エリック・クラプトンの記念すべき、初の日本でのステージを捉えた音源2種を収録。勿論、今回リリースされる「THE FIRST SHOW IN JAPAN」とは完全ディフ・マスターです。ディスク１＆２には「Recorder 1」音源と称し、ちょうど2年前にただ一度ギフトリリースされ、マニアから好評を得た初登場音源「FIRST CONCERT IN JAPAN」音源を収録。若干ステージとの距離感があり、今回のプレス盤に比べると若干ステージとの距離感があり、歓声も大きめに拾ってしまっているうえ、録音もモノラルではありますが、実際は音に拡がりがあり、なかなかクリアでバランスの良いサウンドで収録されています。何と言っても2年前まで何処にも出回っていなかったマスターカセットからの優良音源収録です。当時のカセット録音としては優秀なレベルであり、未聴・未所有のファンは、絶対に手に入れるべき音源であります。ディスク３＆４には、2001年にリリースにMasterportレーベル第一弾としてリリースされた「FIRST VISIT, FIRST NIGHT」を、このたび、新たにリマスター収録。オリジナルリリースの既発では強めのイコライズ感が感じられましたが、現行の技術でそれを大元のクリアーな音に戻しました。よって聴きやすさはもちろん、音質は格段にアップし、プレスCD化も可能なほどの優良音源として、13年の時を経て名音源が最高の状態で蘇りました。相変わらず、ステージからの距離は感じられますが、しっかりとした太めな音で記録された本テイクは、間違いなくファン必聴です。両音源ともに、アンコールの「Blues Power」のみ未収録ですが、記念すべき初来日初日公演の様子が、どちらも優良なマスター・クオリティで克明に捉えられています。ショウは、日本にやって来る前にレコーディングしたばかりの、「There’s One In Every Crows」に収録されることになる名曲Better Make It Throughのほか、Singin’ The BluesやLittle Rachelを逸早く披露していたり、Badgeとのメドレーでエヴァリー・ブラザースのAll I Have To Do Is Dreamのインスト・バージョンを演奏していたり、と興味深いセットリストになっていました。Tell The Truthの前の、アコースティックからギブソン・エクスプローラに持ち替えるシーンで会場が喝采に沸き返るシーンには、当時のオーディエンスがエレクトリックを弾くクラプトンに期待していたことがよく分かります。人気曲Laylaの前に緩めのナンバーを３曲も続け、オーディエンスを消沈気味にさせますが、Laylaで一気に会場を総立ちにさせ、大混乱を引き起こす様子がリアルに伝わってきます。このLaylaの後奏のソロで真価を発揮するクラプトンのプレイも聴きものです。大混乱のLaylaでは、こもった音質の既発盤が多かったのですが、本盤ではこの曲でも、ほど良いバランスとクリアさで収録されています。当時の評では「クラプトンがあまりギターを弾かなかった」と言われていましたが、改めて聴くと、この時期既にジョージ・テリーとのツイン・リード体制を確立していたクラプトンの充実のステージが確認できます。こうしたドキュメントをリアルに伝える非常に貴重かつ優秀なマスター2種を、今回、豪華ボーナスディスクとして提供します。クラプトンマニアの方のみならず、広くロックファンにお奨めできる優れた内容です。
