And in July and August, Clapton, who liked that feeling, took part in a meeting session with a British sesseman based on the preparation of “BACKLESS” producer Glin Johns, and adopted that musician for the band. この年にはアルバムのリリースはありませんでした。その理由は、前年に「BACKLESS」がリリースされていたこと、そして当該アルバムをレコーディングしたバンド(タルサ・トップス)でのプロモーション・ツアーを行なう必要があったからです。ところが、です。3月から6月までタルサ・トップスを率いて行なったツアーが終わると、クラプトンは何とアルバート・リーだけを残し、6年間も一緒にやってきた他のメンバー全員を解雇してしまったのです。そして7月、8月に「BACKLESS」のプロデューサー、グリン・ジョンズの取り計らいにより、イギリスのセッションマンと顔合わせセッションを行い、そのフィーリングを気に入ったクラプトンは、そのミュージシャンをバンドに採用しました。ここに全員がイギリス人という、69年のブラインド・フェイス以来の布陣が誕生したのです。しかしセッションマンの彼らはライブステージでの実力が未知数でした。そのためクラプトンは9月に2回のウォームアップ・ギグをセッティングします。9月7日はクラプトンの地元の小ホールで初めてのライブを行ない、30日にはシアタークラスの会場で二度目のギグを行なってバンドの実力を測ります。それが本盤に収録された日でした。ここでバンドのポテンシャルを確認したクラプトンは精力的にツアーを再開します。その行程で行なわれたジャパン・ツアーから名ライブ盤「JUST ONE NIGHT」が生まれたことはファンならずともご存知でしょう。言わば、本盤のコンサートがあってこそ、あの名ライブ盤の誕生に繋がっていったのです。セットリストを見ていただくと、「JUST ONE NIGHT」とは異なり、やはり直近のアルバム「BACKLESS」からのナンバーが4曲も採り上げられています。そして未だにスタジオ・バージョンが発表されていないレア曲La La Laを演奏しています。この曲が聴ける公演はほとんどないだけに、レア極まりないと言えます。さらにはクラプトンのアイデンティティとも言える人気曲Laylaを演奏していません(この後のツアーでは復活させましたが)。コンサートでこの曲をオミットするというパターンは翌年のツアーに見られましたが、それはクラプトン本人がやるのに飽きたためと推察できます。この曲1曲でコンサートの様相がそれまでと一変してしまう。いい意味では爆発的な勢いのある曲ですが、悪い意味ではこの曲を聴くためにコンサートに来ているファンのレスポンスが他の曲では薄い、という現象をクラプトン本人も気づいていたと言えます。しかし、この日は違う理由でLaylaを演奏しなかったのではないかと思われるのです。Laylaという曲は、オリジナル・バージョンが神懸かり的なパワーを備えているだけに、カバーするミュージシャン、バンドにはそれ相応のパワーとフィーリング、センスが求められます。この時点のこのニューバンドではまだLaylaがクラプトンの満足いくレベルに達していなかったためにオミットしたのではないかと思えるのです。その代わり、イギリス人気質に裏付けられた手堅い演奏を全編で聴くことができます。ブルースでさえもかちっとプレイする彼らのグルーヴは、この時期でしか聴けない魅力に満ちていると言えるかもしれません。「JUST ONE NIGHT」では聴けないナンバーが4曲あるなど、まだニューバンドに手探り状態だった時期を捉えたオール・ブリティッシュバンド初期のドキュメントは、クラプトンのキャリア上重要な節目を明らかにするものです。地元イギリスでの公演の割りには珍しく野次を飛ばすオーディエンスが多く、クラプトンもWonderful Tonightのイントロをミスるなど、多少その影響を受けているのも一興といったところでしょうか。この日を観たファンのレビューによると、クラプトンはきれいさっぱりと髭を剃り落とし、ダークブルーのスーツに身を固めたお洒落なルックスだったそうです。ニューバンドでの船出に気合十分だったことが窺えます。一部の海外コレクターのみが秘匿していたと推測される、この貴重な時期の初公開マスター、しかも当店だけのグレードアップ・バージョンが本盤です。限定プレスCDでのリリースとなりますので、お早めのオーダーをお願い致します。
