Elton John in 1980 held an outdoor concert that recorded an “estimated 450,000 people” mobilization comparable to the population of Amagasaki City. The official video work out of print that conveys the pattern is decided to be a gift release.
The video work is “LIVE IN CENTRAL PARK”. This is an official multi-camera pro shot taken at a free concert held at “September 13, 1980 New York”. This is Elton John in 1980. For the time being, it was a world tour that crossed the ocean, but there was neither Japan nor Europe. It was a very special itinerary only in North America and Oceania. Among them, the Central Park performance of this work is a highlight of the early stage that gives momentum to the tour. It was the 9th performance of the “North America” ​​leg.
Professional shooting was done only for such a large-scale performance, and it was softened in 1981. It was released on laser discs and VHS, which were still in their infancy, but it was soon discontinued due to the fate of video software at that time. This work is a delicate digitization of the laser disc at that time. Of course, its quality is completely official. If you look at it in a modern way, there is a sense of the times when the know-how of music photography has not been established in the camera work that makes heavy use of Elton’s face, but the image quality / sound quality is excellent. While it is filled with the texture peculiar to analog, the high resolution that VHS cannot do and the sense of stability without uneven running are tremendous, and the beauty of coloring that is completely kept is the same at that time. It is a beautiful image that you can see the scenery of the outdoor concert during the day.

その映像作とは『LIVE IN CENTRAL PARK』。「1980年９月13日ニューヨーク」で開催したフリー・コンサートで撮影された公式マルチカメラ・プロショットです。この途方もないショウはアルバム『21 at 33』に伴うツアーの一環でもありました。まずは、そんな当時のスケジュールを振り返り、ショウのポジションを確かめてみましょう。

これだけの大規模公演だけにプロ撮影も行われ、翌1981年にはソフト化。まだ黎明期だったレーザーディスクとVHSでリリースされたわけですが、当時の映像ソフトの宿命で間もなく廃盤。本作は、そんな当時のレーザーディスクから精緻にデジタル化したものなのです。もちろん、そのクオリティは完全オフィシャル級。現代の感覚で観るとエルトンの顔面ドアップを多用したカメラワークに音楽撮影のノウハウが確立していない時代感が漂いますが、画質／音質面では極上。アナログ特有の質感を湛えつつも、VHSではあり得ない解像度の高さと走行ムラのない安定感は絶大ですし、完全にキープされている発色の美しさも当時そのまま。日中の野外コンサートの風景が目に染みる美麗画像なのです。
そんな映像美で描かれるのは、70年代の名曲群を約１時間に濃縮した特濃なステージ。当時のセットは約20曲あったのですが、ここでは作り込まれた映像作品として９曲がセレクトされています。その内容も整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。フル映像に慣れている現在の私たちからすると１時間は食い足りないところですが、それを補って余りあるのが映像スペクタクル。冒頭にも紹介した通り、この日はフリー・コンサートでして推定45万人に及ぶ大観衆……いや、大群衆がステージの前に集結している。1980年の撮影ノウハウはそのスケール感を捉えきれているとは言えませんが、それでも視界の届く限り途切れない人々の海は凄いド迫力。隅々まで明るい日中ですから、間近な観客１人ひとりの顔も見えれば、遙か彼方の砂粒に至るまでの遠近感もはっきりと分かります。
もちろん、単に群衆が広がっているだけでなく、それを目の当たりにしているからこそエルトンも爆テンション。歌声にも演奏にもハチ切れんばかりのやる気に満ちている。「Your Song」ではドナルド・ダックに扮して登場。自分でも爆笑しながら歌うという悪ノリぶりまで披露するのです。
また、そんなエルトンを支えるバックも珍しい。普段はバンマスを務めるデイヴィー・ジョンストンがアリス・クーパーとツアーに参加していたために不在。代わってティム・レンウィックとリッチー・ジートというツイン・ギター体制でした。２人は百戦錬磨のセッション・ギタリストでもあり、ティムはPINK FLOYDやクラプトン、MIKE+THE MECHANICS等、リッチーはCHEAP TRICKやジョー・コッカー、ダイアナ・ロス等との活動で知られるベテラン。バンド形態にもかかわらずデイヴィーが参加していない唯一のツアーであり、ツインのぶ厚いアンサンブルで甦った名曲群も楽しめるのです。
