これを見ていただくと、ボブ・ディランやザ・バンドのメンバー全員が参加した当時のニューアルバム「NO REASON TO CRY」のプロモーションを兼ねたツアーであったことがお判りいただけると思います（アルバムはこの公演の翌日！の発売でした）。そのツアーの最初期に当たったこの日は、実はフェスティバルへの出演でした。この会場は、アメリカのハリウッドボウルのような半球状の、森に囲まれた野外ステージで、ステージ前には池があり、オーディエンスは池を隔てた場所から鑑賞するという特殊な構造でした。そのため、70年代には夏場にフェスティバルがよく開催された会場でした。この日は「ガーデン・パーティ」と銘打っての恒例のフェスティバルが開催され、第9回に当たっていました。クラプトンはヘッドライナーとしてトリに出演しましたが、この日の出演者にはクラプトンが敬愛するブルースマン、フレディ・キングも名を連ねていました。そのため、フレディがクラプトンのセットのアンコールに飛入りするという嬉しいハプニングも起こりました。それのみならず、このフェスを観に来ていたジャズギタリストのラリー・コリエル、クラプトンとは親しいローリング・ストーンズのロニー・ウッドらも飛入りするという、フェスらしい多くのゲストによる賑やかな共演が実現した日でもあります。後にも先にもコリエルとの共演はこの一度きり。しかもコリエルは参加した2曲でソロまでとっている！13分に及ぶブルースメドレーでは、ジャズもブルースも根を同じくする黒人音楽だけに名手と言われたコリエルの素晴らしいソロが聴けます。さらに同曲終盤ではクラプトンとのスリリングなギターバトルも実現しています。Laylaの後奏でもコリエルはなかなか味のあるソロを披露しており、聴きごたえのある共演となっています。その後アンコールではフレディ・キングとロニー・ウッドが加わります。こんなパターンは、クラプトンのゲスト共演ライブの中でも激レアと言っていいでしょう。中でもステージ上にいた5人のギタリストがソロでぶつかり合うアンコールナンバーは最大の聴きどころです。中間のソロは、クラプトン～フレディ～ロニー・ウッド～ラリー・コリエル～ジョージ・テリー（クラプトンバンドのセカンドギタリスト）と各人に回されます。五人の火を噴くようなソロ競演には息を飲みます。本盤にはこれだけでも聴く価値ありと言えるレアな共演部分がしっかり収められていますが、何といってもニューアルバムのリリースを控えてやる気満々のクラプトンのプレイが冴え渡った日として記憶しておいていただきたいライブです。

【意欲満々のクラプトンのプレイをクリアに録音したオーディエンス録音の見本】

重鎮テーパーの録音したマスターは、ステージ前の池を挟んだ前列席から何も遮るもののない環境でダイレクトにPAからのサウンドを収録したもので、野外にもかかわらず、音が拡散することもなく、芯のある迫力満点のバンドサウンドを的確に捉えています。既発盤では増幅されてしまった感のあったヒスノイズや大音量時の雑味などが抑えられ、迫力あるきれいなサウンドで全編を楽しむことができます。マスターのピッチは正常で、当店でリマスターした点といえば、全体として高音域がキツかったので緩和したことと、右チャンネルに不規則に高周波が発生していたため緩和したくらいです。
74年のカムバックツアーのステージのようにアコースティックギターを抱え登場したクラプトンは、冒頭で「今日は新曲をやるよ！」とアナウンスしています。そのとおりスタンディングで始めたのは、ニューナンバーHello Old Friends。アルバムでもオープニングを飾っていたナンバーです。そのムードそのままにほのぼのとステージを始めたクラプトンは、次曲でもニューアルバムからのナンバーを披露。ここでの当曲はまるでザ・バンドの演奏のようなムードを醸し出しています。頭2曲ではクラプトンはマーティンを抱えてのストロークプレイです。次曲Tell The Truthではご機嫌なクラプトンが、1番の歌詞「There you sit there, looking so cool.」を「There you sit there, wonderful crowd」と歌い替えています。そんなご機嫌なクラプトンにリードされてエネルギッシュな演奏が終わると、主催者側からステージ前に殺到したオーディエンスに向けて、その位置に留まるよう指導のアナウンスがあります。ステージに上がった場合はコンサートを中止するとの警告も発せられています。それくらいオーディエンスはクラプトンのパフォーマンスにエキサイトし、池を泳いで渡ってきてしまったということです。酔っ払っている（と思われる）クラプトンはオーディエンスに向かって「なんなら僕んちに来るかい？」と叫んで笑いを誘っています。こうした会場のノリも最高の中でクラプトンとバンドのタイトな演奏は続いていきます。Double Troubleをセカンドギターのジョージ・テリーのソロで終えるというパターンも珍しいですが、ここでのテリーのソロも素晴らしいもの。フェスならではのショートセットでしたが、聴きどころはたっぷり。のめり込んでうるうちに聴き通せてしまうほど。クラプトンの好調ぶりが確認できる素晴らしいソースです。この日を録音者のマスターからダイレクトに収録し、リマスターで聴きやすくして音盤化したのが本作ということになります。この日のリリース史上、最高音質を実現した本盤をどうぞお見逃しなく。どうぞお早めのオーダーをお願い致します。
