The keyboard trio, which was also one of the ultimate forms of rock. Another treasure of “THE WORKS Tour”, where the highest unit EL & P in history has reached maturity, is born.
It was “November 8, 1977 Madison performance” that was imbued with such a work. It is an excellent audience recording that conveys the whole picture. This is EL & P in 1977/1978. From the conclusion, the Madison performance of this work is “trio alone”. It was the 6th performance of “Trio # 3b”, one week after the release of “Works Volume 2”.
This show has long been known to exist among core collectors, but it has never been distributed to the general public. The reason is quality. It wasn’t noticed because the masterpieces were lined up in the “THE WORKS Tour”. Of course, this work is also such a master now. .. .. .. Well, there isn’t. It is an upgrade master of the 1st Gene that was recently excavated.
The old master hasn’t spread, so it’s hard to tell even if you make a noise saying “I’ve uploaded it so much!”, But in fact it’s wonderful to listen to it without such prior knowledge. Although it is a vintage audience of the 70’s, the strength of the core that penetrates the clear atmosphere is timeless. Moreover, the freshness of the 1st gene is exquisite, almost no dubbing deterioration is seen, and if the hiss is minimal, the playing sound that stretches beautifully is not distorted. The performances of the three people who are violently rampaging are drawn freshly as if they were recorded yesterday.
Moreover, this work is the highest peak update board that further refined such a new excavation master. Of course, I don’t imitate the freshness of the sound by earning a dark sound pressure. It’s just a remastering that is dedicated to “preparation”. It goes without saying that the pitch is adjusted accurately, but in this case, the adjustment of the stereo feeling is large. Check the left and right channels respectively, not just aligning them in the center. If one of them is dropped high, the balance is adjusted, and the part that was dropped is converted to stereo with the remaining channels. Of course, those parts are finished as seamlessly as possible, and even if you know the corrected part, it is a musical work that you can listen to without discomfort.
You can enjoy such an upgraded sound because it is “Trio # 3” even in “THE WORKS Tour”. The set changed during the tour, and especially after the release of “Works Volume 2”, many new songs have been included. Speaking of live editions before “Works Volume 2”, the press masterpiece “OAKLAND 1977 (Virtuoso 466/467)” is also new to our memory. … And it looks like this. “Piano Concerto No.1 1st Movement” “Knife Edge” “Still … You Turn Me On” has dropped, and “Works Volume 2” number 3 songs and “Peter Gunn” are included in the style. Due to the increase in small items, it has changed to a more compact and fast-paced flow. Speaking of EL & P, historic masterpieces and long improvisations seem to be trademarks, but on the other hand, it is also a beauty that is different from the hundreds of progressive bands. It is also a show where such cheerfulness is pushed to the front.
The permanent preservation press was overlooked because it needed to be corrected, but the essential basic quality is a very high live album. A new masterpiece of “THE WORKS Tour” that further refined the newly excavated 1st Gene Master. Please enjoy it carefully.

これが1977年／1978年のEL&P。結論から言いますと、本作のマディソン公演は「トリオ単独」。『作品第２番』リリースから一週間後となる「トリオ#3b」の６公演目でした。
このショウは、以前からコア・コレクターの間で録音が存在する事は知られてきましたが、一般に流通することはありませんでした。その理由はクオリティ。傑作がズラリと並ぶ“THE WORKS Tour”にあって注目されなかったのです。もちろん、本作もそんな今イチ・マスター。。。。では、ありません。最近になって発掘された1stジェネのアップグレード・マスターなのです。
旧マスターも広まっていないので「こんなにアップした！」と騒いでも伝わらないのが歯がゆいですが、実際そんな前知識なしに聴いても素晴らしい。70年代のヴィンテージ・オーディエンスではあるものの、クリアな空気感を貫いて来る芯の力強さは時代を超える。しかも、1stジェネの鮮度が絶品で、ダビング劣化がほとんど見られず、ヒスも極少なら綺麗に伸びる演奏音に歪みナシ。瑞々しく暴れまくる３人の演奏が昨日録られたかのように新鮮に描かれるのです。
しかも、本作はそんな新発掘マスターをさらに磨き込んだ最高峰更新盤。もちろん、無闇な音圧稼ぎでせっかくの瑞々しさを汚すようなマネはしていません。ただひたすらに「整え」に徹したリマスタリングなのです。ピッチを正確に整えているのは当然として、今回の場合はステレオ感の調整が大きい。単にセンターに揃えているだけでなく、左右チャンネルをそれぞれにチェック。片方がハイ落ちしていればバランスを整え、音落ちしていたパートは残っていたチャンネルでステレオ化。もちろん、そうしたパートは可能な限りシームレスに仕上げており、補整した箇所が分かっていても違和感なく聴き通せる音楽作品なのです。
そんなアップグレード・サウンドで楽しめるのは、“THE WORKS Tour”でも「トリオ#3」だからこそのショウ。ツアーは途中でセットが変わっており、特に『作品第２番』発売以降は新曲を多く盛り込むようになりました。『作品第２番』以前のライヴ盤というと、当店ではプレス名盤『OAKLAND 1977（Virtuoso 466/467）』も記憶に新しいところ。ここではあの新名盤と比較しながら整理してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。「Piano Concerto No.1 1st Movement」「Knife Edge」「Still… You Turn Me On」が落ち、『作品第２番』ナンバー３曲と「Peter Gunn」を盛り込んだスタイル。小品が増えた事により、よりコンパクトでテンポの良い流れに変化しました。EL&Pと言えば、歴史に残る大作や長いインプロがトレードマークのようでもありますが、一方で凡百のプログレバンドとは一線を画す小気味の良さも美点。そんな快活さが前面に押し出されたショウでもあるのです。
補整が必要だったために永久保存プレス化は見逃されましたが、肝心の基礎クオリティは非常に高いライヴアルバムです。新発掘の1stジェネ・マスターをさらに磨き込んだ“THE WORKS Tour”の新名盤。どうぞ、じっくりとお楽しみください。
