を長く述べている。

【AQUARIUS】
1972年3月11日に収録されたもので、ジョンはホテルかどこかの部屋で、印象的な音色を奏でるスティール・ギターのみで歌っている。「ブリング・オン・ザ・ルーシー」は『マインド・ゲームス』に収録の曲で、同アルバムで唯一生演奏された曲であるが、サビの部分のみで、すぐに「Attica State」に移行してしまうのが残念。

1972年3月3日に同番組に出演した際のライヴである。ここで初めて「女は世界の奴隷か」を演奏している。バンドがチープなためスタジオ・バージョンのような壮大さは感じられないが、バック・バンドの稚拙さを差し引いてもジョンのヴォーカルの魅力は充分に伝わってくる。比較的落ち着いて歌っているのが、いかにもスタジオ・ライヴっぽい。「We’re All Water」を歌うヨーコも実に楽しそうだ。

【EYEWITNESS NEWS】
こちらは1972年8月12日に収録されたもので、ジョンはオールディーズ・ナンバー、特にジョンとポールの共通のヒーローであるバディ・ホリーの曲を採り上げている。そして最後にオリジナル「女は世界の奴隷か」をシンプルにギターのみで歌う。曲の合間にヨーコが何か合いの手的にコメントを挿入している。はっきり言って邪魔でしかないが、これもまたジョンが良しとしたものなので、ファンとしては受け入れなければならないだろう。同曲の別バージョンとして興味深いものではある。

【JERRY LEWIS LABOR DAY】
1966年から2014年まで、アメリカの労働者の日に併せて毎年チャリティ・テレビ・キャンペーンが行なわれていた。1972年9月6日に行なわれたそのキャンペーンにジョンが出演した時の映像である。このライヴは長らく映像で見ることは出来ず、イベントなどで放映されるのみであった。残念ながら完全収録ではなく、「イマジン」と「平和を我らに」をダイジェストで見れるのみである。本作にはカラーと白黒の両方のバージョンが収録されている。特にカラー・バージョンは珍しく、いかにもラスベガス的な派手なステージを鮮やかなカラーで見ることができる。しかも白黒バージョンよりも長く収録されているのが特長である。

【ELTON JOHN THANKING CONCERT】
ご存知1974年11月28日エルトンジョンのコンサートに飛び入りした時の映像である。エルトンジョンと一緒にレコーディングした「真夜中をぶっ飛ばせ」がナンバー1になったらコンサートに飛び入りしてくれと冗談で話していたのが、本当にナンバー1になってしまった。その時の約束を履行するためにジョンが登場したのである。長髪に黒いスーツでスラリとしたジョンがカッコイイ。観客もまさかジョンレノンが登場するとは思わず、非常に驚いたであろう。

【OLD GREY WHSTLE TEST】
こちらは有名なテレビ出演で「Stand By Me」と「Slippin’ And Slidin’」を演奏した時の映像である。放送されたものではなく、ジョンの指示とカチンコから収録されている流出映像である。映像はほとんどジョンのアップで変化に乏しいものであるが、活動停止直前のジョンが、自分の大好きなオールディーズを楽しそうに歌う様子は非常に微笑ましい。「Stand By Me」の間奏ではジョンの語りが入る。

【SALUTE TO SIR LEW GRADE】
そしてジョンが公の前で演奏した最後の姿が、1975年4月18日、このSALUTE TO SIR LEW GRADEである。ディナーショウのように丸テーブルで正装の紳士淑女が食事をしている前で歌うという、およそジョンが毛嫌いしそうなシチュエーションでのライヴである。一説によるとマーク・チャップマンが客席にいるとも言われているが、映像からはどれがチャップマンかは視認することが出来ない。ジョンは真っ赤な衣装で髪を後ろで束ねて手を振りながら登場。バックバンドは後頭部にも顔のお面を配した不気味な格好をしている。後付けの知識があるからだろうが、一種の死の匂いを感じてしまう。

ジョンレノンがビートルズ解散前夜から行なったライヴ・パフォーマンスの残された映像を網羅した『COMPLETE LIVE LENNON FILMS』。ポールに比べ、ジョンのライヴがこれだけしかないのはファンとしては非常に残念でならず、もっと精力的にツアーなど行なってくれていたらと思わざるを得ないが、それもジョンが選んだ道である。それでも単発ながらこれだけ数多くのライヴを行なっていたというのが、こうしてまとめてみるとよくわかる。ぜひライヴ・パフォーマーとしてのジョンの魅力を本作で再確認してみて欲しい。美しいピクチャー・ディスク仕様の永久保存がっちりプレス盤。日本語帯付。
