OIL ON CANVAS”, which captured the last stage of JAPAN and became their only live album. The video pro shot is a gift release decision.
Included in this work is “November 1982 London”. This is the official video work “OIL ON CANVAS” that includes a live performance of the famous traditional venue “Hammersmith Odeon”. Although it is a video version with the same title as the live album, the recorded live is also the same. There will also be a decision board for the tour to Japan that was the final destination this week, so let’s look back on the situation at that time from the schedule at that time.

This is Japan after the release of “TIN DRUM”. This work is the final version of their last home country tour “UK # 2”. Hammersmith Odeon had six consecutive performances “November 17-22” and was compiled from there. This video was released on VHS in 1983, the same as the album, but was soon discontinued. It was made into a DVD as part of “THE VERY BEST OF” in 2006, but it is now difficult to obtain. Despite being a valuable work that can witness “moving JAPAN”, it is a masterpiece that is too unfortunate. Even now, poor DVDs caused by VHS are flooding, but this work is the highest quality version that is different from them.
The beauty of the video is exquisite. As it is widely known, it is hard to say that the image quality that is hazy is accurately capturing the on-site stage, but this is an intentional production. It was originally created by applying video effects. And master freshness that faithfully reproduces the illusion is overwhelming. The color is exactly the same as it was at that time, with no dubbing deterioration and no tape run or white line noise. The sound of the stereo sound board is also beautiful, and it is a video beauty that is completely different from many VHS occurrences.
It is exactly “OIL ON CANVAS to see with your eyes” that is drawn with that quality. It’s a little different from the album, so let’s organize it here.

JAPAN末期のステージを捉え、彼ら唯一のライヴアルバムとなった『OIL ON CANVAS』。その映像編プロショットがギフト・リリース決定です。
そんな本作に収められているのは「1982年11月ロンドン」。伝統の名会場“ハマースミス・オデオン”のライヴを収録したオフィシャル映像作品『OIL ON CANVAS』です。ライヴアルバムと同タイトルの映像編なわけですが、収録されたライヴも同じ。今週は最終地となった来日公演の決定盤も登場しますので、まずは当時のスケジュールから当時の状況を振り返ってみましょう。

これが『TIN DRUM』リリース以降のJAPAN。本作は、彼ら最後の母国ツアー「英国#2」の最終盤。ハマースミス・オデオンでは“11月17日-22日”の６連続公演であり、そこから編纂されたのです。この映像はアルバム編と同じ1983年にVHSでリリースされたものの、ほどなく廃盤。2006年には『THE VERY BEST OF』の一部としてDVD化されましたが、それも現在では入手困難となっている。“動くJAPAN”を目撃できる貴重作にも関わらず、あまりにも不遇な名作なのです。現在でもVHS起こしの粗悪なDVDが氾濫しておりますが、本作はそれらとは異なる最高峰クオリティ版です。
その映像美は絶品。広く知られるように靄がかかったような画質は現場ステージを正確に捉えているとは言い難いのですが、これは意図的な演出。オリジナルの時点でわざわざ映像エフェクトをかけて製作されたものです。そして、その幻想感を忠実に再現するマスター鮮度こそが圧倒的。発色はまさに当時そのもので、ダビング劣化はもちろんテープの走行ヨレや白線ノイズもない。ステレオ・サウンドボードの音声も美美麗で、数々のVHS起こしとはまったくちがう映像美なのです。
そのクオリティで描かれるのは、まさに「目で観るOIL ON CANVAS」。アルバム編ともちょっと異なるので、ここで整理してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。アルバム編に収録されていた「Quiet Life」「Nightporter」がカットされていますが、その代わり開演パートの「Burning Bridges」を収録。曲順も実際のショウに準じたものになっている。全体のボリューム感はアルバム編に及ばないものの、ショウの再現感覚は本作の方が上なのです。
そして、それ以上なのが動くメンバーの姿。セクシーな歌声を吐き出すデヴィッド・シルヴィアンの表情ドアップもたっぷりならスティーヴ・ジャンセンのスティックさばきもクールな表情でProphet-5を奏でるリチャード・バルビエリもマルチカメラでばっちり。そして、何と言っても必見なのがミック・カーン。フレットレス・ベースを自在に操る指使いもさることながら、伝説的なあの「カニ横歩き」もプロショットで目撃できるのです。
絶頂期のJAPANを捉えた映像作品でありながら、歴史の影に隠れている不遇の名作『OIL ON CANVAS』。本作は、その最高峰版をいつでも楽しめるDVDです。名作ライヴアルバムの映像編というだけでなく、最後の日本公演の記憶も甦らせてくれる１枚。どうぞ、この機会にじっくりとご堪能ください。
