The legendary first visit to Japan that ended unfinished due to a major accident just before completion. Introducing a marvelous new excavation master who can experience the accident site with superb sound and a coupling album of the symbolic sound board.
HEART’s first visit to Japan was realized in 1979 after the release of “DOG & BUTTERFLY”. It was a participation in the huge festival “JAPAN JAM ’79”. Two of them are engraved in this work. This live album contains the sound board recording of the “August 4, 1979: Enoshima” performance in the first half of one disc, and the first appearance audience recording of the “August 7, Fushimi Momoyama Castle Castle Land” performance in the second half. Speaking of their first visit to Japan, the three-disc press masterpiece “JAPAN JAM ’79 (Shades 473)” reigns as the decisive board, but there is no cover with this work. The 3-disc set “JAPAN JAM ’79” was a full audience recording of 2 performances in Enoshima, but this work is also an FM sound board on the first day part (first half), and the audience part (second half) is Fushimi Momoyama Castle performance in Kyoto. [First half: The highest peak version of the super famous FM sound board in history (6 songs, about 40 minutes)] The first to appear is a super famous FM broadcast that has symbolized the first visit to Japan. The master who has reigned as the best for many years has been brushed up again, and the “Mistral Wind” intro, which had cut marks in the conventional version, is also beautiful, and there is no high drop in the second half. The content of the 40-minute broadcast cannot be changed, but it is also the pinnacle record for the first visit to Japan in terms of sound quality.
The live performance drawn with such a sound is wonderful, but the interview with Ann Wilson / Roger Fisher is also full of time. Speaking of “JAPAN JAM ’79”, you may remember the huge wall of the RAMSA speaker that was also the sponsor (by eye, about 2 two-story apartments x 2), but Roger climbs there. He also talks about performance. The rich 1979 scent blows out around the announcer’s elegant narrative and rock content.

[Second half: The best master of new excavation that recorded the moment of the big accident (5 songs, about 26 minutes)] The highest peak FM sound board in history is only the undercard / front swing for this work. The key to this work is the live recording of the “August 7: Fushimi Momoyama Castle Castle Land” performance that was recorded in the second half. Yes, it is a recording of a new excavation audience that was interrupted due to a major accident. It is the first appearance master that was discovered recently, but its quality is also excellent. There is no reverberation only in the outdoor venue without a roof or ceiling that reflects sound, and the thick and thick core that is not affected by the song is approaching. There are some scenes that are so powerful that they tend to overpeak, but that is a super direct sound that is comparable to the 3-disc set “JAPAN JAM ’79”.
And the show drawn with that sound is … the scene of a major accident that has only been rumored so far. It started with “Cook With Fire” as smoothly as the Enoshima performance, but something went wrong with the second song “High Time”. It suddenly becomes cloudy in the sky, and heavy rain falls from the sky. Of course, this work is an audience recording without video, but you can hear a popping noise between songs. At first, the sound seems to be “applause?”, But for that reason, there is no swelling cheers, and it continues to sound expressionlessly at regular intervals. Moreover, it gets stronger and stronger. In the following “Heartless”, you can feel the sound of rain during the performance, and you can clearly see that it is raining quite hard at the end of the song. After that, the show continued to progress, and the rain intensified. After “Nada One”, Ann Wilson sang “Dancin’in the rain ♪” with a bitter smile. It is after the end of “Straight On” that such a rain pattern exceeds the limit. Ann’s “Thank you!” Was hit by thunder as well as rain, and an accident occurred when Anne’s call started the drum intro of the next song “Even It Up”.
The site is a special outdoor stage, and the steel frame is also exposed. It seems that a blue sheet was put on it to make an instant roof, but rainwater accumulated more and more and collapsed. The steel frame snapped and fell on the drum riser, and the seat wrapped around the stage. A catastrophe that happened to be a broken steel frame that avoided Michael DeRoger, but it wouldn’t be strange if there were a few more dead people. In the audience seats, thunder and screams are mixed, and voices such as “Drums on top!” Of course, the show couldn’t be continued in such a situation, and the event itself was canceled on the spot. In this work, you can experience such a shocking moment clearly / clearly with the best sound.

HEARTの初来日が実現したのは、『DOG & BUTTERFLY』リリース後の1979年。巨大フェス“JAPAN JAM ’79”への参加でした。本作に刻まれているのは、そのうちの２公演。ディスク１枚の前半に「1979年８月４日：江ノ島」公演のサウンドボード録音、後半に「８月７日：伏見桃山城キャッスルランド」公演の初登場オーディエンス録音を収録したライヴアルバムです。彼女たちの初来日と言えば、３枚組のプレス名盤『JAPAN JAM ’79（Shades 473）』が決定盤として君臨しておりますが、本作との被りは一切ありません。その辺の状況を把握するためにも、初来日のスケジュールから振り返ってみましょう。

以上、全３公演。３枚組『JAPAN JAM ’79』は江ノ島２公演のフル・オーディエンス録音でしたが、本作は初日パート（前半）もFMサウンドボードですし、オーディエンス・パート（後半）は京都の伏見桃山城公演なのです。それでは、２つの記録をそれぞれ個別にご紹介していきましょう。

【前半：超有名FMサウンドボードの史上最高峰版（６曲・約40分）】
まず登場するのは、初来日を象徴してきた超有名FM放送。その最高峰更新マスターです。これまでも数々の既発群を生み出してきたサウンドボード録音ですが、本作には最高峰版で永久保存。長年ベストとして君臨してきたマスターを改めてブラッシュ・アップしており、従来版ではカット痕のあった「Mistral Wind」イントロも美しく、後半のハイ落ちもない。約40分の放送内容は変えようがありませんが、サウンド・クオリティに関しては初来日の頂点記録でもあるのです。
そんなサウンドで描かれるライヴも素晴らしいですが、さらにアン・ウィルソン／ロジャー・フィッシャーへのインタビューも時代感満点。“JAPAN JAM ’79”と言えば、スポンサーでもあったRAMSAスピーカーの巨大な壁（目測ですが２階建てアパート×２棟くらい）をご記憶の方もいらっしゃるかと思いますが、そこにロジャーがよじ登るパフォーマンスについても語っている。アナウンサーの上品な語り口でロックな内容を話す辺りにも濃厚な1979年の薫りが吹き出すのです。

【後半：大事故の瞬間を記録した新発掘の極上マスター（５曲・約26分）】
そんな史上最高峰のFMサウンドボードも、本作にとっては前座／前振りでしかない。肝心要にして本作の命となるのは、後半に収められた「８月７日：伏見桃山城キャッスルランド」公演のライヴ録音。そう、大事故が起きて中断してしまった新発掘オーディエンス録音です。最近になって発掘された初登場マスターなのですが、そのクオリティも絶品。音を反射する屋根や天井のない野外会場だけに反響ゼロで、曲罹患のない骨太＆肉厚な芯がグイグイと迫ってくる。あまりにもパワフルなためにオーバーピーク気味になるシーンもなくはないのですが、それこそ３枚組『JAPAN JAM ’79』にも匹敵する超ダイレクト・サウンドなのです。
そして、そのサウンドで描かれるショウは……これまで噂でしか伝わってこなかった大事故の現場。江ノ島公演と同じように快調に「Cook With Fire」でスタートするのですが、２曲目「High Time」で早くも異変が発生。一天にわかにかき曇り、空から大粒の雨が降ってくるのです。もちろん、本作は映像ナシのオーディエンス録音ではあるのですが、曲間になるとポツポツとしたノイズが聞こえる。最初は「拍手かな？」とも思える音なのですが、その割りには盛り上がった喝采がなく、無表情に一定間隔で鳴り続ける。しかも、それがどんどん強くなる。続く「Heartless」では演奏中にも雨音が感じられるようになり、曲が終わるとかなり激しく降っているのがよく分かるのです。その後もショウは進みつつ、雨も激化。「Nada One」が終わるとアン・ウィルソンも苦笑いしながら「Dancin’ in the rain♪」歌っています。そんな雨模様が限界を超えるのが「Straight On」の終了後。アンの「ありがとう！」に雨音どころか雷鳴までもが被り、アンのコールで次曲「Even It Up」のドラム・イントロが始まったところで事故が起きた。
現場は野外の特設ステージであり、鉄骨も丸出し。そこにブルーシートをかけて即席の屋根にしていたそうですが、雨水がどんどん溜まって崩壊。鉄骨がグニャッと折れてドラムライザーに倒れかかり、シートがステージを包み込んでしまったのです。たまたま折れた鉄骨がマイケル・デロージャーを避けたカタチになったものの、もう少しで死人が出てもおかしくない大惨事。客席は雷鳴と悲鳴が混じり合い、「ドラムスの上やねん！」等の声が飛び交う。もちろん、そんな状況でショウが続けられるはずもなく、イベント自体がその場で中止となってしまいました。本作は、そんな衝撃の瞬間を極上サウンドでハッキリ／くっきりと体験できてしまうのです。

伝説の初来日を象徴してきたサウンドボードの最高峰版と、事故現場を極上体験できる超ドキュメント録音。どちらも時間は短いものの、超ド級な衝撃の記録をカップリングした１枚です。３枚組『JAPAN JAM ’79（Shades 473）』と併せれば初来日をコンプリートできるわけですが、それ以上に本作自体が日本洋楽史の大事件盤。どうぞ、永久保存プレスCDで存分にご体験ください。
