In his later years Jimi Hendrix has produced many prestigious performances under the name Cry of Love Tour. Not only that, but the great sound source is also a big feature of Jimi’s later years live. As a proof of that, we released the best Odins album “NEW YORK POP FESTIVAL 1970 COMPLETE AUDIENCE RECORDING” last year. There are other blessings, some of which have been officially released. In other words, there are many stages that were officially recorded using a multi-track recorder. The Berkeley show on May 30th was one such day, and both of the two stages were recorded on a multi-track premise of release.
Regarding the second show, the official “LIVE AT BERKELEY” was released over 15 years ago, but the first show has been sold out for a long time. This time is very famous for having performed “Johnny B. Goode”. It was widely known that the song was recorded on the famous live compilation “IN THE WEST”, but the movie “JIMI PLAYS BERKELEY” released after that was also a mixture of two shows. After all, the release of the entire first show has not been realized yet.
However, in the mania and collectors’ direction, the first show was a flower-shaped sound source, and the old label, Woopy Cat’s “THE BERKELEY CONCERTS”, revealed the whole picture of the first show for the first time. I wonder if the impact of the outflowing multi-track sound source was also great by putting a circle on it. “PROTEST SONGS FROM BERKELEY!” Released by Dandelion after that was also called the new definitive edition.
Of course, they were antiques, and now each has its own problems. Both of them were based on the Gene copy cassette copy first, of course, there was a pitch problem with the Woopy board, and the Dandelion board had the label-specific equalization. In addition, shortly after its release, the official release of the second show was realized, and it is now true that its value has been halved.
Due to that, Berkeley’s leaked multi-sound source itself will not be talked about among enthusiasts, and it will fall into a terrible situation where the classic performance that was a classic was overlooked at one time. In the 2010s, such a situation was resolved at once. In the first place, it was a sound source owned by one core trader that spread the original version of Woopy and Dandelion. A sound source left by a person named Bob Terry. In other words, the low-generation version of his possession spread all at once with the sound source that was the source of the item I touched on earlier. It was a situation similar to the one when Mike Millard’s master was excavated just this year.
Included in that was Berkeley’s First Show. As expected, the sound quality is the best because it is a large version of the original version. Jimi iron wall trader network “ATM” restores it. Originally it was a rough mix of sound sources recorded on multitrack, but the sound quality is finally official because it is a low-gene version. This is a multi-track sound source.
Not that, Jimi was on the first stage of the day, but the engine was fully opened from the opening “Fire”. Not only the guitar, but also plenty of songs. From there, you linked to the hyper performance of “Johnny B. Goode”. In the movie I touched on earlier, Jimi’s appearance of defeating this song with a violent action was captured, but it is reminded that he was in great shape even with these two early songs.
“Ezy Rider” is a masterpiece among the new songs that were inspiring Jimi at the time. When Jimi missed the sound and played it, Billy Cox matched it, and as a result, it transposed in the middle of the performance. When I returned to the song with Mitch Mitchell’s drum solo in between, the original tone returned, but the guitar tuning went wrong this time. It is Jimi’s place that I ran through without trouble.
In the finale’s “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)”, the mistuning further drew Jimi’s legs, and these happenings may be the reason why the official full version is not released. However, it’s wonderful because it shows off these problems.
Anyway, since it is a sound source that can not be complained, only the adjustment of the fine adjustment level is added at the time of this release. The famous performance “Johnny B. Goode”, which is representative of this episode, is now officially released in the CD version “IN THE WEST” and “JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE” box. While these were mixes that carefully distributed the trio performances below Jimi, there is not such an extreme sense of separation here. Rather, a rough mix with a natural stereo feeling is definitely preferable.
And unlike those that have been remastered or remixed with digital technology, the far more natural and warm sound quality is also attractive. Above all, the ample presence of Billy’s bass is unmatched in listening to the current fragmented official release mix. Rather, the charm of raw, analog-like sounds is fully open. Still, the performance and sound quality are definitely superb. In this case, not only Jimihen mania but also all rock fans, I would like to push my chest and recommend it to the best multitrack soundboard album!

晩年のジミ・ヘンドリックスはクライ・オブ・ラブ・ツアーと言う名の下で多くの名演を生み出してきました。それだけではなく、音源が非常に恵まれているのもジミ晩年ライブの大きな特徴。それを証明するがごとく昨年リリースしてみせたのが極上オーディンス・アルバム「NEW YORK POP FESTIVAL 1970 COMPLETE AUDIENCE RECORDING」でした。他にも音源が恵まれており、そのいくつかはオフィシャルでリリースまでされている。つまりマルチトラック・レコーダーを使って正規に収録されたステージも多く存在しているということ。5月30日に行われたバークレー公演もそんな一日であり、二回行われたステージはどちらもリリースを前提としてマルチトラックにて収録されました。
セカンド・ショーに関しては15年以上前にオフィシャルの「LIVE AT BERKELEY」がリリースされていますが、ファースト・ショーに関しては昔から切り売りされてばかりな状態。こちらの回は「Johnny B. Goode」が演奏されたことで非常に有名。同曲が名ライブ編集盤「IN THE WEST」に収録されたことで広く知れ渡ったのですが、その後公開された映画「JIMI PLAYS BERKELEY」も二回のショーの混成でした。結局ファースト・ショー全体のリリースは未だに実現せず。
しかしマニアやコレクターズ方面においてファースト・ショーは花形音源となっていて、懐かしのレーベル、ウーピーキャットの「THE BERKELEY CONCERTS」がファースト・ショーの全貌を初めて解き明かしてくれました。それに輪をかけて流出マルチトラック音源というインパクトも大きかったかと。その後ダンデライオンによってリリースされた「PROTEST SONGS FROM BERKELEY!」も新たな決定版と呼ばれたもの。
もちろんそれらは骨董品であり、今となってはそれぞれに問題を抱えていました。どちらもまずジェネ落ちカセット・コピーを元にしていたというのはもちろん、ウーピー盤はピッチの問題があり、ダンデライオン盤はレーベル特有のイコライズが施されてしまっていた。おまけにそれのリリースから間もなくしてセカンド・ショーのオフィシャル・リリースが実現してしまい、今となっては価値が半減してしまったというのも事実。
そのせいでバークレーの流出マルチ音源自体がマニアの間で話題に上ることもなく、一時は定番中の定番だった名演が見過ごされてしまうという由々しき事態へと陥ってしまいます。そんな状況が一気に解消されたのが2010年代。そもそもウーピーやダンデライオンの元になったバージョンを広めるきっかけとなったのは、一人のコア・トレーダーが所有していた音源でした。ボブ・テリーという名の人物が遺した音源。つまり先に触れたアイテムの元になった音源で彼の所有していたロウジェネレーション・バージョンが一気に広まったのです。それはちょうど今年に入ってマイク・ミラードのマスターが発掘されたのと似た状況でもありました。
その中に含まれていたのが今回のバークレー、ファースト・ショー。さすがに大本のロウジェネ・バージョンということもあって、音質は最高。それをジミ鉄壁のトレーダー・ネットワークである「ATM」がレストア。元々マルチトラックで録音された音源のラフミックスだったのですが、それのロウジェネ・バージョンということで音質はいよいよオフィシャル級。これこそがマルチトラック音源というものでしょう。
それだではありません、ジミはこの日最初のステージだったというのに、オープニングの「Fire」からしてエンジン全開。ギターだけでなく歌いっぷりも余裕に溢れている。そこから「Johnny B. Goode」のハイパーな演奏に結び付いたのですね。先に触れた映画では激しいアクションと共にこの曲を弾き倒すジミの姿が捉えられていましたが、これら序盤二曲だけでも彼が絶好調であったのだと思い知らされます。
当時のジミを奮い立たせていた新曲群の中では「Ezy Rider」が傑作。ジミが途中で音を外して弾いてしまうと、何とビリー・コックスがそれに合わせてしまい、結果として演奏の途中で転調するというスリリングな展開に。そこからミッチ・ミッチェルのドラム・ソロを挟んで曲に戻ると元の調には戻ったものの、今度はギターのチューニングが狂ってしまう。こうしたトラブルをものともせずに駆け抜けたのがこの日のジミらしいところ。
フィナーレの「Voodoo Child (Slight Return)」になるとさらにチューニングの狂いがジミの足をひっぱっており、これらのハプニングこそオフィシャルで完全版がリリースされない原因なのでしょう。ところが、こうしたトラブルをねじ伏せてみせるのだからお見事。
とにかく文句のつけようがない音源ですので、今回のリリースに当たっても微調整レベルのアジャストしか加えていません。この回を代表する名演「Johnny B. Goode」ですが、現在CD版「IN THE WEST」や「JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE」ボックスなどでオフィシャルにリリースされています。それらがジミ以下トリオの演奏を丹念に振り分けたミックスとなっていたのに対し、こちらではそこまで極端な分離感はない。むしろラフミックス自然なステレオ感が俄然好ましい。
そしてデジタルのテクノロジーにてリマスターやリミックスが施されたそれらと違い、はるかにナチュラルでウォーミーな音質も魅力的。中でもビリーのベースのふくよかな存在感は現在の断片的なオフィシャル・リリースのミックスとは比べ物にならない聞き心地の良さ。むしろ生のままのアナログライクな音の魅力が全開なのです。それでいて間違いなく演奏も音質も極上。こうなるとジミヘン・マニアだけでなく全ロックファンに胸を張って推したい極めつけのマルチトラック・サウンドボード・アルバム！
