当時LPにさえならなかった、世界初公開のキニー録音が登場です！　本作は、伝説のIRON MAIDEN初来日ツアーから「1981年５月24日・中野サンプラザ公演（夕方の部）」を収めたオーディエンス・アルバムです。同時リリースの「TOKYO 1981 1ST NIGHT（ZODIAC 159）」と同じく、こちらもオリジナルの録音カセットを発掘し、ダイレクトに復刻いたしました。
そのサウンドは、奇跡的なハイクオリティとリアリティを両立した「TOKYO 1981 1ST NIGHT」とまったく同等・同系統。ただのオーディエンス録音ではないスーパーサウンドでありながら、ただの超・高音質では味わえない観客の熱狂を真空パックしています。しかも、オリジナル・カセットですから鮮度は、この地球上で最高。LP化もされなかったということは、下手をするとデジタル化した際の再生が録音してから最初だったかも知れない……そんな風に思えてしまうほどの鮮烈サウンドです。「Murders In The Rue Morgue」の冒頭に極々わずかなテープチェンジの欠けがありますが、当日の99.9…％が超美麗サウンドで体験・体感できる2枚組なのです。
そんなサウンドで封じ込められ、スピーカーから流れ出る大気は、ジャパンツアーの４公演目である中野サンプラザの現場でたゆたっていたもの……と言葉で言うのはカンタンですが、この初来日公演にはオフィシャルEP「MAIDEN JAPAN」や某公共放送局のFM放送をはじめ、無数のオーディエンス録音がある。その上、この「５月24日」は１日２公演。混乱されないよう、ここで一度ジャパンツアーの日程を確認してみましょう。

このように、初のジャパンツアーは４日間５公演。この日はFM放送と同じ「５月24日」ではありますが、ライヴは別の夕方の部なのです。
そんな４回目のライヴは、初日の東京厚生年金会館を収めた「TOKYO 1981 1ST NIGHT」と酷似していながら、微妙に違う表情を見せてくれる。例えばディアノが「Hey！」と声をかけると一糸乱れぬ「Hey！」が返ってくるわけですが、初日はディアノが何の期待もしていないところへ猛烈な反応が返ってきていた。それに対し、本作のディアノは“さぁ、あのかけ声を返してくれ”と言わんばかりの心象が滲む。もちろん、たった４回のライヴでフレッシュな感覚が抜けるわけがありませんが、そこには“どうなるか分からないがやってやる！”のギリギリ感とは違う、“今日も最高にしてやろうぜ”の自信が透ける。バンドと観客がハーフ＆ハーフで初体験にしかない緊張と喜びと興奮を魅せた初日「TOKYO 1981 1ST NIGHT」に比べ、本作はバンドが主導して、観客を狂わせているのです。その後、２日目の大阪、３日目の名古屋と異なる土地を回り、すべてで熱狂と歓待を受け、再び東京に戻ってきた自信がなせる業なのでしょう。さらには、オフィシャル録音も上手くいき、最終の「夜の部」とは違って放送も入っていない（わずかな）リラックス感も滲み、この日、この回にしかない空気が漂っているのです。
セットリストも「TOKYO 1981 1ST NIGHT」とは異なっています。序盤に「Purgatory」「Sanctuary」を畳みかけ、終盤にしっとりとした「Strange World」を入れてきた。初日の序盤は「Wrathchild」、アップな「Sanctuary」、軽快な「Twilight Zone」、叙情的な「Remember Tomorrow」と、さまざまな面をアラカルトに見せ、異国の客には何がウケるのか試すかような流れ（まぁ、全部ウケたわけですが）でしたが、本作は臆せず突っ走るときは徹底的に走り、聴かせるパートでは存分に聴かせる。その結果、完成したオーダーを見直してみると、前半に「KILLERS」、後半は「鋼鉄の処女」を主軸とする、かなりメリハリの強い流れになっているのです。

「TOKYO 1981 1ST NIGHT」に続き、誰も聴いたことのないキニー録音の超傑作が誕生しました。この兄弟作とLangleyレーベルのFM盤「LIVE KILLERS（廃盤）」で、東京３公演の頂上コレクションは完成します。初期IRON MAIDENの録音群の中でも、比類なきテンションと名演が詰まったライヴアルバム。ぜひ、たっぷりとお楽しみください！
