Mike Millard’s Omoto Master is being excavated every week these days. Each one is superb, and the legendary recordings famous for history have been dramatically upgraded, and even the first appearance recordings that no one has heard have appeared one after another. Even the limited collectors of each band who weren’t interested in Millard until now, the shock is spreading, “What’s this ?!” And this work whose latest bullet is GENESIS edition. What’s more, it is a super-high-end audience recording of “Burbank performance on May 1, 1976”, which is the original YES / KING CRIMSON’s entry into Blueford.

This is the whole picture of “A TRICK OF THE TAIL TOUR”. The tour can be divided into a spring “North American leg” and a summer “European leg”, and “DEFINITIVE TRICK” and this work are also North American legs. It was a concert about two weeks after that super famous board.
This work recording such a show is just a shock. As mentioned above, the mirrored master is often upgraded or first appeared, but this recording is quite special. In conclusion, it’s a recording that was on the market for a while. There have been several Burbank performances in the past, but they are basically not mirrored recordings. However, some of the complementary parts used mirrored recording. Ordinarily, mirrored recording is a major classic that drives out other recordings, but for some reason it is only used for compensation … Perhaps only partial tapes were available in a fairly limited group. It was just part of the story, so it didn’t become a topic … It was a strange situation that I could not understand unless I thought about it.
Quiet talk suspension.
The maniac sound source situation has become long, but it’s only an aside. It’s just an academic pursuit. What is important is the “music album” itself that has appeared in front of you. This is undoubtedly the full recording by Millard, and it’s a super-luxury product that is unrivaled! ▽ Anyway, it is on and has a precise and direct feeling. Since it’s a mirrored recording, it sounds natural, but the vividness of this work is outstanding even by the standards of legendary masters. Perhaps the factor is in the venue. The “Starlight Bowl”, which became the site, is an amphitheater with an open space, which is rare for about 5000 people. There is no ceiling or wall that reflects sound, and the vivid sound with zero echo is directly picked up.
Of course, outdoor venues are not all-purpose. Depending on the case, the sound may be blown by the wind, or it may become squished due to the sense of distance. However, this work is a work of the master Mike Millard, and there is no need to worry about it. It has a great sense of stability without swaying, and has excellent midrange and high-density heavy bass. Especially surprising is the bass, the attack of the bass is sharp and sharp, and the vibe that creates the groove at the same time is the detailed level of the waveform. It’s so close and clear, but the peak doesn’t violate … Normally, an open space has no echo and the contours are sharp, but it is definitely spoiled for a rich feeling. It seems that it was “the first GENESIS recording” for Millard, but you can finish it as a transcendent sound without knowing the characteristics of the sound output.
The full show with the valuable Bill Bruford is drawn with such a sound. Roughly speaking, the set itself is the same as “DEFINITIVE TRICK”, and it is a live album where you can experience that masterpiece in the field with the best sound. このところ毎週のように発掘されているマイク・ミラードの大元マスター。その１本１本が極上で、歴史に名高い伝説録音の数々が格段にアップグレードし、誰も聴いた事のなかった初登場録音まで次々と登場。これまでミラードに興味のなかった各バンドの限定のコレクター達にも「なんだコレは!?」と衝撃が広がっています。そして、その最新弾がGENESIS編である本作。しかも、元YES／KING CRIMSONのブルーフォード入りとなる「1976年５月１日バーバンク公演」の超極上オーディエンス録音です。
その衝撃の内容の前に、まずはショウのポジション。このツアーと言えば、究極サウンドボード『DEFINITIVE TRICK（Virtuoso 059/060）』が象徴として君臨しておりますので、互いの位置関係にズームしながら当時の日程を振り返ってみましょう。

これが“A TRICK OF THE TAIL TOUR”の全体像。ツアーは春の「北米レッグ」と夏の「欧州レッグ」に二分でき、『DEFINITIVE TRICK』も本作も北米レッグ。あの超名盤の約２週間後にあたるコンサートでした。
そんなショウを記録した本作は、まさに衝撃。前述のようにミラード・マスターはアップグレードか初登場が多いのですが、この録音はかなり特殊。結論から言いますと「ちょっとだけ出回っていた録音」なのです。従来からバーバンク公演は何種類か出回っていたのですが、それらは基本的にミラード録音ではない。しかし、そのうちいくつかの補完パートでミラード録音が使われていたのです。普通であれば、ミラード録音が大定番として他録音を駆逐するものですが、なぜか補填に使われるのみ……。恐らくは、かなり限られた仲間内に部分的なテープだけが出回ったのでしょう。あくまでも一部だから話題にならなかった……そうとでも考えないと理解できない不思議な状況だったのです。
閑話休題。
ややマニアックな音源事情が長くなってしまいましたが、それはあくまでも余談……と言いますか、学術的な追究話にすぎない。重要なのは、こうして目の前に登場した「音楽アルバム」そのもの。これは紛れもなくミラードによるフル録音であり、しかも絶世の超極上品なのです！　とにかくオンで緻密でダイレクト感たっぷり。ミラード録音なのですから当たり前のような気もしますが、伝説名手の基準をもってしても本作の鮮やかさは群を抜いている。恐らく、その要因は会場にあるのではないでしょうか。現場となった“スターライト・ボウル”は、約5000人規模には珍しいオープン・スペースの円形劇場。音を反射する天井や壁がなく、反響ゼロのビビッドな出音をダイレクトに拾っているのです。
もちろん、野外会場も万能ではない。場合によっては音が風に流されたり、距離感からスカスカになったり……。しかし、本作は名手マイク・ミラードの作であり、その心配は無用。ビシッと揺るがない安定感は絶大ですし、手応えたっぷりの中音域も高密度な重低音も絶品。特に驚くのは低音で、ベースのアタックがゴリゴリと鋭く、同時にグルーヴを生み出すヴァイヴは波形レベルの細やかさ。そこまで密着＆クッキリとしていながら、ピークがビビることもない……。通常オープン・スペースは、反響ゼロで輪郭はクッキリとしてもリッチ感にはどうしてもスポイルされるもの。ミラードにとって“初GENESIS録音”だったそうですが、出音の特性も知らないままに超絶サウンドに仕上げるとは……。
そんなサウンドで描かれるのは、貴重なビル・ブルーフォード入りのフルショウ。ざっくばらんに言ってセット自体は『DEFINITIVE TRICK』と同一で、あの名盤を極上サウンドで現場体験するようなライヴアルバムです。『DEFINITIVE TRICK』を体験されていない方向けに整理しますと……

……と、このようになっています。４人時代GENESISと言えば『SECONDS OUT』が基準になると思いますが、そこでも聴けない曲が４曲もあり、特に「White Mountain」や「Entangled」は、ほぼほぼこのツアーだけの限定曲なのです。
それ以上なのが、全編を貫くアンサンブル。ピーター・ガブリエルの抜けた穴を埋めて余りあるフィル・コリンズの活躍ぶりも目覚ましいですが、やはり注目したいのはビル・ブルーフォード。きっちりとショウアップするバンドだけに「挑みかかるインプロヴィゼーション」とはいかないわけですが、やや神経質でもある細やかで歌心あるフレーズは健在。YESやKING CRIMSONでお馴染みなブルフォード節で塗り替えられたGENESISソングスをたっぷりと極上体験できるのです。
伝説の名手マイク・ミラードの新作にして、“ビル・ブルーフォード入りGENESIS”の最高峰体験盤。これはもう、GENESISの傑作と言うより音楽ジャンル“プログレッシヴ・ロック”の文化遺産です。このツアーには超絶サウンドボードの『DEFINITIVE TRICK』も存在するので、本作が「オフィシャル代わりの急先鋒」というわけではありません。むしろ、それ以上。「オーディエンスならではの美」の最高峰を極めている事にこそ真価があり、公式作品ばりのサウンド・クオリティでありながら超絶サウンドボードでさえ到底到達し得ない現実感と気品でGENESISを体験できる。そんな“極み”の音楽作品。どうぞ、永久保存プレス２CDで心ゆくまで存分にご堪能ください！
