When asked, “What do you like most about Jimi Hendrix’s live performances?”, Most rock fans would say “Woodstock.” A stage that concludes the end of the biggest rock festival of the 1960s, accompanied by a group that is neither an experience nor a band of gypsy’s. And above all, it is a legendary stage that has been forever remembered by people due to the historical masterpiece of the “American National Anthem” used in the festival’s films. The power of the movie is truly immense, and it’s no wonder that Jimi’s performance there was seen as a symbol of Woodstock. Gypsy Sun and Rainbows, who backed Jimi on that day, said that after the dissolution of his experience, a newly formed band but unexpectedly short-lived band also appeared at the festival, and many people It will remain in my memory.
It has been a long time since the official release of such a historic stage was realized in both the sound source and the video, but the latter is still not an item that can be called the definitive edition. Although the number of songs in the two-disc set released just 20 years ago has increased, the two songs sung by Larry Lee are not recorded, and even the part where he played the solo is cut, and after all, two The sound of the human percussionist was almost muted.
Originally, Gypsy Sun and Rainbows was the only big band organization group in Jimi’s band history, organized by a large number of people unlike the three-piece experience. However, all of Jimi’s Woodstock items that have been released so far have been mixed out with sidemen’s performances modestly, and among them, “Fire” etc., it seems like an experience … A state that seems to end up.
Isn’t a new version released in 2009, 40 years after the festival was held? It was expected, but it ended up with only a recurrence that remastered the 1999 version.

However, this year is the 50th anniversary of Woodstock, and in such a commemorative year, the release of an archive set consisting of a 38-disc set was announced. Befitting this super-dreadnought volume, the whole picture of the stage of artists such as Joe Cocker, The Who and CSN & Y has been revealed for the first time. When that happened, Jimi’s stage was finally … The 38-disc track list that everyone expected had a song that was clearly diverted from the 1999 version. It was reported that only Jimi’s sound source used the release from their side. The enthusiasts all over the world are disappointed by the disappointing result that the opportunity ends with the diversion of the existing version.
However, in the underground world, there has been a rough mix sound source that almost completely recorded Jimi’s stage. It was created by Eddie Kramer after the festival, and is believed to have been created as a reference for Jimi. This rough mix leaked in the 1980s and spread on the LP “LORD OF THE STRINGS”. For the first time, the whole picture of Jimi’s stage at Woodstock became clear, and it became known that Larry Lee was the lead vocalist for the two songs. However, only the new song “Message To Love (Universe)” that decorated this sound source and the opening was cut, which caused the misunderstanding that the first song started with “Hear My Train A Comin” for a while. It has become.
It was a compilation CD called “500.000 HALOS” released 20 years ago that corrected the long-standing misunderstanding. Not only was “Message To Love” unearthed for the first time, but it was also revealed that the performance was at the opening from tuning before the performance. This was a leak of the rough mix (which wasn’t used after all) made by Alan Douglas, who controlled his sound source after Jimi’s death, when the 1994 Woodstock CD was released.

Jimi’s Woodstock has revealed the truth of the stage by such rough mixes, but especially the full length version rough mix by Kramer is distributed in the form of considerable dubbing, and the pitch deviation and hiss noise are said to be jarring. I had a problem. Even so, it was released on CD because of the preciousness of the sound source, but since all the items were recorded with such problems neglected, it was not out of the range for enthusiasts.
Finally, in the 21st century, a low-generation version of Kramer Rough Mix was distributed among traders, and in response to that, Jimi’s sound source circle “ATM” released in 2007 “WOOD STOCK –NOTHING BUT PRIMARY RHYTHM THINGS … “. Although not as official as it should be, the upper version, which is still incomparably easier to hear than the previous version, greatly pleased Jimi’s enthusiasts. However, not only that, regarding the problem of not recording “Message To Love” which is the biggest drawback of Kramer sound source, instead of diverting from the 1999 version official, we adopted the Douglas rough mix excavated in the previous “500.000 HALOS”. As a result, the discomfort in sound quality was kept to a minimum.
On top of that, the result of “NOTHING BUT ~”, which was compiled by carefully patching the missing parts from the 1999 version, is excellent, and it is evaluated as a masterpiece that supplements the official in both the mix side and the content side. It was even described as “the best title of ATM” in specialized magazines.
Originally, the ATM series was made on the premise of sharing on the Internet, and “NOTHING BUT ~” was easily available for at least several years from 2007. However, since most of the performances at Woodstock were released in the 1999 version, they got caught up in the so-called “official content” on the net, and recently it has become a hard-to-find net item. It was. However, this time, Jimi researcher provided the original file, and based on “NOTHING BUT ~”, only the minimum equalization was applied. The title was so complete.

After all, the rough mix is overwhelmingly the original sound of Gypsy Sun and Rainbows is transmitted. For example, during the performance of “Red House”, the first string of Jimi’s Strat was cut, and the scene where Lee played the solo of the place connection was skillfully cut in both the sound source and the video in the official. When I heard this release, I wondered if I would be indignant that he cut the most important part. It’s easy to see that Lee’s “Mastermind” was played here as well as giving him time to change Jimi’s strings. The singing voice he hears on the song and the Impressions cover “Gypsy Woman” is exquisite. It’s really interesting to see Lee singing a regular R & B in front of a large crowd of Woodstock while Jimi is playing the latest rock sound.
The fact that Larry sang two songs at Woodstock is a well-known fact even if you are not a maniac, but now that the possibility of official release has become a blister, you will be reminded of the preciousness heard here again. .. The studio take of “Mastermind” itself cleared up and I saw the light of day in the “WEST COAST SEATTLE BOY” box, but the live version at the regular big event is still heard only on this sound source!
Also, in the latter half of “Spanish Castle Magic”, the scene where the percussion corps played an active part from the rally solo was all changed officially, but this was the original performance. Even in that official, “Lover Man” featured many scenes where Lee played solo, but on the actual stage it was also a live that was unique to the big band composition that Jimi and Lee shared solo in most songs. A realistic scene that is transmitted because it is a sound source.
And all the members except Mitch Mitchell were concerned about the situation that the big stage was their first experience, and Jimi’s play, in which he gave instructions to the band while playing solo to the fullest, is still a masterpiece of the first generation. Above all, there are many enthusiasts who feel that the analog-like sound quality is more suitable for Jimi than the 1999 version and its current remaster, which have a strong digital feel.
Finally, as a bonus track, “Message To Love” is recorded with only one existing Woodstock audience recording. It is a sound source that was known only among traders, but this is the first time it has been recorded in an item, and it seems that overwhelmingly many people will hear it for the first time in the first place. Before the performance started, Taper’s own comment was heard and he just testified that he “recorded from the stage sleeves”, so you should pay attention to the precious sound source where Jimi’s guitar sound is big. Fifty years after Woodstock, this release is a stereo soundboard album that can be called a true document! Dedicated to all rock fans, not to mention Jimi Mania.

★ As soon as it was released two years ago, the long-awaited second press board of Jimi Hendrix’s highest peak title, which sold out 500 copies at once due to its wonderful contents, arrived.

LP「LORD OF THE STRINGS」で広まりました。
