全体的に、ギターやコーラス、シンセの装飾音の重ねがファイナルほど施されておらず、シンプルな印象を受けるパートが多いことに気がつきます。曲ごとに聴いてみるとディスク1の1曲目のLifting Shadows Off A Dream のサビの部分のドラム･パターンが全然違ったり、Innocence Faded では1:30辺りのパーカッションの重ねがなかったりります。3曲目に収録されているこの段階では「Keymaster」とタイトルされていた’Scarred’では、曲後半のロング･ギターソロはファイナルとは全く違うアドリブソロを聴くこともできます。また Lieでは、イントロにファイナルにないドラムイントロが入っており、2:40のサバス張りのヘヴィなベース主導のリフのサウンド、アレンジは最終形とは全く違う印象を受けます。4分台のメタリカのカークハメットのようなソロもファイナルとは別テイク。収録時間もファイナルより1分30秒も短かったりしますが、実は後半の展開がまだ、製作されておらず、そのままかっこよくエンディングとなります。続くThe Mirror/Lieでは1分目や6:20に代表されるように、ドラムフィルインなどを筆頭にドラムパターンは全体的にかなり違うことがわかります。細部のキーボードのアレンジなども違い、2:23のテンポチェンジ前の違いは興味深いです。さらに6:43からそのままLIEに突入しますが、なんとボーカルなしのインスト曲になります！(当然のことながらアレンジはかなり違います）Caught In A Webはマイクの肉声カウント入りで、ボーカルの入りがオフィシャルに比べて早い。逆に0：36のようにオフィシャルに無い展開部分があったりとアレンジがだいぶ違うのがお分かりになられると思います。またディスク２のBeach house Reality と題された’6:00’では、歌に入る前のS.E.が入ってなかったり、The Silent Manではまだアコースティック・ソロを入れてなかったりと多くの発見ができます。また、ラストにはScarredの初期インスト・ヴァージョンも収録されています。と、ざっと聴いただけでも多くの違いが発見でき、ディープなDTマニアは更なる聴き所を見つけることができることでしょう。限定プレスCDでリリース決定です。

貴重な音源を次々と発表しているLangleyレーベルより、また驚きの1枚がリリースされた。1994年1月から3月に行われた『Awake』セッッションの様子を納めた2枚組みである。『Awake』収録曲のデモ・テイクなど、レコーディング以前のテイクが知られていたのは、わずかに「6:00」、「Caught In A Web」、「Lifting Shadow Off A Dream」の3曲のみだった（Mike Portnoy自身がラジオで紹介した時のコピーは『Winter Rose In The Dream(JailBait Records)』に収録）。しかし、この『Awake Demos』のリリースでアルバム収録曲すべての曲のデモないしセッション・テイクが明らかとなった。既出の3曲に関しては同一テイクだが、聴き比べるとその音質の差は歴然。これまで出回っていたものは、明らかに数世代分のアナログ・コピーを経ていたことがわかる。そのほかの9曲は、テープ・トレーダーにとっても初めて聴くものではないだろうか。おそらく、関係者による流出なのだろう。
ここに収録された12曲のうち、Disc 1「Lie」とDisc 2「Keymaster」だけ明らかに音質が違う。録音も1発録りないしそれに近いラフなものと思われ、非常に荒削りである。まずDisc 1「Lie」はまだ「The Mirror」に挟まれる形になっておらず、単独の楽曲として成立していた時期のテイクと思われる。これがセッション後半に「Puppies On Acid」より発展した「The Mirror」と結合され、アルバムの形になったのだろう。後の1998年ツアーで「Lie」が単独演奏されたが、このテイクを聴くことで、バンドは初期のテイクと同様のエンディングを再度使用したことがわかった。またDisc 2「Keymaster」はまだ歌が入っていないのみならず、演奏もこなれていない。明らかに完成初期のスケッチ的なテイクとわかる。ベーシックなアイディアがスタジオ入り前に存在したほかの楽曲と違い、「Scarred」は1994年にスタジオ入りしてから制作を開始した曲と推測される。そのため、完成型に近いデモ・テイクと同一のテープに収録されていたのではないだろうか。いずれにせよ、楽曲の成立過程を知るのに打ってつけのテイクだ。
既出の3曲のデモ・テイクにもアルバム・ヴァージョンとの違いがいろいろあるが、今回明らかになった他の7曲でも、同様にアルバムとかなり異なる演奏が聴ける。ドラムのフィル、ギター・ソロ、細かいアレンジの違いなどなど、細かく挙げればきりがないが、とにかくすべての演奏がアルバム・テイクとは別である。アルバム・リリース直前に脱退してしまったKevin Mooreの演奏する『Awake』収録曲のテイクは、アルバム以外ではここに収録されたものしか聴くことができない。マニアはマスト・ゲット！
