今週は、JEMSの初公開秘蔵ライブ音源をもう一つリリース致します！今から43年前。3年間のリタイアからカムバックしたこの年の、2回目となる全米ツアーから10月2日のカナダ、トロント公演のファースト・ジェネレーションマスターをJEMSが公開してくれたのです。このステレオ・オーディエンスソースは、かつて「LOOKING BACK」という日本製の既発ブートレッグでリリースされていたのですが、今回のJEMSマスターはそれとは2ランク以上も音質が向上した、抜群のクリアネスとサウンドバランスを誇るものです。しかも既発マスターは狭い音場のモノラルだったものが、今回のマスターでは、何と広がりのあるステレオになっていました！この音質で聴くこの日は新たな印象を抱かせるもので、セットリストがカムバックしてすぐの全米ツアー時とは異なっているのが新鮮です。なぜなら、1回目の全米ツアーとこの2回目のツアーの間に、早くも「461 OCEAN BOULEVARD」に続くアルバム「THERE’S ONE IN EVERY CROWD」のレコーディングを完了していたからです。そのため、「THERE’S ONE IN EVERY CROWD」収録のナンバーも披露したのがこのツアーの聴かせどころでした。そしてこのツアー後には初のジャパン・ツアーを控えていました。その点では、クラプトンが初めて降り立つ日本という国を意識した、「ジャパン・ツアー」のための少し長いウォームアップ・ギグがこの短期全米ツアーだったのかもしれません。クラプトンがトロントのステージに立ちながら、まだ見ぬ国、日本への思いを馳せていたと考えると、このステージへの興味もさらに大きくなるのではないかと思います。ところが、このアップグレード版JEMS音源には欠点が満載でした。まず、何と言ってもピッチが大幅に狂っていたこと。全体を通して50～80%程度もピッチが高かったのです。Tell the Truthにおいては、最大200％程度というピッチの狂いでした。しかもテープの経年劣化により、この狂いがランダムに現われていたのです。そこを当店のプロエンジニアは細かくチェックし、丁寧にアジャスト致しました。聴くに堪えなかったTell the Truth終盤などは見事に聴きやすくなっています（但し、後半の激しいテープ揺れ箇所はそのままにせざるを得ませんでした)。そして左右チャンネルの音圧バランスが崩れていましたので、それを調整。さらに致命的だったのは、JEMSの収録曲順がバラバラで、序盤の2曲が未収録、Willie And The Hand Jiveも途中から収録という不完全収録だったことです。そこで当店は曲順を当日のセットリストどおりに入れ替えました。そして未収録部分（2曲＋Willie And The Hand Jiveの序盤）を既発盤をマスタリングし、低音域を軽減してJEMSの高音質に近づけた上で補填し、完全収録を実現したのです。Willie And The Hand Jiveを聴いていただくと、当店エンジニアの見事なクロスフェード処理を実感していただけるでしょう。その結果、本盤がこの日の決定版と断言できるものになりました。ネットのJEMSそのままで満足されているクラプトンマニアの方々にこそ聴いていただきたい最上級アップグレード盤が本盤です。
さて、ここでこの日の公演がこのカムバックイヤーでどのような位置づけだったのかを見ていきましょう。

6月からのカムバック全米ツアーの大成功で気を良くし、キャリアの再出発に自信を持ったクラプトンは、製作意欲に溢れ、早々と次のアルバムのレコーディングまで完了し、またすぐにツアーに出たことが分かります。早くファンに新曲を聴かせたかったのでしょう。本公演でも Singing The BluesとThe Sky Is Cryingを披露しています。特にマーティンとブラッキーで通した1回目の全米ツアーに対し、本ツアーではスライド用にチェリーレッド・フィニッシュのギブソンES-335TD（そう、あのクリーム解散コンサートで使用したギターです）をスタンバイしていました。このギターで粘りのあるスライドプレイを聴かせているのがThe Sky Is Cryingです。その他はアルバム「461」のナンバーをいい感じで散りばめながら、Badge、Little Wing、Layla、Tell The Truthでクリーム時代、デレク＆ザ・ドミノス時代を思い起こさせてくれるという心憎いセットになっています。Badgeには、その後の日本公演で定例化した、エヴァリー・ブラザーズのスタンダードナンバー「All I Have To Do Is Dream」をジョイントし、コーダとして演奏しています。こういった点でも後の日本公演でのアレンジ、ステージングを見据えていたと言えるのではないでしょうか。この日のクラプトンはなかなかの好調ぶりを示しています。1回目の全米ツアー時の泥酔モードは脱しており、張りのあるプレイを披露しています。また、この時点ではバックバンドに女性ボーカルのマーシー・レヴィが参加していました。この後何年にも渡ってクラプトンをサポートし、イヴォンヌ・エリマン脱退後は紅一点で奮闘した彼女の最初期のステージがこのツアーでもありました。二人の女性コーラスのバランスにも耳を傾けてみるのも一興でしょう。突如公開されたJEMSのアップグレードマスター。それをさらにグレードアップし、完全収録の決定版としてお届けする今回のリリース。初回のみの限定プレスCDでのリリースとなりますので、お早めのオーダーをお願い致します。
