Introducing the finest live album containing “Ultimate Night”. The “night of class greed” is “November 22, 2017: Bunkamura Orchard Hall performance”. The performance of HUEY LEWIS & THE NEWS, which ended with great popularity the other day, is coming to Japan.
All the performances in Tokyo this time were at “Orchard Hall” for 3 consecutive days. First of all, let’s confirm the position of the show on the schedule.

Initially, two performances were planned in Tokyo, but due to their popularity, additional performances have been decided. And this wasn’t just an addition. The other three performances, including Osaka, were based on the latest tour, but this day is a special concept. Titled “ALL THE HITS”, it was a one-night show where only the big hits that swept the US charts were played. The set list was announced in advance, but it was a gorgeous and dazzling one. All 17 songs are single songs, and the top 10 hits are lined up in a row, including “The Power Of Love,” “Jacob’s Ladder,” and “Stuck With You,” which are number one in the United States, and most of them are in the top 20 or higher. “Back In Time” and “Work in’For A Livin'” aren’t that high, but they’re still 20th and 3rd on the US mainstream charts (although the announced “It’s Alright” is actually It wasn’t played, and instead “Little Bitty Pretty One” was shown. This song also recorded the 27th smash hit on the adult contemporary charts).
There are a number of bands that make up the Greatest Hits set, but I’ve never seen such a gorgeous and thorough set. It is a hit parade that is possible because of HUEY LEWIS & THE NEWS. Moreover, this is the world’s first attempt. It was an idea that Huey Lewis and the manager came up with after discussing “I wonder if something special can be done” in response to the decision of this additional performance.
The sound of this work, which recorded such a special “ultimate night”, is also special. Although it is an original master that was directly handed over from the recorder himself, this person is a master who has made many famous recordings in Tohoku (the microphone used is Schoeps MK4). It was recorded by going to Tokyo for a show that was too special. That’s why it’s different from other audience recordings. Although the audience’s enthusiasm for the hit song is also absorbed, the performance and singing voice that arrives straight are clear to the line recording. The balance is great, and when the audience’s clapping disappears, I just forget that it’s an audience recording.
While it was such a beautiful sound, I was happy because it also had the feeling of being “on the spot”. Not only is the audience’s clapping and cheering realistic, but the sound of the performance itself has the feeling that “Huey Lewis is right there and singing live.” With such a sound, the whole body is wrapped in super great test hits. It’s the finest live album, both as a musical piece and as a tool for re-experience.

Anyway, it is a masterpiece with a delicious sound and a delicious set. The visit to Japan four years ago, which was the 30th anniversary of “SPORTS”, was also special, but this work is just a one-night show in the world. Originally, I would like you to officially record and release it, and it is no wonder that it will be executed in the future, judging from the excitement of this day. However, even if such luxury is not realized, there is this work. It’s a live album that is so beautiful and has a wonderful “experience” feeling.
Standing at the scene of the “ultimate night”, this one was full of luxury soaked in the essence of a masterpiece. Please enjoy it to your heart’s content.

“究極の夜”を収めた極上ライヴアルバムが登場です。その“級欲の夜”とは、「2017年11月22日：Bunkamuraオーチャードホール公演」。つい先日、大評判のうちに終了したHUEY LEWIS & THE NEWSの来日公演です。
今回の東京公演はすべて“オーチャードホール”で、３日連続。まずは、日程でショウのポジションを確認しておきましょう。

当初、東京は２公演の予定でしたが好評のために追加公演が決定。しかも、これがただの追加ではなかった。大阪も含め、他３公演は最新ツアーに準じる内容でしたが、この日だけは特別コンセプト。“ALL THE HITS”と題され、全米チャートを席巻した大ヒット曲だけ、大ヒット全部を演奏する一夜限りのショウだったのです。事前にセットリストも告知されていましたが、それだけで目眩がする豪華絢爛ぶり。17曲すべてがシングル曲であり、全米ナンバー１の「The Power Of Love」「Jacob’s Ladder」「Stuck With You」を筆頭にトップ10ヒットがズラリと並び、ほとんどがトップ20以上。「Back In Time」や「Workin’ For A Livin’」はそこまでの順位ではありませんが、それにしてもUSメインストリーム・チャートで20位と３位（ただし、告知されていた「It’s Alright」は実際には演奏されず、代わりに「Little Bitty Pretty One」が披露されました。この曲にしてもアダルト・コンテンポラリー・チャートで27位のスマッシュヒットを記録しています）。
グレイテスト・ヒッツなセットを組むバンドは数あれど、ここまで豪華でここまで徹底的なセットは見たことがない。まさしくHUEY LEWIS & THE NEWSだからこそ可能なヒットパレードです。しかも、これが全世界初の試み。今回の追加公演決定を受け、ヒューイ・ルイスとマネージャーが「何か特別なことができないかな」と話し合って思いついたアイディアだったのです。
そんな特別すぎる“究極の夜”を記録した本作は、サウンドも特別。録音家本人から直接譲り受けたオリジナル・マスターなのですが、この方は東北で名録音の数々をモノにしてきた名手(使用マイクはSchoeps MK4）。特別すぎるショウのために東京まで出向いて記録されたのです。それだけにそんじょそこらのオーディエンス録音とはわけが違う。ヒット曲に沸く観客の熱狂も吸い込んでいるものの、真っ直ぐに届く演奏と歌声は、ライン録音ばりにクリア。バランスも素晴らしく、観客の手拍子が消えると、ついついオーディエンス録音だと忘れてしまう。
それだけの美音でありながら、“その場にいる”感も両立しているから嬉しい。単に観客の手拍子や喝采がリアルなだけでなく、演奏の音そのものに“ヒューイ・ルイスがすぐそこにいて、生声で歌っている”感が宿っている。そんなサウンドで超グレイテスト・ヒッツに全身が包まれる。音楽作品としても、追体験のツールとしても最高級のライヴアルバムなのです。

とにかく美味しいサウンド、美味しいセットを極めた大傑作です。『SPORTS』30周年だった４年前の来日も特別でしたが、本作はまさに世界で一夜だけのショウ。本来であればオフィシャル収録してリリースして欲しいですし、この日の盛り上がりから察するに今後実行しても不思議はありません。しかし、そんな贅沢が実現しなかったとしても、本作がある。それほどまでに美しく、“体験してる”感も素晴らしいライヴアルバムなのです。
“究極の夜”の現場に佇み、名曲の粋に全身で浸れる贅を尽くした１本。どうぞ、思う存分お楽しみください。
