“PURPENDICULAR WORLD TOUR” is often called the best in “after Ritchie”. The gift release decision is a masterpiece video that allows you to fully enjoy the wonderful performance.
Steve Morse, who listened to the wonderful guitar in this performance in Japan, has already joined DEEP PURPLE for more than 20 years. Even in its long history, “PURPENDICULAR WORLD TOUR” is popular for its enthusiastic performance as if to prove “I can do it without Ritchie!”. The response and motivation appeared not only in the performance but also in the schedule, and it was a long tour that lasted for five years from 1994 to 1998. It wasn’t exactly selected from which day to which day was the “PURPENDICULAR WORLD TOUR”, but from the warm-up secret gig to 4 months before the release of “ABANDON”, there were 175 performances. You can see from the number of live shows that it was a super-energetic time. This work is an audience shot that includes the latter half of such a tour, “November 21, 1996, Montreal Performance (Canada)”. From this tour, official videos such as “BOMBAY CALLING” in the very early stage and “LIVE AT MONTREUX 1996” in the first half of the European leg have been released, but this work is the “North America tour” that is approaching the second half. It’s a video right after that wonderful performance in Japan in 1996.
The greatest taste of this work is quality. It is a shot looking down from the second floor seat on the right side of the stage, but the stage spreads to fill the screen without any shadow in the front row. What’s more, the zoom is used so often that you can clearly see the curled hair of Giran fluttering, and nothing extra comes into view. It is the best angle to stare at “DEEP PURPLE only” throughout the show. Besides, the image quality is also excellent. Perhaps it hasn’t been dubbed, the details are clear with the master quality of outstanding freshness. There is no line noise or distortion, and that is exactly what the blood vessels in Mose’s arm and the beard of the late Jon Lord are projected vividly. As with the field of view, the sound of zero obstruction is also great. Since the zoom is used a lot, I don’t know the exact distance from the screen, but the thickness of the musical sound that jumps in directly is really beautiful. Unfortunately (very momentarily) there was a break in the sound so I couldn’t make it into a live album, but it’s a wonderful audience sound with plenty of clearness.
Enthusiastic performance of “PURPENDICULAR WORLD TOUR” drawn with such quality. This is amazing. The new ensemble with Mose has performed more than 120 performances, and the new ensemble is already at its first peak. Not to mention the vivid phrases of Mose, but the breathing feeling with John Lord & Ian Paice who responds to it is amazing. The feeling of groping in the dark has completely disappeared, but I haven’t gotten used to it. It’s different from the tension of 1970-1972, but I enjoy the sympathy of overlapping the phrases “Will you come!”
Giran barking comfortably while looking at them with a smile was also in great shape. Is it “Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming” that really touches my heart? The singing voice grows comfortably, and the guitar that has both a toro tone and a moving passage responds. It is truly a masterpiece that declares the birth of a new era of masterpieces.
In addition, there are many songs that cannot be seen in the official videos “BOMBAY CALLING” and “LIVE AT MONTREUX 1996”. You’ll be amazed by the opening “Hush”, but you can also enjoy the new songs “Vavoom: Ted The Mechanic”, “Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming”, “The Aviator” and “Rosa’s Cantina” from the masterpiece “PURPENDICULAR”.

25 years have passed since Steve Morse participated. They are still alive even now when they are inducted into the “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame”, but the “PURPENDICULAR WORLD TOUR”, which marked the beginning of the “Mose era” all over the world, is still particularly dazzling. It is a famous image that suppresses such purple brilliance with 100% of the original students. For those who were distracted by “I don’t have Ritchie …” at that time.

今回の日本公演でも見事なギターを聴かせてくれたスティーヴ・モーズも、DEEP PURPLEに加入してからすでに20年以上。その長い歴史の中でも“PURPENDICULAR WORLD TOUR”は、「リッチーがいなくてもやれる！」を証明するかのような熱演で人気。その手応え、意欲は演奏だけでなく、日程にも現れ、なんと1994年から1998年まで足かけ５年にも及ぶ長大なツアーでした。ここでモーズ加入から次作『ABANDON』までの足取りを簡単に見てみましょう。

どの日からどの日までが“PURPENDICULAR WORLD TOUR”なのか、キッチリと選引きされてはいませんが、ウォームアップのシークレットギグから『ABANDON』リリースの４ヶ月前まで、実に175公演。超・精力的な時期だったことがライヴ本数からも分かります。本作は、そんなツアーの後半「1996年11月21日・モントリオール公演（カナダ）」を収めたオーディエンス・ショットです。このツアーからは極初期の『BOMBAY CALLING』、前半ヨーロッパレッグの『LIVE AT MONTREUX 1996』といったオフィシャル映像もリリースされていますが、本作は後半に差し掛かった「北米ツアー」。あの素晴らしかった1996年の日本公演の直後にあたる映像です。
そんな本作最大の旨みは、クオリティ。ステージ右側の２階席から見下ろしたショットなのですが、前列の影が一切入らず、画面いっぱいにステージが広がる。しかも、ギランのカールした髪がなびくのもハッキリ分かるほどのズームも多用されており、余計なものが一切視界に入ってこない。ショウの間中、“DEEP PURPLEだけ”をたっぷりと見つめられる極上アングルなのです。その上、画質も素晴らしい。ダビングを経ていないのか、鮮度バツグンのマスター・クオリティで細部までクッキリ。線ノイズや歪みも入らず、それこそモーズの腕の血管や故ジョン・ロードの髭まで鮮やかに映し出されるのです。視界と同様に、遮蔽物ゼロのサウンドもグレイト。ズームが多用されるため、画面からは正確な距離感は分かりませんが、ダイレクトに飛び込んでくる楽音の図太さは本当に美しい。残念ながら（ごく瞬間的に）音切れがあるのでライヴアルバムにはできませんでしたが、クリアさたっぷりの見事なオーディエンス・サウンドなのです。
そんなクオリティで描かれる“PURPENDICULAR WORLD TOUR”の熱演。これがなんとも素晴らしい。モーズを迎えた新編成も120公演以上をこなしており、すでに新たなアンサンブルは最初のピーク。モーズの鮮やかなフレーズはもちろんですが、それに呼応するジョン・ロード＆イアン・ペイスとの呼吸感が凄い。暗中模索の手探り感は完全に消え去りつつ、かといって馴れ合いもない。1970年-1972年の緊張感とは違いますが、互いに「そう来るか！」とフレーズを重ね合うような交感を思う存分楽しんでいるのです。
そんな彼らを微笑ましく眺めながら、気持ちよさそうに吠えるギランも絶好調。特に胸に迫るのは、やはり「Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming」でしょうか。その歌声はどこまでも気持ちよく伸び、トロけるトーンと感動的なパッセージの両立したギターが応える。まさに、新時代の名曲誕生を宣言する名演なのです。
他にも、オフィシャル映像『BOMBAY CALLING』『LIVE AT MONTREUX 1996』では見られない曲が盛りだくさん。オープニングの「Hush」から驚かせてくれますが、さらには名作『PURPENDICULAR』の新曲群「Vavoom: Ted The Mechanic」「Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming」「The Aviator」「Rosa’s Cantina」もたっぷりと味わえます。

スティーヴ・モーズの参加から25年。「ロックの殿堂」入りを果たした現在も彼らは健在ですが、世界中に“モーズ時代”の始まりを告げた“PURPENDICULAR WORLD TOUR”は、やはりひときわ眩しい。そんな紫の輝きを本生100％で押さえきった名映像です。当時は「リッチーがいない……」ばかりに気を取られてしまった方にも、ぜひ。
