日本公演直前に起きたリッチー・ブラックモア突然の脱退劇により誕生したサトリアーニDP。オフィシャルにはスタジオ作もライヴアルバムも残していないにも関わらず、ランディ・カリフォルニアなどとは違って「Mk 8」「Mk VI」「第7.5期」等々、さまざまな呼び名で“１つの時代”として現代に伝えられているラインナップです。本作は、そんなサトリアーニ時代を代表することになるであろう、極上サウンドのライヴアルバムなのです。良い機会ですので、まずはサトリアーニDPの歩みを俯瞰してみましょう。

以上のように、サトリアーニDPのライヴは日本とヨーロッパの全31公演。日本公演は、まさにサトリアーニDPの初舞台だったわけです。本作は、その中でも「1993年12月３日：大阪城ホール」公演目を収めたオーディエンス・アルバム。当店では、これまでも1993年の記録を数多くご紹介してきましたので、ここで日程と合わせて整理してみましょう。

と、このように数々の名録音群をお届けしてまいりましたが、本作のクオリティは、その中でも群を抜く極上品。今回初登場のオリジナル・マスターをダイレクトにCD化したもので、もちろん既発『BATTLE CASTLE』とも別録音なのです。そのサウンドたるや「まるでサウンドボード」という言葉がそのままCDになったかのよう。既発『BATTLE CASTLE』も素晴らしいサウンドではありましたが、あの傑作をもってしても比較にならない……と言いますか、「サトリアーニDPの最高傑作」とまで謳われた名盤『THE BATTLE RAGES IN YOKOHAMA』さえも超えているのです！
開演ＳＥからして強烈なクリアさはすぐ分かるのですが、それが驚きに代わるのが「Highway Star」イントロでベースが入ってくる瞬間。まるで距離感のないルートの刻み！　しかも、単にダイレクトなだけでなく、１音１音の際立ちと艶やかな響きも美しい。そこへ、これまた距離感ゼロのビビッドな楽音が重なっていく……１つひとつの楽器が登場する度に「オルガンも凄い！」「ギターまで！」と驚きが重なり合い、ついにイアン・ギランが登場!!　もう何万回聴いたか分からないイントロですが、まるで本作のクリア・サウンドを説明するためのアレンジかのようです。
その後も、鉄壁のクオリティは最後まで揺るぎない。ところどころ、リアルな喝采が沸くのでオーディエンスなのは分かるものの、本当にサウンドボード……と言いますか、まるでオフィシャル盤のような超美麗サウンドです。そのクオリティで描かれるサトリアーニDPがまた、なんとも、なんとも鮮やか。当時から「リッチーがいないのは残念だったけど、素晴らしかった」と口々に語られたものですが、23年が経った現在の耳にも凄まじい。高度な速弾きフレーズも披露しますが、それ以上に高度なのはセンス。原曲のイメージをしっかりとキープしつつ、コピーには陥らず、かと言って技を見せびらかすこともない。当時は「バランス感覚」とも言われましたが、単なる分量の問題ではない。明らかに「曲をエキサイティングに」という意識が働いており、奇抜なフレーズでも、まるで元々のアレンジだったかのように的確。それも、ジョン・ロードのオルガンやイアン・ペイスのドラミングと呼応し合い、ギランとのコール＆レスポンスもビシッと決まる。互いが殺し合わず、予定調和でもなく、スリリングに引き立て合う。曲だけでなく、“DEEP PURPLEの生命”までも熟知したアンサンブル。スティーヴ・モーズのヒントにもなったであろう“ハイテク＆DP”の見本が見事に完成している。いかなサトリアーニが天才と言えど、本当に、本当にこれが初合流２公演目なのか……。むしろ、２公演目だからこその緊張感、“リッチー抜きでもやれる！”を証明したいメンバーの情熱が奇跡的に融合した名演なのかもしれません。

臨時ラインナップでありながら、歴史に“一時代”と認められるサトリアーニDP。確かに、ここまで凄いライヴなのですから認めざるを得ない。その歴史的な証拠を史上最高の極上サウンドで記録した“サトリアーニのMADE IN JAPAN”。リッチーよりもテクニカルで、モーズよりもカラフルながら、オフィシャルに残されていない時代の頂点記録。ぜひ、たっぷりとお楽しみください！
