Mike Millard’s master excavation series, in which a super-famous board of the class that was called “one in ten years” appeared every month a while ago. Introducing the latest and amazing live album that is rumored to be “Mirrored highest sound quality”.
“January 14, 1977 Pasadena performance” is included in this work. It is a transcendental audience recording recorded in “SONGS FROM THE WOOD TOUR” of the heavyweight JETHRO TULL. When I came to “Mirrored / JETHRO TULL / 1977”, “LOS ANGELES 1977: Mike Millard 1st Gen (Uxbridge 1063)”, which was excavated last year and gained great popularity, is also a new place in my memory. In order to explain the situation in that area, let’s first look back on the schedule at that time and confirm the position of the show.

This is JETHRO TULL in 1977. Speaking of the representative sound source of this tour, there is also a Land Bar performance officially announced in the deluxe edition of “SONGS FROM THE WOOD”, but the Pasadena performance of this work is quite different. Far from before the album was released, it was the first day of the world tour. On the other hand, it was quite close to “LOS ANGELES 1977”, and it was a concert just two days ago.
This work recorded at such a show is a superb brand that is out of the ordinary. The “common sense” in this case is not the so-called “common sense of audience recording”. It goes beyond the charismatic “common sense of mirrored recording” in the history of recording. From here, we will proceed on the premise of those who have experienced mirrored recording. This work also has the individuality and beauty of Millard’s work, but what is special is dynamism. For example, “LOS ANGELES 1977” had a crystal-clear atmosphere and a strange dimension of neatness, but it was also a little flat in the whole ensemble. No, it was three-dimensional enough, but its three-dimensional feeling is called “dent”, but it should also be called “note standout due to the depth of the silent part”. On the other hand, this work has a “convex three-dimensional effect” in each note.
Is it a 3D movie if this is visually compared? Contrary to the old-fashioned catch phrase of “Jumping XX”, 3D movies produce a three-dimensional effect with depth, but the three-dimensional effect in the real world really pops out. In other words, while the three-dimensional effect of “LOS ANGELES 1977” is deep, this work feels like a three-dimensional object as it is in the natural world. Moreover, the three-dimensional effect resides in each note, creating a sense of construction in the entire ensemble. In addition to the usual ultra-high sound quality, it is a sound of a different dimension that conveys the “presence” that JETHRO TULL is there.
Although the sound alone made me dizzy, the show itself was actually too special. As mentioned earlier, this tour is based on a formal Land Bar performance, so let’s compare the sets.

… And it looks like this. Three songs that cannot be heard on the official live album are shown, but this is an extremely rare repertoire in the entire history of JETHRO TULL. It is a song that was played because it was the first day when trial and error of the set had just begun, and it is a valuable song that can not be heard even in “LOS ANGELES 1977” two days after the tour. And the performance that plays the rare set is also fresh. It’s not the best performance on the tour, but it’s a different dimension from the carefully rehearsed band of about 100, and yet the tension that inspired the beginning of the tour life is high.
The first day set with plenty of valuable songs and the sound of the topic, “the highest level in the mirrored collection”. It is a live album that transcends “LOS ANGELES 1977”, which was very popular as a masterpiece at every point. Unfortunately, the opening scene was not recorded, and it was only in the middle of “Skating Away On The Think Ice Of A New Day” (probably the opening “Wonderin’Aloud” is completely missing). For that reason, it was introduced from the Uxbridge label, but the quality is just a miracle. 少し前なら「十年に１本」と呼ばれていたクラスの超名盤が毎月登場しているマイク・ミラードのマスター発掘シリーズ。その最新弾にして「ミラード最高音質」と噂される驚異のライヴアルバムが登場です。
そんな本作に収められているのは「1977年１月14日パサデナ公演」。重鎮JETHRO TULLの“SONGS FROM THE WOOD TOUR”で記録された超絶級オーディエンス録音です。「ミラード／JETHRO TULL／1977年」と来たら、昨年発掘されて大好評を博した『LOS ANGELES 1977：Mike Millard 1st Gen（Uxbridge 1063）』も記憶に新しいところ。その辺の状況をご説明するためにも、まずは当時のスケジュールから振り返り、ショウのポジションを確かめておきましょう。

これが1977年のJETHRO TULL。このツアーの代表音源と言えば、『SONGS FROM THE WOOD』のデラックス・エディションで公式化されたランドバー公演もありますが、本作のパサデナ公演はだいぶ時期が違う。アルバム発売前どころか、ワールド・ツアーの初日。その一方で『LOS ANGELES 1977』とはかなり近く、わずか２日前のコンサートでもありました。
そんなショウで録音された本作は、常識外となる超極上の銘品。この場合の「常識」とは、いわゆる「オーディエンス録音の常識」ではありません。録音史のカリスマたる「ミラード録音の常識」をも超えているのです。ここからはミラード録音を体験済みの方を前提に話を進めさせていただきます。本作もまたミラード作品の個性と美点が息づいているわけですが、特別なのはダイナミズム。例えば『LOS ANGELES 1977』はクリスタル・クリアな空気感と異様な次元の端正さを併せ持っていましたが、アンサンブル全体で言うとやや平坦でもありました。いや、十分に立体的ではあったのですが、その三次元感覚は「凹み」と言いますが、「無音部の深みによるノート際立ち」とでも言うべきものでした。それに対して、本作は１音１音に「凸の立体感」が宿っている。
これを視覚的に喩えるなら３Ｄ映画でしょうか。古臭い「飛び出す○○」のキャッチコピーに反して３Ｄ映画は奥行きで立体感を演出するわけですが、現実世界の立体感は本当に飛び出してもいる。つまり『LOS ANGELES 1977』の立体感が奥行きなのに対し、本作は自然界そのままの立体物のように感じられるのです。しかも、その立体感は１音１音に宿り、アンサンブル全体にも構築感を醸している。いつもの超高音質に加え、JETHRO TULLがそこに居るという“存在感”まで伝えてくれる異次元のサウンドなのです。
もう、そのサウンドだけでも目眩がするのですが、実はショウ自体もスペシャルすぎる。前述のように、このツアーは公式化されたランドバー公演が基準になりますので、セットを比較してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。公式ライヴアルバムでは聴けない３曲が披露されているわけですが、これはJETHRO TULL全史でも激レアなレパートリー。まだセットの試行錯誤が始まったばかりの初日だからこそ演奏された曲であり、ツアー後期どころかたった２日後の『LOS ANGELES 1977』でさえ聴けない貴重曲なのです。そして、そのレア・セットを演じる演奏もフレッシュ。さすがにツアー最高の超名演とは行きませんが、入念にリハーサルされた凡百のバンドとは次元が違い、それでいてツアー生活の幕開けに発奮したテンションも高いのです。
「ミラード・コレクションでも最高レベル」と話題のサウンドと、貴重曲たっぷりの初日セット。あらゆるポイントで傑作と大評判だった『LOS ANGELES 1977』を超越するライヴアルバムです。惜しむらくは開演シーンが録音されず、「Skating Away On The Think Ice Of A New Day」の途中からとなってしまった事のみ（恐らくオープニングであったろう「Wonderin’ Aloud」が丸々抜けています）。そのためにUxbridgeレーベルからのご紹介となってしまいましたが、クオリティはまさに奇跡そのもの。十二分に永久保存級……いえ、そんじょそこらのプレス・タイトルでは太刀打ちできない次元の超名盤です。このミラクルな大元マスターの新発掘、どうぞ本作で存分にご体験ください。
