The three major peaks are “LIVE: TEST PRESSING 2LP (Virtuoso 261)”, “DEFINITIVE MONTREAL 1974 (Virtuoso 268/269)”, and this work. A studio live collection of the BBC sessions of the early 70’s with the highest quality.
GENESIS in the Gabriel era has performed studio live at BBC several times, but until now there are only 5 times left. This work is a collection compiled by overseas core enthusiasts, and carefully selected the best tracks from currently known sound sources such as various air checks, recent rebroadcast versions and broadcast masters. It’s a compilation of the best version. Of course, the whole story is a super-superb stereo sound board. Let’s introduce each program immediately.
● DISC 1 “February 22, 1970: BBC NIGHTRIDE (5 songs)”
The first DISC 1 contains three programs from 1970 to 1972. The first to appear is a session from the “Genesis” era, when Anthony Phillips and John Mayhew were still enrolled. Five songs at Maida Vale Studios in London. “Shepherd,” “Pacidy,” and “Let Us Now Make Love” are not as good as the official takes of “GENESIS ARCHIVE 1967? 75” and “GENESIS 1970? 1975,” but they were not recorded there. The complete version of the broadcast, including “For Someone”. This live is not only a precious live performance of the Philips era, but also the oldest live record of GENESIS that still exists, and it is a famous take that you can listen to on the finest sound board in the fantasy era when the 12-string guitar is also beautifully examined.
● DISC 1 “May 10, 1971: SOUNDS OF THE SEVENTIES (2 songs)”
Next, two songs that appeared in the “invasion” era … but after joining Phil Collins & Steve Hackett. In the “invasion” era, only these two songs and the audience recording of the March 1971 performance in Belgium remain, which is also a very valuable early record. It was shown as a new song from “Invasion” before production in “1970 BBC NIGHTRIDE” earlier, but here too, “The Musical Box” is played even before “Nursery Cryme Music Box” is produced. Moreover, it is shown in a version of about 12 minutes that exceeds the album version. Without waiting for “Nursery Cryme Music Box”, the effect of joining Collins & Hackett is enormous, and the GENESIS world is in full bloom here. ● DISC 1 “January 9, 1972: SOUNDS OF THE SEVENTIES (4 songs, 5 takes)”
This is 4 songs from “SOUNDS OF THE SEVENTIES” that appeared again 8 months later (only “Harold The Barrel” contains 2 takes with different mixes). The first broadcast was in 1972, but here it is recorded as a rebroadcast version of BBC6. This time, two months after the release of “Nursery Cryme Music Box”, the masterpieces of that masterpiece are still lined up. Combined with the previous “The Musical Box”, it will be 5 out of 7 songs in the album, and the latter half of DISC 1 is a part that can be enjoyed almost as a “studio live version of the mysterious antique music box”.
◆ DISC 2 “March 2, 1972: IN CONCERT (3 songs)”
DISC 2 instead contains two 1972 programs. The first are the three songs of “IN CONCERT” from the “Nursery Cryme Music Box” era. It used to be the best sound board, but it was raised directly from the pre-FM BBC master DAT, and it was a few ranks higher. With the finest sound of the official class, you can fully enjoy the live performance that folds only the best masterpieces even in the “Nursery Cryme Music Box” number.
◆ DISC 2 “September 25, 1972: TOP GEAR (3 songs)”
Finally, the three songs of “TOP GEAR” that appeared six months later. It is a performance that has just started touring prior to the release of the masterpiece “Foxtrot”. In addition to “Watcher Of The Skies” and “Get’em Out By Friday” of “Foxtrot”, the rare song “Twilight Alehouse” which will be released as the B side of the single “I Know What I Like” will also be performed. doing.
“Get’em Out By Friday” was awakened from the pre-FM BBC master DAT, and “Twilight Alehouse” and “Watcher Of The Skies” are using the 2008 rebroadcast version. There is a master DAT for all three songs, but the rebroadcast version has been replaced because it sounds slightly better. In this way, the choice of this work is mercilessly rejected even if it is the master DAT of the broadcast song if the quality deteriorates even a little. So far, each take has been scrutinized and assembled.
This work is a live album that covers the BBC studio sessions of the Gabriel era that remain in the present age with the highest quality. However, that is not the only true value of this work. Of the three major works I mentioned at the beginning, “LIVE: TEST PRESSING 2LP” was the 1973 peak sound board, and “DEFINITIVE MONTREAL 1974” was the 1974 peak sound board. On the other hand, this work is also one that covers the peaks of 1970, 1971, and 1972. ●DISC 1「1971年５月10日：SOUNDS OF THE SEVENTIES（２曲）」
続いては『侵入』時代に出演した２曲……とは言っても、フィル・コリンズ＆スティーヴ・ハケット加入後。『侵入』時代というと、この２曲と1971年３月ベルギー公演のオーディエンス録音しか残っておらず、これまた非常に貴重な初期の記録です。先ほどの“1970年BBC NIGHTRIDE”でも制作前の『侵入』から新曲として披露されていましたが、こちらでも『怪奇骨董音楽箱』制作前にも関わらず「The Musical Box」を演奏。しかも、アルバムバージョンを超える約12分のバージョンで披露されています。『怪奇骨董音楽箱』を待つまでもなく、コリンズ＆ハケットの加入効果は絶大で、ここで一気にGENESISワールドが花開いている。世界中に無数のフォロワーを生んだプログレッシヴ・ロック理想のひな形が誕生した刹那をステレオ・サウンドボードで味わえる歴史的な極上テイクです。
●DISC 1「1972年１月９日：SOUNDS OF THE SEVENTIES（４曲・５テイク）」
これは８ヶ月後に再び出演した“SOUNDS OF THE SEVENTIES”からの４曲（「Harold The Barrel」だけはミックス違いの２テイクを収録）です。初放送は1972年でしたが、ここではBBC6の再放送バージョンで収録しています。今度は『怪奇骨董音楽箱』リリースの２ヶ月後の出演で、かの名盤の名曲がこれでもかと並ぶ。先ほどの「The Musical Box」と合わせると、アルバム全７曲中５曲にもなり、DISC 1後半はほぼ「スタジオ生演奏バージョンの怪奇骨董音楽箱」としても楽しめるパートなのです。
◆DISC 2「1972年３月２日：IN CONCERT（３曲）」
代わってのDISC 2は、1972年の番組を２つ収録。最初は『怪奇骨董音楽箱』時代の“IN CONCERT”の３曲です。これまでも極上のサウンドボードでしたが、これはプリFMのBBCマスターDATからダイレクトに起こされており、さらに数ランク上。まさにオフィシャル級の極上サウンドで、『怪奇骨董音楽箱』ナンバーでも極めつけの大作ばかりを畳みかけるライヴをたっぷりと楽しめます。
◆DISC 2「1972年９月25日：TOP GEAR（３曲）」
最後は、さらに半年後に出演した“TOP GEAR”の３曲。代表作『フォックストロット』を創り上げ、リリースに先立ってツアーを始めたばかりのパフォーマンスです。その『フォックストロット』の「Watcher Of The Skies」「Get’em Out By Friday」に加え、後にシングル『I Know What I Like』のＢ面として発表されることになるレア曲「Twilight Alehouse」も演奏しています。
「Get’em Out By Friday」はプリFMのBBCマスターDATから起こされ、「Twilight Alehouse」と「Watcher Of The Skies」は2008年の再放送バージョンを使用されています。３曲ともマスターDATが存在しますが、再放送バージョンの方がわずかに音が良いために差し替えられているわけです。このように、本作のチョイスはクオリティが少しでも落ちるなら、放送曲のマスターDATであっても容赦なく却下している。それほどまでにテイク１つひとつを厳密に精査して組まれているのです。
本作は、現代に残るガブリエル時代のBBCスタジオセッションを極上クオリティで網羅したライヴアルバムです。しかし、本作の真価はそれだけではありません。冒頭でお話しした３大頂点作のうち『LIVE: TEST PRESSING 2LP』は1973年の、『DEFINITIVE MONTREAL 1974』は1974年の頂点サウンドボードでした。それに対して本作は1970年・1971年・1972年の頂点を網羅した１本でもある。つまり、この３大名盤だけで最古のライヴ録音から『月影の騎士』までのGENESIS史を頂点サウンドボードで一気に聴けてしまうのです（さらにブロードウェイ時代も！という方には『DEFINITIVE LAKELAND 1975（Virtuoso 363/364）』をお薦めします）。
