ZEP解散後の各メンバーのソロ・キャリアというのは何かと見過ごされがちなものですが、ペイジに関して言うと1988年のソロ・アルバム「OUTRIDER」ほど見過ごされている時期はないでしょう。ZEP解散後に彼が出した映画のサウンドトラック、あるいはザ・ファームと違い、ペイジがソロで一枚のロック・アルバムとして作り上げた作品としては現在に至るまで唯一なもの。
当然リリース当初は盟友プラントの参加などもあって大きな話題を呼びましたが、その話題性とは裏腹にアトランティック・レコードのイベントでのZEP再結成などがアルバム・リリースのすぐ後に実現してしまったことから、内容が正当に評価されずに終わってしまったきらいがあります。その実はペイジのソングライターとしての才能やギター・プレイヤーとしての冴えが前面に押し出されつつ、それでいて80年代らしくコンパクトにまとめられたロックの名盤だったのです。
このアルバムやリリース後のツアーに関してはペイジ自身も思い入れがあるようで、当店を訪れた際には定番のアリゾナではなく、何とオーディエンス・ショットのナッソー・コロシアムやニュー・ヘイブンの映像を見入ってしまうほど。実際1980年代のロック・アクトとしては一級品のパフォーマンスを聞かせており、ペイジとしてもこのツアーやバンドを誇りに感じていることは明らかでした。

「OUTRIDER」リリース後、1988年の後半を費やして行われたツアーでキー・パーソンとなったのはボーカルのジョン・マイルズ。プラントと比較してしまうZEPマニアには何かと批判の対象とされてきましたが、今聴いてみてビックリ。何とも素晴らしい声の持ち主ではないですか。ファームの時のポール・ロジャースほど個性が強くなく、それでいてプラントとはまったく違うボーカリストとしての魅力。いい意味で80年代っぽいポップさとシャウターとしての資質を兼ね備えていた点を今になって思い知らされます。ペイジ自身も「OUTRIDER」リリース時に「素晴らしい声の持ち主だ」と絶賛していただけのことはあります。
彼の歌声やツアーバンドの魅力、そして何よりも弾きまくってみせたペイジの様子をダイジェストながらも素晴らしい音質で伝えてくれたのがラジオ音源「Westwood One Superstars Rock Concert Series」。最高のステレオ・サウンドボード録音ということから過去にも「EMERALD EYES」や「MIDNIGHT MOONLIGHT」といった有名タイトルを生み出してはきたものの、ここ十年以上に渡って「OUTRIDER」ツアーが見過ごされてしまったことから、手軽にゲットできるアイテムが姿を消してしまいました。

そこで今回はネット上でおなじみジョー・マロニーが所有していたエアチェック音源をこれまた最近ネット上でおなじみ「KRW&CO」が丁寧にトランスファーしてみせたバージョンを元にCD化。いかにもラジオ音源らしい仕上がりとクリアネスがペイジ以下の躍動するプレイを最高の音質で捉えてくれました。過去のアイテムのようなイコライズ、あるいは散見される放送用ディスクのスクラッチ・ノイズなどがほとんど皆無であり、新たな決定版と呼ぶにふさわしい限定のプレスCDタイトルに仕上がっています。
全編に渡って本当に素晴らしい演奏が詰め込まれていますが、これはツアー中盤で行われたオハイオ州での二公演からの抜粋というというのも功を奏したのでしょう。おまけにジョン・マイルズは「Over The Hills And Far Away」をアルバム・バージョンのメロディで軽々と歌い上げてみせるのが凄い。ライブを毎晩インストゥルメンタルの「Stairway To Heaven」で締めくくっていたことは当時から大きな話題を呼びましたが、「In My Time Of Dying」を「PHYSICAL GRAFFITI」のアルバム・バージョンと同じキーで演奏している点も非常にレアでしかもいい感じの演奏。
アトランティック・レコード・イベントの時からドラマーとしてペイジと行動を共にしていたジェイソン・ボーナムの賢明なプレイぶりも伝わってきます。「ボンゾの息子」としてある種のステイタスを確立してしまった今と違い、そのはつらつとしたドラミングが際立っている。
そして「OUTRIDER」に収録された「Emerald Eyes」のコンパクトにまとまったロックナンバーとしての魅力、さらにオリジナルのファーム以上に躍動感たっぷりに演奏された「Tear Down The Walls」など、驚くほど弾きまくるペイジとマイルズの見事な化学反応が最高の音質で記録されています。是非とも今回のリリースで忘れ去られた「OUTRIDER」ツアーの魅力を再認識してください。そしてショーのすべてを聴きたくなった方には当店リリースのロンドン公演（極上オーディエンス録音）を収録した「PRISON BLUES」をおすすめします。

これが“OUTRIDER TOUR 1988”の概要。本編プレスCDは「米国#2」の７-８公演目（全体の16-17公演目）でしたが、本作はその１ヶ月前となる「米国#1」の７公演目にあたるコンサートでした。このショウはMTVで放送もされたために古くからの大定番ですが、本作はそのベスト・マスターを収録しています。大元自体は同じなので従来からあるカットインやカットアウト（Tear Down The Walls、White Summer、In My Time of Dying、Train Kept A Rollin’）、部分収録（Someone To Love、Prison Blues、Liquid Mercury、Wanna Make Love、Wasting My Time）、音声のみの曲（Liquid Mercury、Wasting My Time）等は同じものの、クオリティはビデオ時代の既発を遙かに凌ぐ。極上のサウンドはもちろん、白線ノイズやダビング劣化もほとんどなく、発色も当時そのまま。もちろん、時代柄アナログ撮影ではあるものの、バツグンのマスター鮮度で現在の眼でも十二分に美しい映像美です。そのクオリティで、本編プレスCDでも聴けない各人のソロや「City Sirens」「The Chase」「Dazed And Confused」「Wanna Make Love」等々がタップリと見られるのです。
さらに時代の薫り漂うのが冒頭に配された特別映像。ジミーへのインタビューをはじめ、当日のイベント風景やサウンドチェックも本編ライヴと同様の映像美で描かれる。当時44歳でまだ若々しく、再始動を期したペイジ。その彼が笑いながら語り、くわえ煙草に真剣な眼差しでギターの鳴りを確かめる姿……。まさに80年代最高の光景なのです。
