Speaking of Hopkins, the legendary name tapers no longer need to be explained. Many people remember PINK FLOYD’s super masterpiece “BOSTON 1975: UNPROCESSED HOPKINS MASTER (Sigma 86)” “BOSTON 1977 MASTER TAPES (Sigma 177)”. EL & P that the master came up with. No way, that such recording will appear 44 years later … ….
Such engraved in this work is “Providence Performance on July 29, 1974”. First of all, let’s check from the whole tour image whether the atmosphere sucked in by this work was of any age.

This is the outline of currently known “BRAIN SALAD SURGERY TOUR”. Because there are obscure points in the record at that time, it is not strict until the number of performances, but maybe you can imagine the approximate flow and scale. Speaking of this tour, the official record such as the traditional “LADIES AND GENTLEMEN” and California · Jam is the standard, but it is “North America # 2”. The Providence performance of this work is a concert that corresponds to the fourth performance of “North America # 3” which was closer to the end than that.
This show was previously known for recording between Coremania, but this work is different from that. It is a new master that exceeds 140 minutes which is much longer than the conventional master which was less than 130 minutes. Just a long and new excavation is a permanent preservation prompt decision, but it is a shock more than that, a sound by a legendary master. This time it appeared Master who Hopkins himself digitized directly from Omoto’s master cassette. Not only the freshness that can perceive the on-site vibe itself, but also because it is a person’s identity, a superb sound is realized with a neat transfer.
In fact, there is no word for the transparent feeling of this work. As a fact, although it is an audience recording, the great cheers are caught far and small, not entering between the band and the recorder. The straight musical tones are extremely clear, and you can feel vividly the Emerson ‘s fingertips now and Gorg’ s gorilli base run. Moreover, the sense of stability is also excellent. Despite the long recording of more than 140 minutes as described above, the clear air feeling does not shake all the time, and it is stable with stability. The paintings of exhibitions that were not included in “LADIES AND GENTLEMEN” are also glossy and neat until the end of “Finale”, and the sound BGM is recorded firmly. It makes me taste the mood of the scene of the circle. Emerson ‘s solo “Piano Improvisations”, “Maple Leaf Rag” familiar with the 1977 live appearance! (Of course, it is not recorded also in “LADIES AND GENTLEMEN”) If it says “North America # 3”, it is famous for the official bootlegged Buffalo performance, but it is no longer a comparison either.
It is a precious article of a craft that is suitable for calling a legend, but the original sound showed disadvantages even though it was extremely small. (Possibly due to the recording position) A bias of stereo feeling, and a slightly stronger bass venue echo. Of course, although it was a dimension that is not problematic at all in general, I would like to permanently preserve it with the ultimate form only for excavation of the masterpiece. Although it felt sorrow, I tweaked the balance and refined the quality as a live album to the limit. Of course, the beautiful ringing is the original sound as it is, and we do not do any managers that impair elegance with forced equalization.

When saying the wonderfulness of EL & P at the height of revived with that sound … …. Of course, there are no special rare songs, but such things are not necessary. Leading the ultimate masterpiece, the apex performances of the darlings of the era who succeeded in squatting for two or three laps on the earth. What kind of words should you put in this wonderful music?

ホプキンスと言えば、もはや説明不要の伝説的な名テーパー。PINK FLOYDの超傑作『BOSTON 1975: UNPROCESSED HOPKINS MASTER(Sigma 86)』『BOSTON 1977 MASTER TAPES(Sigma 177)』を思い出される方も多いことでしょう。かの名匠がてがけたEL&P。まさか、そんな録音が44年も経って登場するのとは……。


これが現在知られている“BRAIN SALAD SURGERY TOUR”の概要。当時の記録にあやふやな点もあるので公演数までは厳密ではありませんが、おおよその流れや規模はイメージしていただけるのではないでしょうか。このツアーと言えば、伝統の『LADIES AND GENTLEMEN』やカリフォルニア・ジャムといったオフィシャル記録が基準となるわけですが、それは「北米#2」。本作のプロヴィデンス公演はそれよりグッと終盤に寄った「北米#3」の4公演目にあたるコンサートです。
実際、本作の透き通った空気感には言葉もない。事実としてはオーディエンス録音ではあるものの、大歓声が遠く小さく捉えられ、バンドとレコーダーの間に入ってこない。真っ直ぐ届く楽音は極めてクリアで、今なきエマーソンの指先も、グレッグのゴリゴリしたベースランも鮮やかに感じ取ることができるのです。しかも、安定感も絶品。前述した通り140分以上の長尺録音にも関わらず、クリアな空気感が終始揺るがず、ビシッと安定。『LADIES AND GENTLEMEN』には収録されなかった展覧会の絵も「Finale」まで艶やかで端正なサウンドが続き、終演BGMもしっかり収録。大団円の現場ムードをじっくりと味わわせてくれるのです。エマーソンの独演の「Piano Improvisations」では、1977年のライヴでお馴染みの「Maple Leaf Rag」も登場!(当然、『LADIES AND GENTLEMEN』にも未収録)「北米#3」と言えば、オフィシャル・ブートレッグ化されたバッファロー公演も有名ですが……もはや比較にもなりません。

本生100%サウンドの体験版『LADIES AND GENTLEMEN』……いえ、それ以上。人類が生み出し得たキーボード・トリオの究極バンドと、伝説の名匠が居合わせた現場。その時、その場の振動をそっくり吸い込んだマスター・サウンドがスピーカーから吹き出す銘品中の銘品なのです。ただの素晴らしいライヴアルバムという次元冴えも超え、ロックの文化遺産と呼ぶしかない1本。どうぞ、永久保存プレス2CDでたっぷりとお楽しみください。
