It was made into a live album on the 30th anniversary of “HYSTERIA”, but that was just a video version of the CD. This work is officially a transcendental stereo sound board recording that completely records the cut songs.

★ Leaked stereo sound board recording of “February 13, 1988 Denver performance”. これが絶頂“HYSTERIA World Tour”の全体像。1988年と言えばゴールデン・ウィーク明けの来日公演も懐かしいところですが、本作のデンバー公演はその３ヶ月前にあたる「北米#2b」の23公演目。年末年始を挟んで繰り広げられた長大な全米ツアーももうすぐ一区切りというコンサートでした。
そんなショウは公式にプロ撮影されて映像作『IN THE ROUND IN YOUR FACE』となったわけですが、それもショウ全曲ではありませんでした。その後、90年代に入ってから関係者から全曲版サウンドボードが流出。公式ビデオにも負けないクオリティに加え、ライヴ全曲だけでなく当日のサウンドチェックまで収録したスーパー・サウンドボードだったのです。それでは、セットリスト整理しつつ超長尺ぶりも実感していただきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。公式ビデオになかった４曲「Don’t Shoot Shotgun」「Let It Go」「Tear It Down」「Travellin’ Band」が聴けるわけですが、それだけではない。この日は「Armageddon It」「Pour Some Sugar On Me」のクリップ撮影も兼ねており、この２曲は２回ずつ演奏。本作は両曲の1stテイクも収録しています。そして、サウンドチェック。「Run Riot」を取り上げることで『HYSTERIA』カラーが一層濃厚になっているわけですが、この曲自体が超貴重。当時の演奏も少なかったですし、2013年のアルバム再現ツアーまで25年間も封印されてしまう激レア曲。その生演奏をサウンドボードで楽しめるのです。
しかも、本作はそんな最長記録を更に更新。流出サウンドボードには収録されていなかった冒頭「Stagefright」のナレーションを公式ビデオから追加収録している。流出マスターは編集途中のために一部のMCにカットはありますが、それ以外は完璧。音楽的には完全なフル・ライヴアルバムが実現したのです。

The main press 2CD is a complete version with a greatly expanded official sound board. It is an absolute board of the entire history of DEF LEPPARD, which symbolizes the climax of the “HYSTERIA” era. As mentioned in the commentary, “IN THE ROUND, IN YOUR FACE” was originally produced as a video work. Therefore, the official video of the discontinued version that tells us the “other side” of the main press 2CD is also precisely reprinted and a bonus will be attached.
That’s why this work contains the same “February 13, 1988 Denver performance” as the main press 2CD. The official multi-camera pro shot. Although it is a big decision video at the peak, only VHS was released in Japan, and it has not been made into a DVD yet. Although it has been made into a DVD overseas, there were no subtitles peculiar to the Japanese version here. Therefore, we received a VHS as good as new from a VHS collector and revived it with the highest quality.
After all, this collector’s VHS collection is in an unusually good state of preservation. I don’t know what kind of warehouse complements it, but it’s in a shiny state that doesn’t make you feel the time of 30 years. You can still tell if it’s just the exterior, but when you play it back, there’s no twist, distortion, or even noise in the tape, and the perfect video and audio pops out almost like a laser disc. Until now, Y & T, BON JOVI, GARY MOORE, etc. have been reprinted from this collector’s collection, but this time DEF LEPPARD is also completely perfect, and it is clear as if the essential Japanese subtitles were digitally overlapped. The sharp edge stands out.
The image quality and sound quality revived is DEF LEPPARD in the monster hit “HYSTERIA” era. As you can see in the explanation of the main press 2CD, the set is a concentrated reduction of the two big hits “PYROMANIA” & “HYSTERIA”. A few songs have been cut from the performance on the day, but thanks to that, the purity is even higher. And his brilliance to show off the golden set list is also dazzling. The melody is spun with the momentum of popping, and the performance without enemies spreads to fill the screen wherever you go.
And there is the figure of Steve Clark. This “HYSTERIA World Tour” was not just a heyday, but a joyous tour that Rick Allen returned to, and was Steve’s last world tour. Joe Elliott rushed into a guitar solo with a big smile, “Introducing my best friend, Steve Clark on the guitar!” And he said, “Steve Clark with Gibson’s 18 strings!” Start playing. Because of the Japanese subtitles, you can directly feel the nuance and mood.

本編プレス２CDは、公式サウンドボードが大拡張された完全版。絶頂の『HYSTERIA』時代を象徴するDEF LEPPARD全史の絶対盤です。その解説でも触れましたが、『IN THE ROUND, IN YOUR FACE』は本来映像作品として制作されました。そこで、本編プレス２CDの「向こう側」を教えてくれる廃盤オフィシャル映像も精緻に復刻してボーナス付属決定です。
というわけで、本作に収められているのは本編プレス２CDと同じ「1988年２月13日デンバー公演」。その公式マルチカメラ・プロショットです。絶頂期の大決定映像なのですが、日本でリリースされたのはVHSのみで、いまだにDVD化されていません。海外ではDVD化もされていますが、こちらには日本版特有の字幕がありませんでした。そこで、VHSコレクターから新品同様のVHSを提供していただき、最高峰クオリティで蘇らせたのです。
何しろ、このコレクターのVHSコレクションは、保存状態が異常なほど良い。どんな倉庫で補完しているのか分かりませんが、30年の時間をまるで感じさせないピッカピカの状態。外装だけならまだ分かりますが、再生してみるとテープのヨレや歪み、ノイズすらまったくなく、ほとんどレーザーディスクのように完璧な映像と音声が飛び出してくるのです。今までも、このコレクターのコレクションからY&TやBON JOVI、GARY MOORE等を復刻して参りましたが、今回のDEF LEPPARDもまったくの完璧ぶりで、肝心の日本語字幕もデジタルで重ねたかのようなクッキリとしたエッジが際立っています。
その画質・音質で蘇るのは、モンスターヒット『HYSTERIA』時代のDEF LEPPARD。本編プレス２CDの解説にもありますが、セットは２大ヒット『PYROMANIA』＆『HYSTERIA』の濃縮還元。当日演奏から数曲カットされているわけですが、そのおかげで一層純度が高まっています。そして、その黄金のセットリストを披露する彼の輝きもまぶしい。弾ける勢いでメロディを紡いでいく、向かうところ敵なしのパフォーマンスが画面いっぱいに広がるのです。
そして、そこにはスティーヴ・クラークの姿がある。この“HYSTERIA World Tour”は、単に全盛期というだけでなく、リック・アレンが復帰した喜び溢れるツアーであり、スティーヴの生前最期のワールドツアーでもあった。ジョー・エリオットが満面の笑みで「親友を紹介するよ、ギターのスティーヴ・クラーク！」と紹介してはギターソロに突入し、「ギブソンの18弦を抱えたスティーヴ・クラーク！」と言うと彼がつま弾き出す。日本語字幕があるからこそ、そのニュアンスもムードもダイレクトに感じることができるのです。
他にも曲の逸話や観客への感謝の言葉にも逐一、字幕が付いていきますが、極めつけは「Pour Some Sugar On Me」の紹介MC。ジョーが感慨深げに「この４年間は長かったよ……」と語り出す。「実際いろいろなことがあった。いいこともあれば悪いこともあったけど、最高の出来事といえば……“雷神”リック・アレンが帰ってきた！」と叫ぶシーン。リックが交通事故で片腕を失ったのは1984年12月31日。メンバーチェンジを考えることすらなく、ロック史上前代未聞の専用キットを開発しての復帰を果たし、しかもその第一弾である『HYSTERIA』の怪物ヒットとツアーが大成功。バンド解散まで考えた絶望の淵からの大逆転劇を噛みしめるMCです。

ロック史上、他に類を見ない悲劇と逆転劇を経験したDEF LEPPARD。その喜びをクールに味わうスティーヴ・クラーク最期の姿。単に時代を象徴するライヴビデオという以上に、メモリアルな瞬間にあふれた傑作映像です。本編プレス２CDの映像編でもありますが、本作自体がDEF LEPPARD史に残る大傑作。どうぞ、最高傑作でアル本編と共にたっぷりとご堪能ください。
