1974年のモントリオールと言えば、定番中の大定番。ガブリエル時代でもっとも有名な放送音源として知られ、アナログ時代から幾多のタイトルを生み続けてきたもの。10年ほどの前にもノーカット盤『DIGESTING ENGLAND』が決定盤として一世を風靡しましたが、本作はそのリマスターではありません。近年になって登場したさらなるアップグレード・マスターなのです。
もちろん、定番音源の頂点マスターというだけでは“最高峰”とは言えない。なぜ、この音源が頂点的なのか。それは、ガブリエル時代をトータルで考えると見えてくる。まず、ガブリエル時代のライヴは大きく３つに分けてみましょう。

Ａ：1970年：アンソニー・フィリップス時代
Ｂ：1971年-1974年：黄金時代の通常コンサート
Ｃ：1974年-1975年：眩惑のブロードウェイ・ツアー

ところが、「Ｂ」のサウンドボードとなると極端に少なく、長さ・質の双方を満たすものといったら、ほぼ３本に絞られる。公式制作でもある『LIVE : TEST PRESSING 2LP』の1973年レスター公演、ボックス『GENESIS LIVE 1973–2007』でオフィシャル化された1973年レインボー・シアター公演、そして本作の1974年モントリオール公演。つまり、本作はオフィシャル絡みの２本と並び称される“ベスト３”のうちの１本なのです。しかも、その中でも本作は本命中の大本命。当時のGENESISは人気も実力も上り調子。アルバム『SELLING ENGLAND BY THE POUND』でも演奏陣の実力が飛躍的にアップしたのが印象的でしたが、彼らは日に日に上達していく時期にあり、後になればなるほどほど熟達したライヴを聴かせてくれる。本作のモントリオール公演は頂点サウンドボード３本の中で最も後期にあたり、一番美味しい演奏が詰まりに詰まったライヴ盤なのです。
そんなベストライヴの頂点マスターたる本作は、まさに究極の１本。既発『DIGESTING ENGLAND』よりも20秒も長く、ラジオDJの声もしっかりと入ったイントロからして新マスターなのは明らか。しかし、それ以上に重要なのは全編を貫くサウンド。ナチュラルで豊かな鳴りが素晴らしく、完璧としか思えなかった『DIGESTING ENGLAND』でさえ、本作の後に聴くと詰まったようなサウンドをイコライジングで人工的に仕上げたかのような不自然さが気になってしまう。まさしくパーフェクトなオフィシャル級……いえ、音圧稼ぎに走りがちなオフィシャルを超えてしまうサウンドなのです。
さらい本作を特別にしているのは、モントリールという場所。ケベック州の公用語はフランス語で、ストーリーを語るMCもフランス語で語りかけているのです。フィル・コリンズがフロントになってからは外国語の音源も多数残されていますが、ガブリエル時代のサウンドボードはほぼほぼ英語圏。特に上記した「Ｂ」のトップ３で海外公演なのは本作のモントリオール公演だけですので、フランス語MCでフルショウを動かすオフィシャル級ライヴアルバムは本作しかないなのです。

そんな本作は、本編プレス２CDと同じショウ……かと言うと、ちょっと違う。実は、モントリオール公演は同じ“ユニバーサル・スポーツ・センター”で「４月20日」「４月21日」の２日間連続で行われていました。そのうち、本編プレス２CDにもなったラジオ“CHOM-FM”の放送は「４月21日」ですが、映像が残されているのは前日の「４月20日」。本作は、その「４月20日」の映像に「４月21日」のFM音声を被せた映像作品なのです。
この映像を制作したのは、海外のGENESISマニア。映像は当時のフィルムですが、鮮やかな発色、ノイズのない画面は最高の保存状態。しかも、複数のカメラ映像を巧く組み上げており、ほぼプロショットとして見られるクオリティで72分間たっぷりと浸れるのです。ただ、同じ会場の連続公演とは言っても別のライヴですので、全編が完全にシンクロできるわけではなく、希に音のないピッキングがあったり、映像のないパート（主に曲間）は静止画になることもあります。しかし、映像があるパートのシンクロ度はハンパではない。トニー・バンクスの指先、フィル・コリンズのスティック、そしてフランス語MCを語るガブリエルの口元に至るまで、本当にこの映像のままかと思うほどにピタッと合わせている。静止画にしても、演奏内容をしっかりと把握したもの。例えば、ガブリエルがフルートを吹くシーンの映像が足りない場合は、フルートの演奏写真を何枚も使ったり、ズームやスライドさせることで幻想感の動きを演出する。微に入り、細に入り、全力で組み上げているのがビシビシ伝わってくる完成度なのです。
