ブルースを迎えた新生IRON MAIDENは、ブルースとのコンビネーションを完璧なものにすべく、5日間のイタリア・ツアーをブッキングしました。本作は、そのイタリア・ツアー最終日「1981年10月30日ミラノ公演」を収めたオーディエンス・アルバムで、ツアー最高音質&最長録音の1本なのです。このイタリア・ツアーは“KILLER WORLD TOUR 1981”の一環であり、当然セットリストも「鋼鉄の処女」「キラーズ」というディアノ時代のレパートリーだけ。それをSAMSON時代そのままのブルースが野獣モードで吠えまくるライヴだったのです。このイタリア・ツアーは全5公演。ここで、その日程を確認してみましょう。

この5日間は、いずれも優れた客席録音が残っていますが、本作のミラノ公演は古くから有名で、一部でサウンドボードとしても取引されていた録音。「BREAKING IN BRUCE」「THE NUMBER OF THE KILLERS(日付はクレジットミス)」「INNOCENT EXILE」「INCOMING」「DEFINITIVE YEARS IV」等々、幾多の既発を生み、愛されてきた定番でもある。本作は、その大決定盤なのです! 近年になって発掘されたロウ・ジェネレーションのアナログテープからダイレクトにデジタル化されたもので、鮮度も長さも格段にアップグレード! 既発にはテープスピードを遅くしたり、水増しして2枚組にしているタイトルもありましたが、本作はライヴ本編だけでも84分超の最長版。「The Ides of March」から「I’ve Got The Fire」まで、ショウの総てを完全録音しています。もちろん、長さだけでなく、サウンドも過去最高。冒頭の「The Ides of March」こそ、やや音の丸みも感じますが、生演奏が始まるやサウンドボードと間違われるのも無理はない強力なダイレクト感とクリアさが一気に広がる。既発からして素晴らしいサウンドでしたが、そこにロウジェネならではの鮮度と瑞々しさまで加わった。このイタリアツアー5公演は、異常とも言えるほどのハイクオリティ録音がそろっているのですが、その中でもズバ抜けて素晴らしい! ブルースだけでなく、ポール時代を含めても80年代初期屈指の高音質なのです(先日、キニーのオリジナルカセットから起こされた日本公演「TOKYO 1981 1ST NIGHT(ZODIAC 159)」「TOKYO 1981 AFTERNOON SHOW(ZODIAC 161)」が発掘されたため、軽々に「ツアーNo.1」とは断言できなくなってしまいましたが……)。特に後半は客席録音だと分かって聴いていても、サウンドボードに思えてくる。シンバルの鳴り1つとってもダイレクトで鋭く、しかも、その響きがまったく歪まない。輝く金属光沢のようなサウンドなのです。
そんなサウンドで描かれるのが、ブルース加入から5回目のショウ。まだ「魔力の刻印」の曲は書かれておらず、全編「鋼鉄の処女」&「キラーズ」のブルース・バージョンで塗り固められている。特に「Purgatory」「Twilight Zone」「Innocent Exile」の3曲は“BEAST ON THE ROAD 1982”以降には演奏されず、ブルース・バージョンは超・貴重。特に「Purgatory」は、ブルースが歌う(現在のところ)最後のパフォーマンスです。しかも、単に貴重なだけでなく、ショウ全体の世界観が素晴らしい。演奏はポール時代そのままにファストでアグレッシヴ。関係者から“パンクメタルだった”と言われたIRON MAIDENに、野獣モードのブルースが叫ぶ、叫ぶ! 叫ぶ!! そのパッションは客だけでなくバンドメンバーにも向けられており、「こいつらに俺の力を証明してやる」と言わんばかりの絶唱。超大作をドラマティックに歌い上げることもブルースの魅力ではありますが、ここでは徹底的に攻めのシャウトで突き抜ける。「IN ROCK」時代のイアン・ギランもかくやの大迫力です。
もちろん、ブルースに煽られっぱなしにはならないバンド側の熱演も究極的なら、イタリア人の熱狂ももの凄い。ダイレクトな楽音を遮ることはないのですが、曲間になろうものなら、猛烈な声援が津波となって押し寄せてくる。現場となった“パラリード”は、5,000人クラスの中規模会場なのですが、その盛り上がりはMONSTERS OF ROCKかROCK IN RIOかといった様相。特にアンコール待ちのシーンは、「放送局がオーバーな口笛をダビングしすぎた?」と思うほど。もちろん、客席録音ですからオーバーダブなどあるはずもなく、それが本生100%の熱狂。既発では大幅にカットされていたシーンですが、まさかこれほどの熱狂が巻き起こっていたとは……。IRON MAIDENの、いえ、本生ライヴ音源数あれど、ここまで超クリアな楽音&超熱狂が同居している録音など聴いたことがありません………いやホント、もの凄い。まさに、Killer Gig!
ライヴ本編だけで長くなってしまいました。本作には、さらにブルースのオーディション・テープ「Twilight Zone」「Wrathchild」「Killers」の3曲をボーナス収録しました。もちろん、ブルースにとってIRON MAIDEN初録音。これまた古くから有名な録音ではありますが、こちらも幾多の既発を問題外にする過去最高クオリティです。

ブルースを迎え、世界の扉を大きくこじ開けることになるIRON MAIDEN。本作は、生まれかわりの刹那を捉えた大傑作です。身体に染みこんだNWOBHMの薫りを猛烈に発散させつつ、その限界をアグレッションで食い破らんとするヘヴィメンタル・モンスター。たしかにブルース・バージョンの「Purgatory」「Twilight Zone」「Innocent Exile」こそが目玉ではありますが、そんなこともすっかり忘れるほど超絶ライヴです。激レア曲があり、歴史の転換点であり、猛烈な熱演と観客………その総てが過去最高峰のサウンドで聴けるライヴアルバム。IRON MAIDEN全史でも2つとない絶対特別な超強力盤。全身全霊の喜びをもってご紹介します!
