ディスク1の冒頭には、69年、ブラインド・フェイス消滅後、クラプトンがサイドマンとして加入していたデラニー＆ボニー＆フレンズ時代にテレビ出演した際のアコースティックライブセッションが2曲収められています。1曲目は近年流出した映像でご覧になった方も多いと思いますが、実はこの時にはもう1曲が収録されていたのです。それが2曲目のWill The Circle Be Unbrokenです。この曲もデラニー＆ボニーのレパートリーで、この曲でのクラプトンはアコースティックでリズムギターを担当していますので、彼のプレイを聴き分けるのは難しいのですが、参加したことは間違いない、激レアテイクと言っていいでしょう。本邦初公開となるこのテイクが本盤の目玉と言ってもいいくらいです。続いては、同じくテレビ番組でのライブセッションで、82年のチャス＆デイブ（イギリスのパブ・ロックデュオ）をバックにしてのクリスマス・スタジオライブです。この映像も近年出回っていますので、ご存知のファンも多いと思いますが、クラプトンのお気に入りだったチャス＆デイブとのライブ共演をサウンドボードで捉えたものはこの音源しかありませんので、これもまた貴重と言えるでしょう。そしてこのディスクの後半には、88年の「ネルソン・マンデラ・コンサート」での、クラプトンがゲスト参加したダイアー・ストレイツのステージが完璧なステレオ・サウンドボードで完全収録されています。元々はアナログのラジオショー・ディスクで配給されたものですが、ここではスクラッチノイズ一切なしの元マスターからの収録となっています。1曲目の曲中におけるM.ノップラーによるメンバー紹介で、名刺代わりにキレキレのソロを披露するクラプトンが素晴らしいです。
ディスク2前半には86年にロンドンのクラブでのロバート・クレイ・バンドのギグに飛入りしたライブ音源が収録されています。アメリカの音楽雑誌「Guitar Player」の付録ソノシートでPhone Boothのみがリリースされたことはありますが、本盤がそのステージの完全版となります。続いてはクラプトンの盟友と言ってもよいサキソフォニスト、デヴィッド・サンボーンがホストを務めるテレビ番組でのスタジオライブです。ロバート・クレイがゲスト参加したOld Loveは珠玉のテイクと言えるでしょう。終盤に収録されているのは、93年、ニューヨーク、アポロ・シアターでのB.B.キングをセレブレートするイベントでのレジェンド・ブルースマンたちとの共演ステージです。各人の個性が目一杯発揮されるここでのソロ回しは絶品です。ジェフ・ベックも参加しています。
ディスク3には様々なテイクが収録されています。ストーンズとの未発表スタジオ・セッション、アルバム「461」、「AUGUST」のスタジオ・アウトテイク、バディ・ホリーのバックバンド、クリケッツ＆アルバート・リーとのライブ共演、ロカビリーの帝王カール・パーキンスとのクラブ・ギグ(僅かにプチノイズが散見しています)などなど。因みにLady Of Veronaとは、当時クラプトンが息子を生ませた恋人ロリ・デル・サントのことで、夫人のパティ・ボイドの手前、彼女を刺激しないようアルバムから落としたという逸話のあるナンバーです。
ディスク4には、98年のホワイトハウスでのチャリティ・クリスマスショーのライブ、同年のD.サンボーンのテレビ番組でのスタジオ・セッション、99年のホワイトハウスでのチャリティ・イベントでのライブが収録されています。オフィシャルで映像がリリースされているものもありますが、本盤はそれとは別ミックスになっています。特に聴きものは、レニー・クラヴィッツとのAll Along The Watchtowerでしょう。クラプトンがこれほど燃え上がるソロを決めているのも珍しいもので、この時のクラプトンがジミ・ヘンを意識していたことは間違いないと思えるプレイです。
4CD聴き通しても飽きることのない充実した内容。これまでクラプトンのセッションまでは興味のなかった方も聴いていただくと、彼の凄さをまざまざと実感されることでしょう。本盤に収められた音源で証明される変幻自在・百花繚乱・八面六臂のプレイでキャリアを積み重ねてきたエリック・クラプトン。70歳を迎えた彼のセレブレートアイテムとしてご鑑賞いただきたいタイトルです。
