GENESIS and Phil Collins, who had been sweeping the music world of the 1980’s with a couple with Hugh · Pajam. Such a Japanese program at that time is a gift release decision.
There are two programs included in this work. Main is the special number “MAMA TOUR SPEICAL 1984” with the theme of the album “GENESIS”. 【Main: MAMA TOUR SPEICAL 1984】
First of all, it is GENESIS special number which was broadcasted in the Kansai area. While songs were playing, members’ comments were inserted between intervals. First of all, interesting is the image of each song. That’s all “That’s All” “Turn It On Again” is the familiar PV, but the others are live scenes. “Abacab” is a studio live thinking overseas television program, but more interesting is six songs after “Keep It Dark”. It is a live scene that tells the state of “MAMA TOUR”, but it seems to be a diversion from the official image “LIVE – THE MAMA TOUR” when looking at, it is actually different. Although costumes, sets and moods are very similar, cuts and movements are completely different. Since it is similar to the sense of camera work, it might be an outtake of “LIVE – THE MAMA TOUR”. ヒュー・パジャムとの二人三脚で80年代の音楽界を席巻していたGENESISとフィル・コリンズ。そんな当時の日本番組がギフト・リリース決定です。
本作に収められている番組は２つ。メインは、アルバム『GENESIS』をテーマにした特番“MAMA TOUR SPEICAL 1984”。そして、さらに５年後の1989年に出演した“ミュージック・フェア”をボーナス収録していいます。どちらも国内の記録マニアが録画していたオリジナルのエアチェック・マスターで、本邦初公開。これまでも数々の極上記録を提供してくださった方ですが、今回は輪をかけて凄い。当時のハイエンド機材を駆使した録画状態も素晴らしければ、経年劣化やヨレさえまるで感じられない保存状態も驚異的。映像にも音声にもわずかなノイズさえ入らず、それこそレーザーディスクとして売っていたんじゃないかと思ってしまう圧倒的な映像美です。
そのクオリティで描かれる番組は、若々しいメンバーの姿とインタビューで構成。コメントはすべて番組オリジナルです。それでは、２番組をそれぞれご紹介していきましょう。

【メイン：MAMA TOUR SPEICAL 1984】
まず登場するのは、関西地区で放送されたGENESIS特番。曲を流しつつ、合間合間にメンバーのコメントが挿入される構成でした。まず面白いのは、各曲の映像。冒頭の「That’s All」「Turn It On Again」こそお馴染みのPVですが、他はライヴシーン。「Abacab」は海外のテレビ番組と思しきスタジオライヴですが、それ以上に面白いのが「Keep It Dark」以降の６曲。“MAMA TOUR”の様子を伝えるライヴシーンなのですが、パッと見ると公式映像『LIVE – THE MAMA TOUR』からの流用のようで、実は違う。衣装もセットもムードも酷似しているものの、カットや動きがまるっきり異なる。カメラワークのセンスまで似ているので、もしかしたら『LIVE – THE MAMA TOUR』のアウトテイクかも知れません。しかも、これが非常に完成度が高い。考え抜かれた凝ったアングルで最新ステージの豪華さを見せつけつつ、観客の姿も声もない。ほとんどライヴ・クリップのような見事な映像なのです。
そして、合間に挟まるコメントも面白い。ダリル・ステューマーの綴りが「DANYL STUERNER」だったり、バリライト・システムが「ベリーライト」だったりする日本語字幕はご愛敬ですが、そこでフィルが「開発にはお金がかかったよ。初めてステージ使ったのも僕達だよ。ボウイやポリスも使ってますが、スケールが違います」と誇らしげに語る。前述したライヴ映像が証拠のように放送されるわけですが、実のところ今の目にはそれほど凄くない。それでもパイオニアとしての自信たっぷりなところに34年前の時代感が透けるのです。
さらに時代を感じるのはフィルの「日本に又行きたい。前回（78年）の時は、自分の離婚問題で落ち込んでいたから。だから毎晩さびしさをなくす為に飲んでいたよ」というコメント。当時は２番目の妻ジル・タヴェルマンと再婚したばかりのニヤケ顔も時代ですが、思えば当時はまだ1985年のソロ来日も1987年の“INVISIBLE TOUCH JAPAN TOUR”も実現していなかった。最後にフィルが「どうかレコードを買って下さい、そうすれば行けますから」と語りますが、つまりは「日本では十分に売れてないから行けない」。ここにも海外と日本での人気格差、1984年のリアルが透けるのです。

【ボーナス：ミュージック・フェア（1989年）】
そして、ボーナス映像は５年後となる平成元年。フィルがソロとして日本最長の音楽番組に出演した際の映像です。メインの1984年特番は海外収録の編集でしたが、こちらは来日しての出演。フィルが主演／音楽監督を務めた『フィル・コリンズ in バスター』のプロモーション来日でした。
この番組でも司会者と話しますが、その内容は有り体な社交辞令と映画の粗筋で大して面白くはない。しかし、その会話の相手は古手○祐子さんで、共演者は荻野○洋子さん。古○川さんは当時29歳ですし、荻○目さんも若干20歳。その輝く若々しさが実に眩しいのです。もちろん、重要なのはフィルの歌。この番組では映画のサントラ曲「Two Hearts」「A Groovy Kind Of Love」と「One More Night」の３曲を歌うわけですが、全国ネットの民放で３曲もの枠が充てられていた事自体が凄い。ここでは1985年・1987年を経ているので「４回目の来日」と語っており、５年間でフィルの人気が随分変わっていた事にも気付かされます。

落ち着き払ったダンシング・ヒーローが「（フィルに逢えて）いつも以上にエキサイティングしてしまいました」と語って本作は幕を閉じる。天井一面のバリライト・システムを誇る1984年のGENESISと、セレブ感たっぷりに主演映画をプロモーションする1989年のフィル・コリンズ。その双方を極上クオリティで楽しめる日本番組セットです。当時30代だった若々しい姿だけでなく、隅々からバブリーな時代の薫りも漂う傑作プロショット。どうぞ、平成最後の年末年始の供に本作をお選びください。
