【『FREE LIVE!』の続編とも言うべきストックホルム公演】
タイトルにもある通り、本作のメインは1970年のストックホルム公演。大名盤『HIGHWAY』時代を代表するサウンドボード音源です。公式の伝統盤『FREE LIVE!』は1970年１月のサンダーランド公演と９月クロイドン公演から製作されましたので、まさに“あの続き”となるものです。
しかも、クオリティも「もう１つのFREE LIVE!」とも言って然るべき超極上サウンド。従来から知られる定番サウンドボードではあるのですが、本作は数あるマスターの中でもベストの物を使用。さらに最新・細心マスタリングで磨き込み、最高峰を更新した１枚なのです。既発群も良いものはオフィシャル級でしたが、それでもピッチや位相がズレており、完全ではありませんでした。本作も大元のマスターは既発群と変わらないものの、そうした欠点が一切ない。録音自体のナチュラル感を最大限に保持しつつ、乱れやノイズを徹底的に補正したのです。
実際、本作のサウンドはまさに完全に公式クラス。距離感ゼロのド密着なのは当然としても、鳴りがとにかく絶品。単に芯が強靱なのではなく、アナログ感覚の密度の濃さが素晴らしい。その上でディテールの細やかさもハンパではない。デジタル的にエッジがギンギンに立っているわけではないのですが、ベースのヴァイヴは艶っぽく甘露の如きまろやかなヴァイヴがたっぷりと轟き、ギターは弦の振動を感じるほどにリアル。アンディ・フレイザーのメロディ・センスと、１音で繊細に表現するポール・コゾフの旨みを余さず満喫できるサウンドなのです。
もちろん、ドラムもヴォーカルも絶品。キットの真ん中に立っているようなドラムのステレオ感、歌詞を吐き出す呼気までビビッドなダイレクト感はサウンドボードの独壇場。しかも、ミックスが絶品。アタック感は『FREE LIVE!』ほどではありませんが、ブルースロックの滋味を伝えるまろやかな味わいやナチュラル感は本作の方が上回っているくらいなのです。
そんなサウンドで描かれるショウは『FREE LIVE!』とも似て非なるもの。活動の短かったオリジナルFREEはそれほどレパートリーが多くありませんでしたが、毎晩のようにセットを変えていた。ここで、ストックホルム公演のセットを整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。『FREE LIVE!』にない３曲は『LIVE AT THE BBC』でも聴けないですし、特に「Heavy Load」「Love You So」はワイト島でも演奏していないレパートリー。それをオフィシャル級ステレオ・サウンドボードで、しかも脂の乗りきった全盛期1970年のアンサンブルで味わえるのです。
【本編と被らない貴重な1969年のボーナス】
●1969年ボストン公演サウンドボード録音
そんな本編だけでも文化遺産級ですが、本作はさらに美味しい1969年のボーナス音源２種を収録しています。まず、1969年ボストン公演のサウンドボード３曲。これまた1969年を代表する有名サウンドボードですが、やはり最高峰を更新する新マスターなのです。
その更新は長さとサウンドの両面。そもそも、サウンドボードはステレオ版とモノラル版が知られており、音が良いのはモノラル版の方。本作に収録されているのもその１つなのですが、従来よりも鮮度が良く２分以上長いのです。実のところ、演奏曲は従来通り３曲ではあるものの、演奏後にも司会者と思しき人物の思しき音声も記録されている。これが妙に面白い。エフェクトがたっぷりとかかってマイク・チェックかな？と思わせつつも、内容的には次に出演するB.B.キングの紹介だったりもする。こんなにエコー全開な音自体も、観客に聴きづらいままでも構わず進行してしまう辺りも、何とも60年代ムードがたっぷりなのです。
もう１つポイントなのが３曲のセレクト。本編ストックホルム公演とは一切被らない「Walk In My Shadow」「Moonshine」「Songs Of Yesterday」なのです。本家『FREE LIVE!』も被らない曲のボーナス・トラックでボリュームアップしていましたが、このボストン公演サウンドボードも同じ役目を担ってくれる。しかも、「Songs Of Yesterday」はボートラ入り『FREE LIVE!』でも聴けなかった美味しいテイクなのです。
●1969年エッセン公演オーディエンス録音
そしてダメ押しのボーナスが1969年エッセン公演。これのみオーディエンス録音ですが、サウンドボードから続けて聴いても（勝るとは言えないものの）聴き劣りしない見事な録音。１曲だけではありますが、これも本編ストックホルム公演と被らない「Trouble On Double Time」。先述の通り、当時のFREEは決してレパートリーの多いバンドではなかったわけですが、本作１枚で13曲も楽しめるわけです。
『FIRE AND WATER』『HIGHWAY』を立て続けにリリースし、さらに『FREE LIVE!』まで創り上げてしまった1970年のFREE。英国ロックには百花繚乱の英雄たちがひしめいていましたが、当時の彼らほど才気走ったバンドはいなかったのではないでしょうか。本作は、そんな奇跡のブルースロックを13曲・約74分に渡って楽しめてしまうサウンドボード・アルバム。その最高峰更新盤です。まさに文化遺産となる１枚。輝きを永久に失わないプレスCDで心ゆくまでお楽しみください。
