This is the whole picture of “APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION TOUR” that has traversed the world. MONSTERS OF ROCK appeared on 22 performances in the middle of “North America # 4”. This leg supported AEROSMITH, but went to Britain at one point to perform at the biggest festival in the UK.

[Legendary transcendence recording with sound alone] か ら There have been recordings of this show since then, but all of them had severe sound quality. What changed the situation was “Don’t Fuckin ‘Kill Each Other”, which was recorded by master Crazy S. and released on the Langley label in 2002. Maniacs from all over the world shook for too clear sound & uncut recording. “Super taper” Crazy.S “is here!” Was released to the world, and it was one of the commemorative cards that started the march. In fact, even if you listen to Crazy.S’s current ears who know a lot of recordings, the sound of this work is amazing. IRON MAIDEN was the symbol of that day. Crazy.S also recorded the stage of IRON MAIDEN, but in the press decision board “MONSTERS OF ROCK 1988: 25th Anniversary Edition (Zodiac 033/034)” using that sound source, it was used in combination with the sound board sound source . “It doesn’t feel strange when mixed with SBD!” I would like to say that GUNS will be on the same day as that MAIDEN recording, but that wasn’t exactly the case. Even the best sound board version of MAIDEN was even better.
Although it is such a legendary recording, this work has been further polished with careful digital remastering. The original sound was always of high quality throughout, but the sound nuance was changing rapidly only in the outdoor venue. However, in this work, the excess point from the low range to the mid range is adjusted, and the separation feeling of each instrument is improved. For example, if you listen to “It’s So Easy”, you will notice that the prominent treble has become natural and very easy to hear.

[Site document of a fatal accident that is too terrible] While it is a legendary sound, what makes this work “special special” is the live itself. Even though the PV of “Paradise City” has a big audience like Donington, which is like a pulsating sea, this is exactly the site of this work. The first song “It’s So Easy” begins with a strange atmosphere from the opening. Yes, this one song is exactly the moment when two people were intimidated. An unusual climax means that no one has noticed that a dead person was playing during the performance, and he rushed to the second song. However, the band also felt that “This is awful …”, or could not move on to the next song. Axel Rose and slash call on the audience to calm down, and there are a lot of MCs that are close to being nervous, such as “Hey, go down, go down!”, “Come down!” It sounds clear (I’m glad Crazy.S was safe …).

The MONSTERS OF ROCK, which had died, was canceled for the first time in 1989 the following year, and GUNS N ‘ROSES returned to the sacred place of Donington 18 years later, in 2006. GUNS N ‘ROSES continues to produce many anecdotes after this, but the 46 minutes enclosed in this work is a super-class major incident. It was one of the tragedies that nobody wanted, vacuum-packed with the clearest and most realistic super-sounds.

たとえGUNS N’ ROSESの録音が何百・何千と溢れていようとも、“特別中の特別”となったら本作しかあり得ない。そんな永遠の大名盤がリニューアル・ジャケットの2ndプレスCDで復刻です。
その大名盤が記録されたのは「1988年８月20日ドニントン」。そう、２名の死者を出した悲劇の“MONSTERS OF ROCK 1988”の全貌を捉えた極上オーディエンス録音です。GUNS N’ ROSESが聖地ドニントンの舞台に立ったのは、時代の寵児として全世界を席巻していたころ。音楽業界をひっくり返す衝撃のデビューを飾ったとはいえ、まだキャリアの浅い彼らは２番手の出演。しかし、そこで名門“MONSTERS OF ROCK”の歴史さえも変える死亡事故が起きてしまったのです。ここで、当時のスケジュールからショウのポジションを振り返ってみましょう。

これが世界を蹂躙した“APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION TOUR”の全体像。MONSTERS OF ROCKに出演したのは「北米#4」のド真ん中となる22公演目。このレッグはAEROSMITHのサポートを務めていたのですが、イギリス最大のフェスに出演するためにワンポイントで渡英したのです。

【サウンドだけでも伝説的な超絶録音】
当時からこのショウの録音はありましたが、どれも音質の厳しいものばかりでした。その状況を一変させたのが名手“Crazy S.”氏が録音し、2002年にLangleyレーベルからリリースされた『”Don’t Fuckin’ Kill Each Other”』でした。あまりにクリアなサウンド＆ノーカット収録に、世界中のマニアが震撼。「スーパー・テーパー“Crazy.S”ここにあり！」を世界に轟かせ、その快進撃の始まりとなった記念すべき１枚でもありました。実際、Crazy.S氏の録音を大量に知っている現在の耳で聴いても、本作のサウンドは驚異的。それを象徴するのがこの日のトリだったIRON MAIDEN。Crazy.S氏はIRON MAIDENのステージも録音していたのですが、その音源を活用したプレス決定盤『MONSTERS OF ROCK 1988: 25th Anniversary Edition（Zodiac 033/034）』ではサウンドボード音源と混合で使用。「SBDと混ざっても違和感がない！」と賞賛を集めたのです。そんなMAIDEN録音と同じ日だけにGUNSも……と言いたいところですが、実はそれどころではなかった。極上サウンドボード並のMAIDEN編さえも上回っていたのです。
そんな伝説録音ではあるのですが、本作はさらに細心デジタル・リマスターを施して磨き込んだもの。原音は、終始一貫して高音質ではあったのですが、野外会場だけにそのサウンド・ニュアンスが目まぐるしく変化していました。しかし、本作では低域から中域にかけての過剰なポイントを調整し、各楽器の分離感を向上しているのです。例えば「It’s So Easy」を聴いていただければ、突出していた高音がナチュラルになり、非常に聴きやすくなっているのに気づいていただけるでしょう。

【凄絶すぎる死亡事故の現場ドキュメント】
まさに伝説のサウンドでありつつ、本作を“特別中の特別”にしているのは、やはりライヴそのもの。「Paradise City」のPVでも脈打つ海原のようなドニントンの大観衆が観られますが、まさにあれこそが本作の現場。オープニングから異様な雰囲気が漂うなか、１曲目の「It’s So Easy」が始まる。そう、この１曲こそ、まさに２名が圧死した瞬間なのです。異様な盛り上がりとは、まさか演奏中に死者が出たことなど気づくはずもなく、２曲目に突入。しかし、ここでバンドも「こりゃ、ヤバいよ……」と感じたのか、次の曲に移れなくなってしまう。アクセル・ローズもスラッシュも観客に落ち着くよう呼びかけ、「おい、下がれ、下がれ！」「落ち着けって！」「殺しあうんじゃない！」「出ていけよ！」などなど、鬼気迫るMCの数々がウルトラ・クリアに聞こえるのです（本当にCrazy.S氏が無事でよかった……）。
そんなMCを所々に挟みながらも、演奏は実に素晴らしい。危険を感じながらも、世界を席巻しているGUNS N’ ROSESの凄味が抑えようとしても溢れてくるのです。もし突然ステージを降りようものならそれこそ暴動になるのでしょうが、だからと言ってこんなライヴを聴かせながら「落ち着け」と言われても無理かもしれない……。そんな観客を静めるため、この日は急遽セットリストを組み替えたと言われており、本来ならアップに畳み掛けるであろう終盤でもスローな「Patience」「Sweet Child O’ Mine」を持ってきています。まるで鎮魂歌のように聴こえる「Sweet Child O’ Mine」のラストには、皮肉とも自棄ともつかない「Great fuckin’ day!!」の言葉を残し、本作は幕を閉じます。

死者を出してしまった“MONSTERS OF ROCK”は、翌1989年には史上初の中止となり、GUNS N’ ROSESが再び聖地ドニントンに立つのは、18年後の2006年でした。この後も数々の逸話を生んでいくGUNS N’ ROSESですが、その中でも本作に封入された46分間は超ド級の大事件。誰もが望まなかった悲劇、その一部始終をこれ以上ないほどクリアでリアルなスーパー・サウンドで真空パックした１枚なのです。
幾多のアーティストの無数のライヴ記録を扱って参りましたが、これほどハイクオリティで、ここまでセンセーショナルなタイトルはありませんでした。まさにロック文化史の世界遺産にして、究極のドキュメント・アルバムです。ロックが世界の中心だった時代の語り部が廃盤などという事があってはならない。永久保存プレスCDでここに復刻です。

In the intro, the state of the day flows along with the logo of the band that appeared in “MONSTERS OF ROCK 1988”. I am surprised at the lineup. IRON MAIDEN, KISS, DAVID LEE ROTH, MEGADETH, GUNS N ‘ROSES, HELLOWEEN … (It may not be strange that audiences are so strange that they are so luxurious.) However, it is difficult to imagine the scene only by listening to the sound. As you can imagine, the sight behind your mind will be different from the facts of history. However, this work is full of the sight that one of the spectators of the day actually saw. After carving this video in mind, listen to the press CD. That’s the only way to get the closest to the facts.

本編プレスCDは超極上のライヴアルバムであると同時に、ロック史上最大級のドキュメント・アルバムでもあります。もちろん、クオリティも重みもオマケなど必要としない究極の１枚ではあるのですが、その中身が“事件現場”となると話は違う。そう、本作はその事件現場を目撃できる映像編なのです。
というわけで、本作に収められているのは本編プレスCDと同じ「1988年８月20日ドニントン」。そのオーディエンス・ショットです。本編プレスCDの解説でも触れた通り、この日の様子は「Paradise City」のPVでもモノクロ映像でわずかに観ることができますが、本作は悲劇の起きた客席側のカラー記録なのです。
そんな本作は、本編のオーディエンス映像の前にアクセル・インタビューをフィーチュアしたテレビ番組からスタート。イントロでは“MONSTERS OF ROCK 1988”に出演したバンドのロゴとともに、当日の様子が流れる。そのラインナップに改めて驚く。IRON MAIDEN、KISS、DAVID LEE ROTH、MEGADETH、GUNS N’ ROSES、HELLOWEEN……（これほど豪華では観客がおかしくなるのも不思議じゃないかも知れません）。そして、その大観衆がDJの煽りに乗って一斉に「We Will Rock You」を叫ぶ光景が大スペクタクルで映し出される。その後の悲劇を知っている現代の眼には、空恐ろしくなるほどのド迫力です。
そして「Sweet Child O’ Mine」のPVとインタビューの後は、いよいよ現場のオーディエンス映像。かなり前方で撮影したらしく、メンバーの様子もくっきり。とても80年代の秘蔵物とは思えない美しい画質で、まるで昨日撮影したような鮮度です。残念ながら収録は「Paradise City」「Welcome To The Jungle」「Sweet Child O’ Mine」の３曲で（たとえ不謹慎の誹りを被ろうとも、悲劇の起きた「It’s So Easy」を観たかった）、ところどころワープも散見するのですが、これほどのクオリティで最前列付近の空気を臨場感たっぷりに感じさせてくれるだけでも凄い。時たま揺れるアングルですら、まるでその場に居合わせているかのようなリアリティなのです。

本編プレスCDは、凄まじいクリアサウンドで悲劇のライヴの一部始終を収めた歴史的ドキュメント・アルバムです。しかし、音だけ聴いて現場を思い浮かべようとしても難しい。想像できたところで、脳裏の光景は歴史の事実とは違っていることでしょう。しかし本作には、あの日の観客のひとりが現実に目にした光景そのものが詰まっている。この映像を心に刻んでから、プレスCDを聴く。それこそが事実にもっとも近づける、たったひとつの方法なのです。
