本当に最後かも知れないと巷を騒がせたジャパンツアーも、つい先日最終の福岡公演が終了。初来日から46年に及ぶ、長い長い想い出を噛みしめるようなムードに包まれています。その中で本作に収められているのは「2018年10月17日：大阪フェスティバルホール」公演。そう、あの大名盤『MADE IN JAPAN』のメイン会場に帰ってきたDEEP PURPLEに出逢えるライヴアルバムなのです。まずは、最新ツアーの日程からショウのポジションを振り返ってみましょう。

以上、全６公演。今回の関東公演は日本武道館ではなく、幕張メッセのみ。『MADE IN JAPAN』の現場は大阪フェスティバルホールだけでした。それだけに注目度も高く、当初１公演の予定だったのが追加も発表。本作は、そんな大阪２DAYSの初日公演の傑作オーディエンス録音なのです。
そのクオリティは、実に素晴らしいスペクタクル・サウンド。このショウは今週通常リリースされる『OSAKA 2018（Shades 978）』にも収録されていますが、それは最前方２列目の特殊録音。生音さえもがド直球というサウンドが異様な迫力を醸しているのですが、それに対して本作は通常通りの感覚のオーディエンス録音です。もちろん、通常感覚とは言ってもそれはバランスの話であり、クオリティ自体は特級。逞しい芯が真っ直ぐに届き、細かなディテールも手応えたっぷりに楽しめる。あまりに現場の迫力をそっくり捉えているためにピークでややリミッターがかかったりもしますが、それだけに演奏が苛烈になってもビビリはゼロ。パワフルなバンド・サウンドパワフルなままに味わえるライヴアルバムなのです。
そんなクオリティで描かれる伝統会場のフルショウは、46年の想い出がフラッシュバックしつつも、未だしなやかなアンサンブルが素晴らしすぎる。最年少のスティーヴ・モーズでさえ64歳なわけですが、イアン・ギランのシャウトにこそ年輪を感じるものの、逆に言えば年齢を感じる要素がそれしかない。モーズやドン・エイリーの紡ぐフレーズはカラフルで淀みなく、インプロヴィゼーションはどこまでも豊か。それ以上に圧巻なのがリズム隊。ロジャー・グローヴァーのラインは今こそが全盛じゃないかと思うほど歌心に溢れ、イアン・ペイスのドラミングは衰え知らずの手数を誇りつつ、鮮やかなスウィング感が終始乱れない。確かにDEEP PURPLE不変の看板はギターvsキーボードのバトルですし、それは本作でも花形。しかし、ショウそのものをリードし続けていくのはリズム隊。思わず「リード・ビート」等とダサイ造語まで浮かんできてしまうほど見事な演奏が細部までしっかりと味わえる名録音なのです。

「本当に最後なのか」が先行している“THE LONG GOODBYE TOUR”ではありますが、その現場で奏でられる音楽はそんな安っぽいものではありませんでした。往年の名曲でさえも懐メロの域を超えたポテンシャルで演奏している最新のDEEP PURPLE。フェスティバルホールだけに『MADE IN JAPAN』の思い入れも無視できないのですが、単に最新の音楽アルバムとしても素晴らしいのです。そんなフルショウをじっくりとお楽しめる１本。ぜひ、たっぷりとご堪能ください。
