今までも「METROPOLIS PT. 2」や名盤カバーで何度も“アルバム完全再現ライヴ”を行ってきた彼らですが、今度ばかりはちょっと話が違う。約130分に及ぶ２枚組のストーリー・アルバム「THE ASTONISHING」を完全再現すると、他の曲をやる時間がない。他のバンドであれば、気に入った曲だけピックアップした通常スタイルか、物語の抜粋コンサート＋代表曲アンコールとするところでしょうが、彼らはなんと人気曲・代表曲を一切排除して、「THE ASTONISHING」の新曲のみで勝負に出た。つまり、GENESISの「幻惑のブロードウェイ」ではなく、PINK FLOYDの「ザ・ウォール」のスタイルを執ったわけです。「狂気」で時代の寵児だったPINK FLOYDならいざ知らず、IRON MAIDENやJUDAS PRIESTでさえ避けた方法論。何とも凄まじいチャレンジング・スピリットなわけですが、本作は、その挑戦を初めて世に問うた初演「2016年２月18日ロンドン公演」を収めたオーディエンス・アルバムです。
このライヴは、イギリス在住の巨匠テーパーが録音した「THE ASTONISHING WORLD PREMIERE（Shades 626）」にも収められていますが、もちろん別録音。現在、ネットで話題沸騰中のマスターなのですが、沸騰しているのは「超大作の完全再現」だけではなく、クオリティも話題。確かに客席録音ではあるものの、そのサウンドは見目麗しいクリアさが溢れ出す。ジョーダン・ルーデスのキラめくキーボードやジェイムズ・ラブリエのハイノート、中音域で技巧の限りを尽くすジョン・ペトルーシも素晴らしくクリア。その上で、オーディエンス録音では難しいとされる低音も図太くダイナミック。「THE ASTONISHING WORLD PREMIERE」は、DAT録音の暖かみを愛する巨匠サウンドの個性が感動を引き出す逸品でしたが、本作はもっと一般的。いわゆる最新デジタル機材らしいはクオリティ・サウンドなのです。
そんなサウンドで描かれる本生100％の「THE ASTONISHING」世界は、それはそれは美しくも心震えるドラマの連続。さすがに「Pull Me Under」も「Under A Glass Moon」もないライヴというのは頭デッカチ過ぎじゃ……と、不安もよぎりましたが、実際に聴いてみるとそうはならないから凄い。生演奏バージョンの物語は、スタジオ作を超える説得力で会場を包み込み、アルバム以上の約140分間をめくるめく展開とドラマで埋め尽くす。大胆な挑戦もただの虚仮威しではなく、「これが必要だったんだ」という説得力に充ち満ちており、大団円「Astonishing」の後の満足感には、他の曲は蛇足にしかならないことを痛感させられます。大作映画を見た後に、過去の名画のつまみ食いを観ても仕方がない。そう、まさに映画やミュージカルのような満足感に包まれるのです。
アルバム「THE ASTONISHING」は、“２枚組”・“完全ストーリー・コンセプト”・“フルオーケストラ導入”といったプログレの旨みを凝縮した超大作でした。しかし、その世界は２枚組のスタジオアルバムで終わるものではなかった。ミュージカルでの劇場公開も構想され、ゲーム化まで発表されるなど、爆発的に世界を広げているわけですが、その王道・本道とも言えるステージの上でも、巨大な翼を大きく広げた。
