これが“BAD ANIMALS TOUR 1987-1988”の概要。当時の記録にあやふやなところがあるので公演数は厳密ではありませんが、おおよその流れはご理解いただけると思います。全米No.1を叩き出した『HEART』からいわゆる“ゴージャス時代”は始まっていたわけですが、そのツアーは北米と日本のみ。1988年になって初めて生まれ変わったHEARTがヨーロッパへと進出。本作のロンドン公演は、その「欧州」レッグ11公演目。“ウェンブリー・アリーナ”４連続の初日でもありました。
そんなショウを収めた本作は、実に素晴らしいスペクタクル・オーディエンス。実のところ、この英国ツアーは名匠“Crazy S.”氏の名作プレスCD『LEAP NIGHT（Shades 440）』でもご紹介したことがありますが、本作はその姉妹作。やはり“Crazy S.”氏のオリジナル・カセットから精緻にCD化した極上品なのです。実際、本作のサウンドは“Crazy S.”の名声を一層輝かせる素晴らしさ。『LEAP NIGHT』はホールクラスだったのに対し、本作は巨大アリーナになるわけですが、クリアさはまったくの互角。距離感ゼロというわけではないものの、ほんのりまとった会場音響も透明に透き通っており、ディテールを隠すことも曇らせることもない。ただ鳴りを豊かに彩りつつ、透き通った空間を瑞々しい演奏と歌声が真っ直ぐに届く。巨大会場オーディエンスでは弱点になりがちな重低音も美しく、ヴァイヴの波１つ１つが波形で目に浮かびそうなほどきめ細やかなのです。
まったくもって“80年代オーディエンス”の常識外なクオリティではありますが、客録の旨みもしっかりとある。まず、広大なスペクタクル感。ホールクラスのクリアさではあるものの、立体感もたっぷりにどこまでも広がる観客の海は、やはり“ウェンブリー・アリーナ”。実は（極わずかながら）間近席の声を拾ってもいるのですが、それと遙か彼方の遠方席との遠近感が凄い。そこから沸き上がる喝采・唱和はまさに波打つ絨毯。素晴らしくもゴージャスなHEARTのショウに、ビロードの艶やかさまで加えてくれる。しかも、その観客は生まれ変わったHEARTを持ちに待っていた英国人だちであり、場所はハイライト公演の“ウェンブリー・アリーナ”。いつも以上に大成功ムードが満点なのです。
そして、演奏音のスペクタクル。この時代のHEARTは単に派手なわけではなく、その煌びやかでありながら同時にダイナミック。力強いビートも、全盛ロバート・プラントばりの歌声も、繊細にして鋭いギターも、すべてが巨大なドラマを描いている。本作は、その演奏や歌声が巨大会場の隅々まで支配し、観客たちを飲み込んでいくのがよく分かる。何と言いますか、まるで１万2000人を丸ごと飲み込む超巨大スピーカーの中にいるよう。この独特な没入感・小宇宙感は、サウンドボードやオフィシャル盤では決して味わえない。超クリアなオーディエンス録音だけがくれる醍醐味なのです。
