このようにUKツアーは全５公演で、本作は２公演目です。そんな本作を記録したのは、かの“Crazy S.”氏。80年代に数々のハードロック／ヘヴィメタル・バンドを記録してきた世界的な名匠が“革命”真っ最中のGUNS N’ ROSESを逃すはずがない。英国ツアーを聞きつけて、早速現場に赴いたわけですが、彼が“ロックシティ”を選んだのにも理由がある。実は、この５日間は、イギリス各地のホールを巡るツアーだったわけですが、その中で唯一、スタンディングのクラブが“ロックシティ”だった。「新進気鋭」の言葉すら生ぬるい猛烈な勢いでのし上がってきた米国バンド。後々のモンスターぶりはおろか、まさかクラブ録音自体が貴重になるとは想像もしなかったと思いますが、その真の実力を本場のクラブで見極めてやろうと考えたわけです。
そして、そんな“ロックシティ”の一夜は、ロックの若き怪物をクラブに押し込めた濃密なライヴアルバム。この録音自体は『ROCK CITY 1987』『DESTRUCTION 87』といったタイトルで愛されてきましたが、今回は、現場の空気を直接吸ったオリジナル・カセットの現物を提供いただき、無類の名録音の究極形を実現したのです。実際、本作を再生すると、既発にはなかった開演前の熱気も収録。開演前にMOTLEY CRUEの「Wild Side」が流れていたことまで、しっかりと分かるのです。その「Wild Side」が消えた瞬間に吹き出す熱気の凄まじさ！　まだ観ぬ未来の大物を待ち受ける英国ロック野郎どもの息づかいまでもが超リアルにスピーカーから吐き出されるのです。
そして始まる「It’s So Easy」。既発をご存じの方なら覚えていらっしゃるでしょうが、ここでオーバーピークの音割れが発生してしまいます。名匠に似つかわしくないノイズに弘法の筆の誤りかと思いきや、すぐさま修復するから凄い。２・３曲続けてならいざ知らず、１曲目の１発目の出音だけでビシッと修正し、その後は“Crazy S.”ブランドの名に恥じぬ……いえ、彼のコレクションでも上物のサウンドがたっぷり味わえる。名匠が現場で録音サウンドを確認していたのかは分かりませんが、もし聴きながらであれば、現場の大ボリュームの中で録音中の音を聞き取るわけですし、そうでなかったとしたらPA音だけでサウンドを判断している。いずれにしても、名匠ならではの即決ぶりも鮮やかな録音なのです。
そして、そのサウンドで描かれる“若き怪物どものクラブ・ギグ”こそが熱い。一夜にして世界を塗り替えた『APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION』ですが、それは決して偶然でもフェイクでもなかった。名盤の名曲をアルバム以上に熱く叩きつける猛烈なロック。当時はハードロックどころか、ハードコアやスラッシュメタルさえ登場していた時代、特に奇抜でも斬新でもないシンプルなロックが、ここまで新鮮でワイルドに響くとは……。極太のバンド・サウンドもさることながら、それを叩きつけられて我を忘れるブリティッシュ・キッズの熱狂までもがビビッドに感じられる。スタッフのミスか、冒頭ヴォーカルにぶ厚いエコーがかかっていますが、そんなディテールや歌詞の一単語さえも鮮烈に聴き取れる名録音なのです。
そんなリアリズムがことさら鮮烈なのが、終演シーン。「Paradise City」のラストで何事かが起きたらしく、アクセルが突如として激怒。「fuck！」「suck！」と言い残してステージを降りてしまう。アンコールを求める熱狂渦巻く中、WASPの「Wild Child」が流れてショウが終わってしまうのです。もし、現場にいたら無念なところですが、30年後に録音で聞くと、その後に無数の武勇伝を残すことになる若きアクセルの面目躍如。猛烈なドキュメント感でむせ返るようです。
