It has become clear in the last few years that Mike Millard has recorded not only bands such as ZEP and Jesus, but also many other artists, but even so, please record a surprisingly large number of performances. It was Fleetwood Mac. So far, he has recorded the stage from 1977 to 1980, when he was enjoying the peak of popularity in the United States, with excellent quality. At first glance, it may seem different from Millard’s taste, but even he can’t ignore it … on the contrary, he inadvertently proves that it was a climax that made him want to go to live many times. it might be.
As if to support it, the Millered Master released this time was the LA Forum in 1979 from the tour that was held with “TUSK”. As you may know, from this tour, the release of the masterpiece “HOLLYWOOD BOWL 1980: MIKE MILLARD MASTER TAPES”, which captures the pattern of the Hollywood Bowl in 1980 with mirrored quality, is also new to my memory. After all, it is also a tour that occupies the core of the official “LIVE”. However, this excavation was still a new and valuable sound source excavation suitable for astonishing enthusiasts all over the world.
In the first place, “LIVE” was overwhelmingly adopted mainly in the 80’s leg even in the same “TUSK” tour, and the take from the 1979 leg that was sewn in between was the one in November. Furthermore, “TUSK TOUR 1979-1980”, which is a CD-R release but a masterpiece of all sound boards, is also St. Louis in November. “BOSTON TUSK”, which has been very popular as the best recording by Steve Hopkins while releasing the CD-R, also caught the stage in November. At first glance, the “TUSK” tour seemed to be blessed with sound sources including officials, but in fact, there were no items until December, which is the final process of 1979, but rather wrapped in a veil. I even felt like I was sick.
The mirrored master was unearthed in such a situation, but he did capture the stage in December, which could be called a missing link. The only thing that happened was a cut that hit the timing of the tape change in the middle of “You Make Loving Fun” when the live was approaching the second half, but the sound was so good that it didn’t bother me. The scene where Lindsey Buckingham knocks down the solo in the subsequent “I’m So Afraid” is completely official level. At first glance, the sound image is so illusion that it is a sound board. Also, since it is the end of the 1979 leg, it is vividly transmitted that all the members are doing their best to hear the enthusiasm.
At the Hollywood Bowl, the live opening was “Monday Morning”, but of course it started with “Say You Love Me” in 1979. More than that, this excavation is also attractive in that “Second Hand News”, which was included in the set list only on the leg in December 1979, can be heard with the best sound quality. The dashing song is a song that shines at the end of the live, and above all, the deluxe edition of “LIVE” was played at the same LA Forum, but the take of the “MIRAGE” tour of 1982 was adopted by more. On the other hand, it is extremely important that the live version of the more accurate time is recorded here.
This is the best document by Millard from the “TUSK” tour, which is a perfect pair with “HOLLYWOOD BOWL 1980: MIKE MILLARD MASTER TAPES”. それを裏付けるかの如く、今回公開されたミラード・マスターは「TUSK」を引っ提げて行われたツアーから1979年のLAフォーラム。ご存じかと思われますが、既にこのツアーからは80年のハリウッド・ボウルでの模様をミラード・クオリティで捉えた名盤「HOLLYWOOD BOWL 1980: MIKE MILLARD MASTER TAPES」のリリースも記憶に新しいところですし、何と言ってもオフィシャルの「LIVE」の中核を占めたツアーでもある。ところが、それでもなお今回の発掘は世界中のマニアを驚かせるに相応しい、新たなる貴重音源の発掘でもあったのです。
そもそも「LIVE」は同じ「TUSK」ツアーでも圧倒的に80年レグを中心に採用していましたし、その合間を縫って散りばめられていた79年レグからのテイクは11月のもの。さらにはCD-Rリリースでありながらオールサウンドボードの名盤である「TUSK TOUR 1979-1980」もやはり11月のセントルイス。これまたCD-Rリリースながらスティーブ・ホプキンス録音による極上録音として大好評を博し続けている「BOSTON TUSK」もまた11月のステージを捉えていた。一見、オフィシャル込みで音源に恵まれているように思えた「TUSK」ツアーではありますが、実のところ79年の最終行程である12月に関しては今まで一切のアイテムが存在せず、むしろベールに包まれた感すらあったのです。
そうした中で発掘された今回のミラード・マスターですが、正にミッシング・リンクと言えた12月のステージを捉えてくれていたとは。この月は10回の公演が行われているのですが、それらの中でもLAフォーラムでは間にサンディエゴでの一夜を挟んだ飛び石スケジュールにてトータル5回の公演が行われています。ミラードにとってホームのアリーナであるLAフォーラム、彼は三日目の公演にて録音を敢行してくれました。
毎度あまりのクオリティの高さに驚かされてばかりのミラード・マスターではありますが、今回の録音たるやJEMSをして「彼のフリートウッド・マック録音の中ではこれがベストではないか？」と言わしめるほど別格の録音状態。凄まじいまでにオンな音像であるばかりか、周囲の盛り上がりもほとんど拾っていない。フォーラムより小さな会場での録音であった「HOLLYWOOD BOWL 1980: MIKE MILLARD MASTER TAPES」よりも音像が近くて周りが静かという、いかにミラードがLAフォーラムでの録音を得意としていたのかを裏付けるような極上クオリティなのです。この凄まじい音質で「TUSK」ツアー79年12月の模様が聞けるとは！
唯一、ライブが後半に差し掛かった「You Make Loving Fun」の途中でテープ・チェンジのタイミングに当たってしまったカットが生じてしまうのが玉に瑕ですが、それがまるで気にならないほど音がイイ。それに続いて演奏された「I’m So Afraid」でリンジー・バッキンガムがソロを弾き倒す場面などは完全にオフィシャル・レベル。パッと聞いた感じでは、それこそサウンドボードかと錯覚してしまいそうなほどの音像。また79年レグの終盤ということもあり、メンバー全員が力を出し切らんばかりの熱演を聞かせてくれる様子も生々しいほどに伝わってくる。
ハリウッド・ボウルではライブのオープニングが「Monday Morning」でしたが、79年はもちろん「Say You Love Me」から始まるというパターン。それ以上に79年12月レグのみでセットリストに組み入れられた「Second Hand News」が極上音質で聞かれるという点でも今回の発掘は魅力的。威勢のいい同曲はライブの終盤に映える曲調ですし、何より「LIVE」のデラックス・エディションには同じLAフォーラムでの演奏ながら、よりによって82年の「MIRAGE」ツアーのテイクが採用されてしまったのに対し、ここではより正確な時期のライブバージョンが記録されているというのが極めて重要。
これはもう「HOLLYWOOD BOWL 1980: MIKE MILLARD MASTER TAPES」と見事なまでに対をなす「TUSK」ツアーからのミラードによる最高のドキュメント。これで「TUSK」ツアーそれぞれの年代を代表する彼の極上オーディエンスが出揃ったことになります。これほどのクオリティになると、もうマニアでなく一般の音楽ファンにも安心して推せる最高のオーディエンスアルバム。正に裏「LIVE」と呼びたくなる衝撃の発掘。今回もミラードがやってくれました！
