This week, we are releasing the culmination of the studio recording source of Derek & The Dominos, which is also the band that produced the masterpiece “LAYLA AND OTHER ASSORTED LOVE SONGS” and is also known as Eric Clapton’s career high! Speaking of the best of their studio recording, of course, is the album “LAYLA~”, but from 1970 when it was released to the present, it has been released while each country record, remaster, reissue and upper media were still released. In addition, “the sound image that conveys the passion of the performance in a straight sound with clear sound quality that has the warmth that makes you feel the warmth of the tree in the fullest and eliminates all intentional mastering” is the best between acoustic mania and rock mania. 1970’s original British original LP, which is evaluated as sound quality. The original master of the original, mixed down into stereo from the UK multi-track master used as the master of the lacquer board, is recorded on disc 1. And the “golden” coupling that recorded the session sound source of the second album, which was left unfinished due to the band collapse, from two types of mix masters on disc 2.

■The UK master, which is said to have the highest sound quality, is recorded directly from the multi-track master copy!
Both masters are direct copy masters acquired by the British-owned heavyweight taper familiar with Clapton related through many years of strong research power and connection with officials, naturally needle drop from LP board and already issued board Not a copy. It is a well-known fact among enthusiasts that there are two types of masterpiece “LAYLA~”, UK master and US master. Currently remastered and reissued, all normal media CDs, gold CDs such as Mobile Fidelity, SHM-CDs, SACDs, DVD audios, and Blu-ray audios are produced using US masters. In other words, you can only listen to the original UK master in the situation where only the heavy vinyl LP set in the “UK Deluxe Edition” and the “Super Deluxe Edition” released to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the release of the original album If you are a detailed enthusiast, you can understand that neither of them is the same. Moreover, the fact that member Bobby Whitlock revealed last year is that the UK master was the one who sent the rough mix of the unfinished US master to the UK in a hurry to release. In other words, the members themselves revealed that the mix of the UK master was different from that of the US master. This time, a copy of the UK master with the highest sound quality and a different mix was obtained by the heavyweight taper this time.
But how is the UK Master different from the US Master? Bobby Whitlock testifies that the “rough mix of the unfinished US master” became the UK master, but when I heard it, the localization of each instrument and vocal was the same as that of the US master. However, the only unmodified parts of the rough mix are that the staff’s voice is recorded before the song of Tell The Truth and It’s Too Late, and that the triangle is mixed in Thorn Tree In The Garden. And the sound image expresses the passion of the band in a gentle feeling compared to the mastering US master that makes you feel sharp and powerful, is it a characteristic of the UK master? Sound quality and sound image are only a matter of listener preference, but the fact that too many listeners support the UK first edition LP is worth noting even if you look at the “listening comparison report” on the net. Especially with the main board that was directly copied from the multi-track master, there is of course no scratch noise that cannot be avoided when the LP for the first board is played. The needle sound of the analog board is good for the times, but the strength of this board is that you can concentrate on watching the UK master without it.

■The whole picture of the “phantom” second album session is recorded from two official mixmasters!
And the second album session sound source of Disc 2. Regarding these, there are several already released boards, and it can be said that they are famous sound sources among enthusiasts of Clapton. However, the advantage of this board is that it is recorded directly from the two kinds of official mix master tapes that Shigeru Taper acquired this time, as with Disc 1. In April-May 1971, due to the sales failure of the album “LAYLA-“, they were members of Dominos who gathered in the studio again to try to get back, but due to the absence of duein Allman who played a role of catalyst in the previous work In addition, members from LA, South of the United States, couldn’t get used to the cold London studio, so they continued the session without the expected results. Ultimately, it is said that the band collapsed as a result of the conflict between Clapton and Jim Gordon on the drum. You can see the whole picture up to that point from the sound source left here. Five songs of this sound source were recorded as the centerpiece of the official anthology box “CROSSROADS” released in 1988 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Clapton’s debut, but it was a version remixed by another engineer at that time .. On the other hand, what is contained in this board is Andy Johns who was the engineer in charge at the time in 1972 (the younger brother of famous producer Grin Johns, who was also in charge of Led Zeppelin and Stones at that time) This is a 1974 version that was mixed with a basic track that was mixed by, and Atlantic Records who wanted to make this sound source see the light of day, ordered by Tom Dowd, the producer of “LAYLA~”. I’m also surprised by the fact that Domino’s second album also went under the surface in the year of the Clapton comeback, but the heavyweight taper got the master of these official mixes. Pictures of these two master tape boxes can be found in the official Clapton book “ERIC CLAPTON: DAY BY DAY 1963-1982” (original edition) (the name of the engineer who mixed them is also specified).

■Here are the factors that predict the collapse of Dominos!
The 71 year version mixed by Andy Johns is a basic track without vocals. It seems that the tracks were organized before the next song entry. It’s valuable in the sense that you can hear an instrumental version of the song that saw the light of the day, but the two takes of Snake Lake Blues are the focus. Both are different from the official release take. Official release takes are superior to Clapton’s solo, but it seems to me that Clapton was making trial and error, such as trying with both minor and major keys, which is intriguing. In 1974’s Tom Dowd Mixmaster, the recorded songs were organized and lined up at once. The song name is at the stage of what is called a working title, but it is clear that a remix was attempted in 1988 based on the five officially released songs. While the official release version had a very echo finish, this master has a straight finish without any effects. It should be noted that this sound source has hidden factors that led to the collapse of Dominos. 10.11.20. contains vocals of a person who seems to be Jim Gordon. It is neither Clapton nor Whitlock voice quality, it is a erasing method by Karl Ladle that never sings, but this is a number by Equal, Jim Gordon. It is said that he was hiding and recording songs for his solo album when recording the album “LAYLA~”, and it is known that some of them were piano coder in the latter half of Layla. However, it seems that his self-revealing desire had reached Max at this point. Because of his innate psychopathic nature, he believes that the sales failure of the album “LAYLA~” was attributed to Clapton’s leadership, and he was exposing his opposition to Clapton. On the other hand, Clapton, who had no intention of being a leader and wanted to run the band democratically, agreed to record the three songs Gordon brought with him. However, what you can tell is the poor quality of Gordon’s music, the lack of vocals, and the odor of amateurs. It is a work level of a second-class singer-songwriter, and it is a big question whether Clapton really intended to record Gordon’s song in the second album of the death and reincarnation following “LAYLA …”. Gordon, who is happy and recording his own song, is not satisfied with Clapton. Clapton cannot dismiss it even though he is dissatisfied. Got To Get Better In A Little While Clapton really intended to record Gordon’s number, which is remarkably poor in quality, mixed with the number that gives the original tension of Dominos like Evil? Clapton struggles between the survival of the band and the ego of Gordon. I think it was one of the big fights that took place during the recording that led to the collapse of the band when it finally burst.

■What was Clapton’s intention to wow play?
In addition, among the 9 songs that are candidates for inclusion excluding Jim Gordon’s songs, there are 6 instrument version numbers with no lyrics, except Snake Lake Blues, which was originally recorded with the intention of being an instrument. It is a song that seems to have evolved from a jam in the studio, and although the composition is tentative, it is a level that grasps the cloud that I could not imagine at all how I intended to put the lyrics. I have to say that the quality of these is remarkably lower than that of “LAYLA~”. In addition, the lyrics have been completed, and Clapton uses a wah pedal with playing four of the five songs released in “CROSS ROADS” in 1988. I also use it in High, which has not yet completed the lyrics. Why didn’t he use the wah pedal in “LAYLA” at all, so why did he use so much in the second album? That’s because I wanted to change the play action. So why did you want to make a difference? In other words, I think that I thought that the charm of the music could not be brought out with normal guitar play. I didn’t have to worry about that in “LAYLA~”, but I think it was a problem for Clapton here. I can even say that there are traces of Clapton’s suffering here.

Considering the above matters, it may be said that you can learn the story of the collapse of Dominos on this board. Rock fans and Clapton fans would like to see this band’s final appearance where the band that produced that masterpiece disappeared in just one year.

This work that covers all of the studio recordings left by Derek & the Dominos in the band name from the official master tape. In Clapton’s career, it will be positioned as an important work following the Clapton Mix of the first solo album released recently by our shop. Please do not miss it.

Release of ultra-important title “LAYLA UK MIX: MULTITRACK MASTER” As a bonus disk for the first week only, this week’s gift item is a famous board “Layla” which was released on Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab on 24K gold CD. And Other Assorted Love Songs”. The best piece for comparison work with “UK MIX”.

Well, it has been said that Gold CD = highest sound quality, but let’s review Gold CD once again. In 1987, American Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab (MFSL) borrowed a two-track stereo master tape from a major record company, and under the license contract of limited number production, newly developed gold vapor deposition technology. Making full use of it, we started to produce gold CDs. Aluminum is usually used for the deposited film in CDs, but there was a theory that depending on the storage environment, it will corrode in 20 to 30 years, making it inaudible. On the other hand, 24K gold is more resistant to corrosion and has a higher reflectance than aluminum, so the reading of a CD player is stable, the digital noise generated in the servo circuit is reduced, and the improvement of sound quality can be expected. 24 gold is to be used. With this technology, MFSL has begun to release many name plates under the brand name “Ultradisc” on gold CDs. Initially the press was done in Japan, but then moved to the United States, at which time the brand name was changed to “Ultradisc II”. In addition to being produced from the original stereo master, since it has a 24-gold vapor deposition film specification, it can be reproduced by the audiophile in the 90’s as an exact reproduction of the sound at the time the album was recorded. There is a history of being acclaimed. This “Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs” was released in September 1993 as a work in the “Ultradisc II” series. This is, above all, the extent of stereo. Although the conventional CD with the same title was a stereo, it had a fairly narrow stereo feeling, but this Gold CD has spread to the left and right channels up to 180 degrees. And as for the sound, the CD usually emphasizes the high range and the low range, and the middle range is poor, so it was a “don’t feel” impression that is often said, but this gold CD has a good balance in all ranges. The impression is harmonious. And above all, the clearness of the delicate sound of the vocals is outstanding. In other words, this can be said to be the result of faithful digital conversion to the analog master. Of course, the master used on this board is the original US board master tape used by Atco Records in 1970 to produce this work. As the enthusiast knows, most American artists’ original master tapes of most artists were burned down by the big fire in 2008 at Universal, so “Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs” , It is no longer possible to remaster the US Master with higher sound quality than this one. Even if I want to remaster, I don’t have a master tape. You all know how great the content of this work is. It is a masterpiece of the century when Duein Allman, who died in an accident accident the following year, met Clapton like destiny and caused a chemical reaction to this band by playing guitar that scatters Clapton and sparks. MFSL’s famous masterpiece “Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs” that reproduces the sound faithful to analog with a 24K gold CD using the original US stereo master that has become a phantom. Of course, this is a comparison target with “”, but it is said to be “the best Leila” among enthusiastic music fans. Please try to experience.
