1981年のエリック・クラプトン・ジャパン・ツアーから、最終日となった東京新宿厚生年金会館大ホールでの公演を極上レベルのステレオ・オーディエンス録音で完全収録しています。長い間この日の音源は日の目を見ていませんでしたが、2009年に当店が優良なマスターを発掘し、Tricornレーベルより「Final Show」のタイトルで、さらに2010年にはそれを上回るマスターを当店が発掘し、同レーベルより「Wonderful Farewell」のタイトルでリリースしました。2010年マスターは音がクリアでドラム・サウンドもしっかり収められていて非常に聴きやすいレベルでしたが、今回本盤に使用されたマスターは、それを上回るクオリティを備えたものです。これも完全初登場の当店オリジナル・マスターになります。公演から数えて31年という年月。発掘された時には、このような優れたマスターが眠っていたことに信じられない思いでした。この音質は既発盤のすべてを上回る、この日のベストと断言できます。既発盤をお持ちのファンも多いと思いますが、ファンならばこそ、是非この最高音質をご確認いただきたいものです。
この日は千秋楽ということもあって、クラプトンとバンドは「打ち上げ」的な気分だったらしく、終盤に面白い試みを展開します。Cocaineでは85年以降のアレンジのように、イントロをジャム風に始めていて、オーディエンスが手拍子で合せているのもいい感じです。また同曲の途中(２コーラス目の途中)でオーディエンスが盛り上がっている箇所がありますが、これは当日の目撃談によると、ツアー・スタッフをワイヤーで宙吊りにしてステージに登場させたとのことです。クラプトンはニヤニヤしながらそれを眺めてプレイしていたそうですが、長きに渡る日本公演でこんなことをしたのはこの日だけでした。そしてクラプトンは、自分のソロ・パートが終わると、「Big applause for Eddie!(エディに喝采を！)」とアナウンスしています(宙吊りにされたのはエディというスタッフだったのでしょう)。そのため、このテイクはあまり締まった出来ではなくなってしまっていますが。Laylaでのボーカルもどうも危なっかしい感じですし、後奏のソロはスライドでプレイし、またシングルノートのソロに戻しています。レギュラー・チューニングでクラプトンがスライドをプレイするのは非常に珍しいことと言えます。アンコール前のメンバー紹介では、スタッフか誰かがDJ風のコメントを追加していたりします。この日のアンコールでは、特別にスロー・ブルースSad Sad Dayがプレイされていますが、２分ほどプレイしたところで突然演奏をストップして、Further On Up The Roadを始めています。そしてまた最後にはBright Light, Big Cityにメドレーするというレアな展開。レアな演出が頻発するので、お祭り気分だったのかと思いきや、そうではなく、全編でタイトな演奏を呈示している点でクラプトンのステージに対する真摯なところを感じさせるものです。中でもRamblin’ On My Mind～Have You Ever Loved A Womanは、歌、ギター共に入魂のパフォーマンスとなっています。また、歴代のクラプトン・バンドでは唯一となる、男性メンバーだけによる三声コーラスによる深みのある歌唱も楽しめます。全編を通じて、とてもレアで面白い記録となったこの日。決定版と言うべきベストな音質の本盤がプレスCDにて限定リリースです。
