This edition is a CD version of the unpegged reel-to-reel version of the famous album “LAYLA AND OTHER ASSORTED LOVE SONGS” released in December 1970 in the United States. This reel-to-reel media was one of the formats for listening to music in ordinary homes in the late 60’s and 70’s. It was large, had good stereo recording, and did not generate scratch noise like a record because of its structure. It disappeared from the market earlier than the cassette tape for reasons such as the price). That rare reel work that was released in 1970 is now available. The sound quality is a thick sound peculiar to the reel, and the tape condition is quite good, so there is almost no sound dropout due to tape damage, and there is no sound quality deterioration due to multiple playbacks, so it was a miraculous vintage good product. Since the pitch was affected by aging, we adjusted it to match the pitch of the “25th Anniversary Remix & Remaster CD”. I hope you will enjoy the analog chic and warm sound that revives that era on this board. This is the powerful “LAYLA”.
[While using the US original master, the charm of the sound peculiar to open reels! ]It is known that “LAYLA AND OTHER ASSORTED LOVE SONGS” had two versions, a UK original master and a US original master, and was released in each country. The fact that Bobby Whitlock, who was a member, revealed that Polydor, who was pressed for a UK release date during production, sent the unfinished US master (rough mix) to the UK. Therefore, we were able to confirm that the UK original version contains the voice of the conversation in the studio before Tell The Truth and It’s Too Late, which is in the middle of production. In the later completed US master, these voices were removed. And only for the masterpiece of the century that represents Clapton’s career, rock mania and audiophile have listened and compared each master and each format on the net until today. It is a verification of “which master, which format differs in sound quality, and which one has the best sound quality?” As a result of synthesizing the opinions of those maniacs, it is said that the UK original LP board is the most “warm sound quality that is gentle on the ears and has a good high range”. However, the perception of “sound quality” varies from person to person, and to be honest, different people have different tastes. On the other hand, the US original LP disc is mastered around the mid-low range, and based on cutting technology, it gives a fresh impression, and by making a louder sound than the UK disc, the US original in terms of power. There are many voices pushing the board. In particular, the US master has an exquisite balance between the atmosphere of Miami’s criteria studio and a moderate reverb effect. There is an opinion that it is a thing. By the way, there are many opinions that the German LP and Japanese LP at that time lacked freshness due to the impression of muffled and muffled sound. This is probably due to the change (deterioration) of the sound due to the secondary use of the US master used in both. Interestingly, although the US master was used for this reel-to-reel version, only the bass is moved to the left, and the other instruments are distributed quite extreme left and right depending on the song. The point is that it is a version close to the master. If you listen to it, you will understand, but the impression is quite different from recent CDs. In other words, there was a version of “LAYLA ~” that can only be heard on this reel-to-reel. A unique thick analogue sound that differs from the US and UK LPs. I think this “LAYLA~” is worth listening to even if you’re not a maniac. Please try to slip back in time to those days when it was not dominated by digital.
★The sound quality is thick sound peculiar to the reel. The tape is in very good condition, so there is almost no sound dropout due to tape damage, and I don’t think there is any deterioration in sound quality due to multiple playbacks.
★A version where only the bass is moved to the left, and the other instruments are distributed extremely left and right depending on the song. The impression is quite different from recent CDs.
★The tape and box of this reel were the same as the discogs photo below. I think that’s the only and most valuable thing. (It seems that there are no other tapes in such good condition.)
【激レアかつヴィンテージなリール・トゥ・リールバージョンの復刻盤】
本盤は、70年12月にアメリカでリリースされたあの名盤「LAYLA AND OTHER ASSORTED LOVE SONGS」のアンペッグ・オープンリールバージョンをCD化したものです。このオープンリールというメディアは、60年代後半～70年代にかけて、一般家庭で音楽鑑賞する際のフォーマットの一つだったもので、カセットテープよりも幅広なテープなため、当然音情報を記録するアロウワンスも大きく、ステレオ録音でかつ音が良く、構造上、レコードのようなスクラッチノイズは発生しない等メリットは大きかったのですが、再生時の手間や曲跳ばしの困難さ、高価格（ハードウェアも高価格）という理由等からカセットテープよりも早く市場から姿を消してしまいました。70年に発売されていた、その激レアなリール作品がこのたび入手できたというわけです。音質はリール特有の太い音で、テープ状態がかなり良いのでテープダメージによる音落ちはほぼ無く、複数回再生による音質劣化も無いという、奇跡的なヴィンテージ良品でした。ピッチについては経年による影響があったため、当店では「25周年記念リミックス＆リマスター盤 CD」のピッチに合わせて調整しました。本盤であの時代を甦らせるアナログチックでウォームなサウンドを是非味わっていただければと思います。迫力満点の「LAYLA」です。
【USオリジナルマスター使用ながら、オープンリール特有のサウンドの魅力！】
「LAYLA AND OTHER ASSORTED LOVE SONGS」については、UKオリジナルマスターとUSオリジナルマスターの２つが存在し、それぞれの国でリリースされていたことが知られています。メンバーだったボビー・ホイットロックが明かした事実としては、制作中の当時、UKでのリリースの締め切りを迫られたポリドールが、未完成のUSマスター（ラフミックス）をUKに送ったとされています。従って、UKオリジナル盤には、Tell The TruthとIt’s Too Lateの前にスタジオでの会話の声が収録されているという制作途中の状態が確認できました。その後完成したUSマスターでは、これらの声は削除されていました。そして、クラプトンのキャリアを代表する世紀の名盤だけに、ロックマニア、オーディオマニアによってネット上でも各マスター、各フォーマットの聴き比べ検証が今日まで行なわれてきました。「どのマスター、どのフォーマットの音質がどう異なり、どれが最も音質が良いのか？」という検証です。それらマニアの意見を総合したところ、最も「温かい音質で耳に優しく、高音域の抜けの良い」のがUKオリジナルLP盤とのことです。しかし、「音質」の捉え方は人様々で、好みの音は人によって異なるのが正直なところです。一方で、USオリジナルLP盤は、中低域を軸としたマスタリングで、カッティングの技術に拠り、鮮度が高い印象を与え、UK盤よりもラウドな鳴りをすることで、迫力の点でUSオリジナル盤を押す声も多いのです。特にUSマスターは、マイアミのクライテリア・スタジオの空気感とほどよいリバーブ効果が絶妙のバランスを備えており、UK盤ほどの高音の抜けは感じられないものの、十分な抜けがあり、レコーディング地の利を表わすものだとの意見があります。因みに当時のドイツ盤LP、日本盤LPはモコッとした、こもった音の印象で、鮮度に欠けるという意見が多いです。これはどちらでも使用されたUSマスターの二次使用による音の変化（劣化）が原因でしょう。興味深いのは、今回のリール・トゥ・リールバージョンに使用されたのはUSマスターであるにもかかわらず、ベースだけは左に寄らせ、他の楽器は曲によって結構極端に左右配分しているUKマスターに近いバージョンになっている点です。聴いていただければ判りますが、近年のCDとはかなり印象が異なります。つまり、このリール・トゥ・リールでしか聴けない「LAYLA～」のバージョンが存在したということなのです。US盤LPともUK盤LPとも異なる、独自のアナログチックな太いサウンド。この「LAYLA～」はマニアならずとも聴いていただく価値があると考えます。デジタルに支配されていなかったあの時代にタイムスリップしてみてください。
