Elvis Costello’s appearance was a hot topic at the 1990 Bridge School Benefits. At that time, he changed his mind in the previous year, and the album “SPIKE” from the album and the single “Veronica” from the album became a big hit, and the popularity in the United States soared more than ever. For that reason, the appearance on the bridge attracted a lot of attention.
However, Costello at that time broke up with attractions, which had been a long-time backing band, and it was a time when there was no fixed backing band (the new band “Ludo 5” will start in earnest from the following year), and the appearance will be a solo acoustic playing talk. It was a style.

1990年のブリッジ・スクール・ベネフィットにおいて話題を呼んだのがエルヴィス・コステロの出演でした。当時の彼は前年に心機一転ワーナーからアルバム「SPIKE」とアルバムからのシングル「Veronica」が大ヒットを記録、それまで以上にアメリカでの人気が急上昇した時期。それだけにブリッジへの出演は大きな注目を集めたものです。
ところが当時のコステロは長年のバックバンドだったアトラクションズと決裂し、固定のバックバンドのなかった時期（新たなバンド「ルード5」が本格始動するのは翌年から）であり、出演はソロのアコースティック弾き語りというスタイルでした。
ここで彼がオープニングに披露したのが正に「Veronica」。先の理由からアメリカで大ヒットした曲ですので、イベント出演ながら掴みはオッケー。おまけに彼が敬愛するニール・ヤング主催のイベントという事から、当時リリースされたばかりだった彼の新曲「The Ways Of Love」を中間でインクルードさせることでコステロがニールへのリスペクトを表わすという貴重な展開がこうしたイベントならでは。
その一方、当時のコステロは「SPIKE」に次ぐワーナーからのアルバム「MIGHTY LIKE A ROSE」の制作中で、後にリリースされる曲のいくつかを初めて披露したステージであったという点で歴史的な価値も高い。それが「Hurry Down Doomsday (The Bugs Are Taking Over)」と「Couldn’t Call It Unexpected No. 4」の二曲。
中でも後者はアルバムのエンディングを飾った名曲であり、なおかつ現在までコステロがステージで大切に演奏し続けているレパートリー。その記念すべき初演がニール・ヤングのイベントだったとは。初演ということもあってコステロは随所でピアノを外しているのですが、それでも新曲にかけた気合で乗り切っている様子が伝わってきます。
そして彼のセットは「Radio Sweetheart」からのヴァン・モリソン・カバー「Jackie Wilson Said」にメドレーするおなじみの展開で終えますが、90年ブリッジの目玉出演者だけあってアンコールに応える形で定番「Alison」を披露。しかもここでは主催者ニール・ヤングが登場してコステロとハモるというレアな展開に。ここでニールが登場したことからもコステロの特別待遇ぶりが感じられるでしょう。
そもそもコステロの出演時間が30分を超えたということからも、破格の扱いであったことが伺えます。そんな貴重なステージは今回同時リリースとなるニール・ヤング・アンド・クレイジー・ホースのステージと同じテーパーによるもの。それだけに抜群の音質を誇るオーディエンス・アルバム。唯一ピッチが高めという問題もしっかりアジャスト。
オープニングの「Veronica」こそオフィシャルリリースされていますが、それは各年代のブリッジ・ベネフィットをまとめたアルバム用の抜粋でしかも配信オンリー。それどころかオーディエンス録音がコステロ・トレーダーの間にすら出回っていなかったという伝説のステージ。30分の中に貴重な演奏やニールとのコラボが凝縮された貴重なステージを極上音質にてお楽しみください！
