The masterpiece “LIVE IN JAPAN” of the live album that shines brightly in the history of rock. The legendary recording of the performance of “August 17, 1972: Nippon Budokan” that produced the super masterpiece will be reprinted and released on the 2nd press.
In the first place, “What is a live album?” Is it a “work” based on live music, or is it a “record” that tells the truth? Both answers are correct. However, “LIVE IN JAPAN” was clearly a super-masterpiece as a “work”. Although it is said that there is no overdubbing, it is a masterpiece among masterpieces that has been selected from a total of 3 performances of “Osaka 2 times + Tokyo 1 time” and the sounds have been finely organized and refined. However, on the other hand, it is humanity that makes you want to immerse yourself in the “record of truth” because it is an extreme masterpiece. This work is the highest peak audience recording for that purpose. It’s a long time ago, but let’s first look back on the “three days of miracles” when we first came to Japan.

The above is all about the legendary first visit to Japan. “LIVE IN JAPAN” was born after being officially recorded for all three days and edited from there. History has changed. As the “record of truth”, the 6-disc masterpiece “LIVE IN JAPAN COMPELETE (Darker Than Blue 044-049)”, which covers the audience recordings of 3 performances, is also famous, and the performances at Nippon Budokan are also recorded there. I did. However, this work is a completely different recording that appeared after that.
The appearance of this new recording was tremendous. After all, for nearly 40 years since the first visit to Japan, only one type of audience recording at Nippon Budokan was known. Only the recording recorded in DISC 5-6 of “LIVE IN JAPAN COMPELETE”. Moreover, its quality was one step higher than that of the Osaka 2 performance, and the low-pitched chatter was a jarring sound. However, in 2011, 39 years after his first visit to Japan, the second one was suddenly excavated. The sound produced from the actual master cassette that directly sucked in the air that swells in the historical scene easily surpasses the existing ones, and is as clear as the first day of Osaka, which was the highest sound of Japanese performances so far. Moreover, the recording time was much longer, and the tuning scene at the beginning and even the legendary DJ after the performance were completely recorded. It was a great excavation of a wonderland in all respects.
The new recording was released as “LOUDER THAN EVERYTHING ELSE: BUDOKAN 1972 (same title as the main board)” and sold out or discontinued in a blink of an eye. Even in our shop, it was a “live board with constant recurrence requests” competing for 1 and 2. This work is a reprint of such a super-famous board after being meticulously remastered. However, that doesn’t mean it’s a different thing. At our shop, we value the sound and breathing of the original recording even when mastering, but the original recording of this work was wonderful without any modification. It is not impossible to forcibly equalize and finish it with a powerful finish, but it is impossible to improve it while keeping the natural sound without crushing the subtleties of the trivial performance. If you concentrate on listening with headphones, you can feel the sound that is a little more vivid, but that is the best. Beyond that, it could also pollute the Master. That said, this work is still the best in history.
Such a work deserves to be called “the best masterpiece of record”. In terms of sound, it is the highest peak that competes with the first day of Osaka, but the performance is also wonderful. The first performance in Japan is a miraculous performance for all three days, but in this work on the final day, the tension of Japan for the first time is relaxed, and the daring goodness unique to the final day is plentiful. The official edition “LIVE IN JAPAN” has only recorded two songs “The Mule” and “Lazy” from Nippon Budokan because it has collected the famous performances of each song, but the goodness of the whole show is Pikaichi, the first. It is a “miracle in a miracle” that is said to be the best even when you come to Japan.
It’s great just to listen to such a masterpiece with an uncut one-shot penetration (the tape change part in “Lazy” is complemented by another recording and seamlessly completely recorded), but this work can be “experienced” more than that. It’s amazing. This is the third performance in Japan for DEEP PURPLE, but it is the first meeting for the audience. The impact is also clearly recorded, and you can immerse yourself in the feeling of being in the field. The cheers that boil up for each song are also super-realistic, but the true intentions of the audience can also be heard leaking from there. For example, after the guitar solo of “Child In Time”, “Tagi is the best” and “superb” are muttered, and in the drum solo of “The Mule”, “tuning is high” and so on. I couldn’t imagine that the performance in front of me would be included in the ultimate masterpiece that shines in the history of rock, but I was just overwhelmed by the exciting performance, and I felt a straightforward and naked atmosphere.

From the fierce enthusiasm of whistling and screaming, you can hear the voice screaming “Fireball!”, And the comments of the legendary famous DJ are completely recorded. I could hear the comments after “Space Truckin'” and “Black Night” even if it was already released, but this work also includes the DJ re-appearance scene after the end of “Speed ​​King”. そもそも「ライヴアルバムとはなにか?」。生演奏を題材にした「作品」なのか、それとも真実を伝える「記録」なのか。その答えはどちらも正解なのでしょう。ただ、『LIVE IN JAPAN』は、明らかに「作品」としての超名盤でした。オーバーダブこそないとされてはいますが、「大阪2回+東京1回」の計3公演からセレクトされ、精緻に音を整理・磨き上げられた名作中の名作。しかし、その一方で極限的な名演であるからこそ「真実の記録」にも浸りたくなるのが人情というもの。本作は、そのための最高峰オーディエンス録音なのです。今さらではありますが、まずは初来日の“奇跡の3日間”から振り返ってみましょう。

この新録音の登場は凄まじいものでした。なにしろ、初来日から40年近くも日本武道館のオーディエンス録音は1種類しか知られていなかった。『LIVE IN JAPAN COMPELETE』のDISC 5-6に収録された録音だけ。しかも、そのクオリティは大阪2公演よりも一歩譲り、低音のビビリも耳障りなサウンドだったのです。ところが、初来日から39年経った2011年になって突如の2本目が発掘された。歴史的現場にたゆたう空気を直接吸い込んだマスター・カセットの現物から起こされたサウンドは、既発を軽々と凌駕し、これまで日本公演の最高峰サウンドだった大阪初日にも匹敵するクリアさ。しかも、収録時間も遥かに長く、冒頭のチューニング・シーンも終演後の伝説的なDJまでもが完全収録されていた。すべての面で驚天動地の大発掘だったのです。
その新録音は『LOUDER THAN EVERYTHING ELSE: BUDOKAN 1972(本盤と同題)』としてリリースされ、瞬く間に完売・廃盤。当店でも1・2を争う“再発リクエストが絶えないライヴ盤”となっていました。本作は、そんな超名盤を細心リマスターで磨き込んだ上で復刻されたものなのです。もっとも、だからと言って「まるで別物」とはなっていません。当店では、マスタリングの際にも元録音の鳴りや息遣いを大事にしているのですが、本作の元録音は手を加えさせない見事なものだった。無理にイコライジングしてド迫力に仕上げることも不可能ではありませんが、些細な演奏の機微をつぶさず、ナチュラルな鳴りをキープしたままで向上させることは不可能。ヘッドフォンで集中して聴き比べれば、やや鮮やかになったサウンドも感じられますが、その程度が精一杯。それ以上は、マスターを汚すことにもなりかねなかったのです。とは言うものの、本作が史上最高盤であることには変わりないのです。
そんな本作は、まさに「記録の最高傑作」と呼ぶに相応しい。サウンド面でも大阪初日と拮抗する最高峰ですが、その上に演奏も素晴らしい。初来日公演は3日間とも奇跡的な名演ですが、最終日の本作では、初めての日本という緊張感がほぐれ、最終日ならではの思い切りの良さもたっぷり。公式盤『LIVE IN JAPAN』は、1曲毎の名演をかき集めたために日本武道館から2曲「The Mule」「Lazy」だけの収録となりましたが、ショウ全体を貫くノリの良さはピカイチで、初来日でもベストとも言われる“奇跡の中の奇跡”なのです。
そんな名演をノーカットの一気貫通(「Lazy」でのテープチェンジ部も別録音で補完し、シームレスに完全収録しています)で聴けるだけでも素晴らしいのですが、本作はそれ以上に「体験」できるから凄い。DEEP PURPLEにとっては日本3公演目ですが、観客にとっては初対面。その衝撃も克明に記録されており、まさに現場に身を置く感覚で浸りきれる。1曲ごとに沸き上がる喝采も超リアルですが、さらにそこから観客の本音も漏れ聞こえる。例えば、「Child In Time」のギターソロの後で「ターギ、最高です」「見事」とつぶやかれ、「The Mule」のドラムソロでは「チューニング高めだよね」等と評しあう。まさか目の前の演奏がロック史に輝く究極の名盤に収められるとは想像もせず、ただひたすらエキサイティングな演奏に面食らい、なんとも素直で丸裸の空気感が漂うのです。
そんな猛烈な現場感に溺れるのがアンコール。口笛と絶叫が飛び交う猛烈な熱狂の中から生々しく「Fireball!」と叫ぶ声も聞こえ、さらに伝説的な有名DJのコメントも完全収録。既発でも「Space Truckin’」「Black Night」後のコメントが聴けましたが、本作ではさらに「Speed King」終演後のDJ再登場シーンまでも収録。ここでそのコメントも書き起こしておきましょう。
