Jeff Beck became the third Japan in 1978 Japan Live tour album is a revival release with a gift. In 1973 BB & A, in poor physical condition in 1975 three performances each, but in 1978 the number of times increased at once, it was a tour around the archipelago with all 10 performances. This work was recorded in the audience album which contained six performance talks “November 28 Fukuoka / Nippon Steel Otani gymnasium performance” that is just in the middle.
Participation by masterful Stanley Clarke also became a topic in 1978, but in fact it was a different member from the original schedule. At first, in addition to Jeff, Stanley, Simon Phillips and Mike Gerson were lineups, but Jeff did not like the performance of Mike and replaced with Tony Himus. I rehearse lasting three days and came to Japan. As a result, the beginning of the Japan tour was not very good, so I went up every time I followed the schedule. It is said that the ensemble of the band solidified and it got better and better than Nagoya on the 5th day, and this is the Fukuoka performance around this work.
This work which included Jeff’s first Fukuoka and a memorable co-star with Stanley came on, which was normally released from the Masterport label. As you can imagine from that background, it is a really wonderful audience recording, even on this day it is a quality that competes for 1 or 2. Although there is no close contact feeling that can be said as “sound board”, the clearness of the musical sound is excellent, it is a beautiful recording of a direct feeling of a direct ball which penetrates straight through the space of Nippon Steel Otani gymnasium.
Co-starred with such sounds is splendidness that Tamebo can escape. Especially on this day, not only the ensemble has settled down, it is also known as a live entertaining mania with many small listening attractions. The set list is the same as Nagoya the day before, but beautiful harmonics rings in the intro of “Cat Moves”, improvisation arranged in the intro of “Journey To Love” is also fresh. In “Lopsy Lu” Stanley and Jeff listen to Jimihen’s “Third Stone From The Sun” phrase and “Rock ‘n’ Roll Jelly” can also enjoy unusual drum introduction and Jeff’s slide phrase. Of course, “Freeway Jam” “School Days” which the four gears engaged is also the best.

Although it is a wonderful sound, it can not be said that it is the top point in the entire tour, there are some sound cuts in the drum solo. Because of such a drawback, it is a recording that can not be completed before pressing, but it is too regrettable to bury it in the darkness of history. ジェフ・ベックにとって３度目の日本となった1978年ジャパン・ツアーのライヴアルバムがギフトで復活リリースです。1973年のBB&A、体調不良だった1975年は３公演ずつでしたが、1978年は回数も一挙に増え、全10公演で列島を巡るツアーとなりました。本作が録音されたのは、その中でもちょうど真ん中となる６公演目「11月28日福岡・新日鉄大谷体育館公演」を収めたオーディエンス・アルバムです。
名手スタンリー・クラークの参加も話題となった1978年ですが、実は当初の予定とは違うメンバーでの来日でした。最初はジェフ、スタンリーに加え、サイモン・フィリップス、マイク・ガーソンというラインナップでしたが、ジェフがマイクの演奏を気に入らず、トニー・ハイマスに交代。直前に３日間だけリハーサルをしての来日となったのです。そのため、ジャパンツアーの序盤はあまり本調子とは言えず、日程を追うごとに調子を上げていった。バンドのアンサンブルが固まり、グッと良くなったのが５日目の名古屋、そして本作の福岡公演辺りと言われているのです。
ジェフにとって初めての福岡、そして記念すべきスタンリーとの共演が噛み合ってきたライヴを収めた本作は、以前Masterportレーベルから通常リリースされていたもの。その経緯からも想像できる通り、実に素晴らしい客席録音で、この日でも１・２を競うクオリティなのです。“まるでサウンドボード”と言えるほどの密着感はありませんが、楽音のクリアさは絶品で、新日鉄大谷体育館の空間を真っ直ぐに突き抜ける直球のダイレクト感が美しい録音です。
そんなサウンドで彩られた共演は、タメ息の漏れる素晴らしさ。特にこの日は、アンサンブルが固まってきただけでなく、細かい聞き所の多い、マニア受けするライヴとして知られている。セットリストこそ前日の名古屋と同じですが、「Cat Moves」のイントロでは美しいハーモニクスが鳴り、「Journey To Love」のイントロに配された即興も新鮮。「Lopsy Lu」でスタンリーとジェフがジミヘンの「Third Stone From The Sun」のフレーズを聴かせ、「Rock ‘n’ Roll Jelly」でも珍しいドラムイントロとジェフのスライド・フレーズが楽しめる。もちろん、４人の歯車が噛み合った「Freeway Jam」「School Days」も最高です。

素晴らしいサウンドではあっても、ツアー全体では頂点とは言えず、ドラムソロに若干の音切れもある。そうした欠点のためにプレス化までは踏み切れない録音ではありますが、だからと言って歴史の闇に葬ってしまうのはあまりに惜しい。それほどまでに、本作に封じられたフレーズの数々は眩しいのです。スタンリーとの輝く共演を存分に楽しみたい方、いつもいつまでもジェフを愛しておられる諸兄に贈るライヴアルバム。ぜひ、この美しい記録をあなたのコレクションに加えてください。
