Also this week we have arrived two vintage cassette masters from heavyweight tapers living in the UK who are famous for providing Eric Clapton’s treasure source! They belonged to the 1974 comeback national tour, both of which were low-generation sound board masters of PA out which flowed out of the tour staff. Our shop has just released “Tempe 1974” and “Hampton 1974” as a low-gen cassette master from this heavyweight taper. For customers who listened to them, I think that you can understand the degree of upgrade from the pre-launch board, but this time the master did not disappoint. Because it is a network of heavyweight tapers, it will surely be satisfied with this quality which is still fresh even after 44 years passed. The first is a main board with the best stereo sound board recording, except for the last part of the concert held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on July 5, 1974. In Blues Power, traces of tape change made at 0:19 and 7:00 are visible as well as the already-released board, but since there is little sense of incongruity, this is a fault shortcoming. Although there are things that Tell The Truth and Crossroads are not recorded in the earlier stage, this board is only a master cassette, and these two songs are well recorded.

This show went through a warm up gig in Northern Europe, and was in the sixth performance entering tour tour. 今週はまた、エリック・クラプトンの秘蔵音源提供で有名なイギリス在住の重鎮テーパーからのヴィンテージカセットマスターが2つ到着しました！それらは1974年のカムバック全米ツアーのもので、どちらもツアースタッフから流出したPAアウトのロウジェネレーション・サウンドボードマスターでした。当店は先般、この重鎮テーパーからのロウジェネカセットマスターとして「Tempe 1974」と「Hampton 1974」をリリースしたばかりです。それらをお聴きになったお客様には、既発盤からのグレードアップ度がお判りいただけたことと思いますが、今回のマスターも期待を裏切らないものでした。重鎮テーパーの人脈だからこそ入手し得た、44年の時を経てもなお鮮度の高いこのクオリティにはきっとご満足いただけることでしょう。その一つめは、1974年7月5日にペンシルヴァニア州ピッツバーグで行なわれたコンサートの終盤以外の部分を極上のステレオ・サウンドボード録音で収録した本盤です。Blues Powerでは、既発盤同様0:19時点と7:00時点でテープチェンジした痕跡は窺えますが、ほとんど違和感がないのでこれは取るに足りない欠点でしょう。既発盤の中にはTell The TruthとCrossroadsが未収録のものもありますが、本盤はマスターカセットというだけあって、この2曲もしっかり収録されています。
さて、ここでこの日の公演がこのカムバックイヤーでどのような位置づけだったのかを見ていきましょう。

本公演は、北欧でのウォームアップギグを経て、ツアー本番に突入しての6公演目に当たっていました。3年に及ぶリタイアからステージ復帰し、まだ地に足が着いていなかった時期の貴重な音源と言うことができるでしょう。この全米ツアーは、久々の生ステージへの緊張を緩和するために酒に酔っ払って敢行したツアーとして有名でした。そのため本盤の日でも酩酊ぶりが窺えるわけですが、クラプトンのプレイクオリティが低くないことが驚きでもあります。この日のコンサートは、現地ではフェスティバル的に開催されたものだったようで、オープニングアクトにはトッド・ラングレン、ザ・バンドが出演しました。それを受けてのクラプトンがヘッドライナーだったわけですが、自身の憧れでもあったザ・バンドとの顔合わせはクラプトンにとって気分を高揚させる出来事に違いありませんでした。クリーム時代から旧知の間柄だった彼らとの再会に加え、この日がロビー・ロバートソンの誕生日に当たっていたということで、オープニングナンバーの演奏後にはクラプトンが即興でロビーに捧げるバースデイソングを歌っているというご機嫌ぶりです。このコンサート後には、楽屋でロビーのバースデイ・パーティが催され、それにクラプトンも加わって大いに楽しんだとのことです。そんなご機嫌なクラプトンに水を差したのが、Blues Powerでの出来事でした。7月5日、アメリカ建国記念日の翌日であったことから、前日に大騒ぎしたファンがその勢いのまま持ち込んだ花火に火を点けてステージに投げ込んだのです（1:38時点）。この会場はスタジアムでしたので、ステージを設営し、その上にはキャンバス地の布で造られたテントが設営されていました。そのテントの屋根に花火が放り投げられたのです。テントの屋根で火を噴きまくる花火にクラプトンが激怒します（3：40時点）。この時の彼の怒りのアナウンスを記しますと、「F*!k You, you c*&t! Whoever Threw That! Your F-ing Mother! 」、「I’ll tell you one thing…your fucking aggrivation…these fireworks and things like that…NO WAY! It’s SILLY BEHAVIOUR!!! STOP IT!!!!!（「なんてことをするんだ！花火を投げ込むなんて！馬鹿か！」、「一言言っておくよ。こんな愚かな行為はないぞ。やめるんだ！）」です。目撃談によると、この時、別の客がフリスビーを飛ばし、それがイヴォンヌ・エリマンに当たったそうです。エリマンもこの曲の途中で何やらぼやいているのが聞き取れます。こうした出来事の間もバンドが演奏を続けているのはさすがとも言えますが、クラプトンが今日までの長いキャリアにおいて、本番のステージ上で激怒したというのはこの時だけではないでしょうか。楽しいことや憤慨したこと、前半部だけでもいろいろなことがあった珍しい日の記録です。セットリスト的にはTell The TruthとCrossroadsがメドレーで演奏されているという珍しい展開があります。チャック・ベリーナンバーLittle Queenieなどは、先頃クラプトンの伝記映画「Life In 12 Bars」のサントラとしてリリースされたオフィシャル盤に収録された同年のロングビーチ公演のテイクよりもシャープなプレイをしているほどです（あれは相当酔っ払っていたテイクでした）。音質は元より、サウンドバランスも良く、ステレオのセパレート感もしっかりあるこのマスターこそがこの日の決定版と言えるものです。重鎮テーパーのマスターでは、経年による問題からかなりピッチが高かったのですが、それを当店では正常ピッチにきちんとアジャスト。まったく問題のない最高の状態でお届けします。2作とも初回のみの限定プレスCDでのリリースとなりますので、お早めのオーダーをお願い致します。
