“SELLING ENGLAND BY THE POUND TOUR” which was one of the best of Peter Gabriel era. An upgrade master that lets you experience the scene with the best sound is now available.
What is included in such a work is “March 3, 1974 Tower Theater Performance”. “Tower Theater” is world-renowned as the premier venue for Philadelphia, but its exact location is on the Upper Derby side of the city border. It is a vintage audience recording recorded at the famous venue. Speaking of 1974, the Peter Age GENESIS had the top “Knight Shadow Knight” and “Dazzling Broadway” tours, but this film is the “Knight Shadow Knight”. First, let’s check the show position from the big picture.

“August” Blood of dazzle “production start”

This is a panoramic view of the wonderful “SELLING ENGLAND BY THE POUND TOUR”. The details at that time, such as the number of performances, are not precise, as there are also obscure points in the records. Although it is said that there were three shows in the opening stage of the “North America # 2” leg in the Tower Theater, there are various theories whether it was another day or two shows a day. This work adopts the most powerful “March 3 afternoon performance (the first stage)” theory now. Such show recordings have been known for some time, but this work is neither a copy nor a remaster. The source group has been sourced at most 3rd Gene, but this work is a low gene master that has been excavated recently. It is an upgraded version that has been digitized directly from there.
The sound is just perfect. Although it is a vintage sense with a pillow phrase of “for the 70’s”, the beautiful and lonely core is on and the splendor jumps into the ear until the details. Furthermore, it is overwhelmingly different from the past. There were many masters who had their mid-highs lost during the dubbing process, and only highs were kinked in the process of dubbing, but this work is also outstanding in balance and freshness. The midrange, which was hard to hear until now, is also full of response, and the bass can be clearly felt even to the baseline. This is not just an upgrade that “you can hear middle bass too”. The group that had already been released had some middle bass recorded, but this work seems to be good. For example, you may be able to equalize existing mid-bass sounds. However, I can not prepare until the noise of the sound like this work, and I can not recover the lost subtlety. The beautiful performances left behind by the low generation masters overflow from the speakers.
And I am glad that it is “SELLING ENGLAND BY THE POUND TOUR”. This is a Peter Age GENESIS that embodies theater symphony, but the tour is particularly popular. Of course, the next “Broadway Tour” is a breakthrough, but because the theme was a complete reproduction of the 2-disc story, I could not expect the great variety of early GENESIS songs. On the other hand, this tour is full of enjoyment of the repertoire of the three consecutive works “Kydical bone music box”, “Foxtrot” and “Knight shadow knight” that embodies the symphonic ideal.
And this work is ideal among them. Peter period GENESIS was in a period of growth of the band, and the performance and the expression increased with the number of venues. “SELLING ENGLAND BY THE POUND TOUR” is also the end point, and the upper derby performance of this work is the late stage. What’s more, I’m not tired by having a half-month vacation from last year’s ‘Europe # 2’ and I’m also excited for the UK band to start a touring North American tour. Such beauty was tasted in the ultimate sound board album ‘DEFINITIVE MONTREAL 1974 (Virtuoso 268/269)’, but in addition to a sense of experience only because this recording is an audience recording, ‘More Fool Me’ You can also enjoy it.
Peterese GENESIS was a historical presence that produced countless followers more than any other prog band. Their own final destination was “Dazzling Broadway”, but the most fascinated by the world can be said to have been a series of three up to the “Knight of Knight”. This work is a great masterpiece of a live album that makes it to the scene with the best sound. Despite being a low generity, it wasn’t pressed for being a master of the past (with the expectation of future excavations), but the quality itself is an excellent item suitable for permanent preservation. Please enjoy the world of wonderful early GENESIS, please enjoy in this work carefully.

ピーター・ガブリエル時代のひとつの極みでもあった“SELLING ENGLAND BY THE POUND TOUR”。その現場を極上サウンドで体験させてくれるアップグレード・マスターが登場です。
そんな本作に収められているのは「1974年３月３日タワーシアター公演」。“タワーシアター”はフィラデルフィアの名会場として世界的に有名ですが、厳密な所在地は市境のアッパーダービー側。その名会場で記録されたヴィンテージ・オーディエンス録音です。1974年と言えば、ピーター時代GENESISでも頂点的な『月影の騎士』と『眩惑のブロードウェイ』の両ツアーが行われたわけですが、本作は『月影の騎士』の方。まずは、その全体像からショウのポジションを確かめてみましょう。

《８月『眩惑のブロードウェイ』製作開始》

これが素晴らしき“SELLING ENGLAND BY THE POUND TOUR”の全景。当時の記録にはあやふやな点もあるので公演数など、細部は厳密ではありません。タワーシアターにしても「北米#2」レッグの序盤に３公演あったとは言われているものの、それが別日だったのか１日２公演あったのか諸説ある。本作は、現在もっとも有力な「３月３日の午後公演（第１ステージ）」説を採用しています。そんなショウの録音は以前から知られてきましたが、本作はそのコピーでもリマスターでもありません。既発群は最高でも3rdジェネをソースとしてきましたが、本作は最近になって発掘されたロウジェネ・マスター。そこからダイレクトにデジタル化されたアップグレード版なのです。
そのサウンドは、まさに絶品。「70年代にしては」の枕詞が付くヴィンテージ感覚ではあるものの、美しくも逞しい芯がオンで詳細まで耳元に飛びこむ素晴らしさ。さらに、これまでとは異なる瑞々しさも圧倒的。既発群はダビングの過程で中低音が失われたのか、高音ばかりがキンキンしたマスターが多かったのですが、本作はバランスも鮮度もバツグン。今までは聞き取りづらかった中音域も手応えたっぷりで、低音もベースラインまではっきり感じ取れる。これは単に「中低音も聞こえる」というアップグレードではありません。既発群はわずかに記録されていた中低音もヨレていましたが、本作はビシッとしている。例えば、既発の中低音をイコライジングで上げる事はできるでしょう。しかし、本作のように鳴りのヨレまで整え、失われた機微を取り戻す事はできない。ロウジェネ・マスターだからこそ残されていた美しい演奏がスピーカーから溢れ出るのです。
そして、それが“SELLING ENGLAND BY THE POUND TOUR”だからこそ嬉しい。演劇系シンフォニック・プログレを体現したピーター時代のGENESISですが、中でもこのツアーは人気が高い。もちろん、次の“ブロードウェイ・ツアー”こそが画期的ではあるのですが、２枚組ストーリーの完全再現が主題なためにバラエティ豊かな初期GENESISの名曲は望めなかった。それに対し、このツアーはシンフォニックの理想を体現した３連作『怪奇骨董音楽箱』『フォックストロット』『月影の騎士』のレパートリーがたっぷりと楽しめるのです。
しかも、本作はその中でも理想的。ピーター時代GENESISはバンドの成長期にあり、場数を踏めば踏むほど演奏力も表現力も高まっていった。“SELLING ENGLAND BY THE POUND TOUR”はその到達点でもあり、本作のアッパーダービー公演はその後期。しかも、直前の「欧州#2」から半月の休暇を挟んだ事で疲れもなく、英国バンドにとって攻略すべき北米ツアーを開始する意欲にも燃えているのです。こうした美点は究極サウンドボード・アルバム『DEFINITIVE MONTREAL 1974（Virtuoso 268/269）』でも味わえましたが、本作はオーディエンス録音だからこその体験感に加え、あの超名盤でも聴けない「More Fool Me」も楽しめるのです。
ピーター時代のGENESISは、他のどのプログレ・バンドよりも無数のフォロワーを生み出した歴史的な存在でした。彼ら自身の終着点は『眩惑のブロードウェイ』でしたが、世界を最も魅了したのは『月影の騎士』までの３連作だったと言えるでしょう。本作は、その現場に極上サウンドで立てるライヴアルバムの大傑作なのです。ロウジェネとは言え、大元マスターではないために（今後の発掘への期待を込めて）プレス化は見送られましたが、クオリティ自体は永久保存に相応しい銘品です。素晴らしき初期GENESISの世界、どうぞ本作でじっくりとお楽しみください。
