The Joe Lynn Turner era, which has become a singular point in the history of PURPLE, while still producing the masterpiece “SLAVES AND MASTERS” that Ritchie Blackmore professes to be a favorite. Two masterpiece live albums that convey the scene will be released at the same time.
This work is the first one. This is an excellent audience recording that vacuum-packed the whole story of “March 2, 1991 Gothenburg performance”. The two releases released at the same time this week are both European tours, but at different times. This work recorded at such a show is a fresh and powerful audience recording. It’s a so-called vintage recording that reflects the times rather than timeless, but it’s really fresh only for the newly discovered young Gene (1st Gene) master. Anyway, the core is powerful and full of direct feeling, and the burning guitar and the crazy organ are very powerful. In particular, the drums have plenty of mass even for the snare, which tends to be squishy, and the bass drum also kicks up the dosdos and the five viscera.
As a matter of fact, it was too powerful and balanced now. The original sound that appeared on the net seemed to be distorted even at the peak of the drum hitting sound, and it was a sense of stability that was barely distorted, but it was undeniable that the entire ensemble was too close to the deep bass. Therefore, in this work, brush up with meticulous mastering. Relaxation that was too much. Along with that, a margin was created in the midrange, and the extension of the treble became vivid. Of course, although it is within the range of vintage recording, the sound output of DEEP PURPLE is as thin as possible, and a sound that can be comfortably immersed as a music album has been realized.
With such an upgrade sound, the full show that has gained momentum in Europe in Ogatada is drawn. Speaking of the symbol of “Europe # 1”, it is a long professional shot of the Czechoslovakia performance on the first day, so let’s organize the set while comparing.

今でもリッチー・ブラックモアがフェイバリットと公言する名作『SLAVES AND MASTERS』を生み出しつつ、PURPLE史の特異点となってしまったジョー・リン・ターナー時代。その現場を伝える傑作ライヴアルバムが２作同時リリース決定です。
本作はその第１弾。「1991年３月２日ヨーテボリ公演」の一部始終を真空パックした絶品オーディエンス録音です。今週同時リリースの２作はどちらも欧州ツアーでありながら時期がかなり違う。その状況をイメージするためにも、たった８ヶ月間だけ実現した“SLAVES AND MASTERS TOUR”の全体像から振り返ってみましょう。

これが1991年のDEEP PURPLE。ツアー冒頭と終盤にヨーロッパ・レッグが設けられており、本作のヨーテボリ公演は序盤「欧州#1」の19公演目。もう少し詳しく言いますと「欧州#1」の冒頭は東欧（３公演）→中欧（14公演）→北欧（４公演）……という流れになっており、本作は北欧ツアーの２公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
そんなショウで記録された本作は、フレッシュでパワフルなオーディエンス録音。時代を超えると言うよりは時代を映し出すタイプのいわゆるヴィンテージ録音ですが、新発掘の若ジェネ（1stジェネ）マスターだけに実に瑞々しい。とにかく芯が力強くダイレクト感いっぱいで、燃え上がるギターも舞い狂うオルガンもえらくパワフル。特にドラムはスカスカになりがちなスネアさえも質量たっぷりでバスドラもドスドスと五臓六腑を蹴り上げるのです。
実のところ、あまりにもパワフルでバランス的には今イチでもあった。ネットに登場した原音はドラムの打音ピークでも歪みそうで歪まないギリギリの安定感ではあったのですが、アンサンブル全体では重低音に寄りすぎているのも否めませんでした。そこで本作では細心マスタリングでブラッシュ・アップ。出すぎていた緩和。それに伴って中音域に余裕が生まれ、高音の伸びも鮮やかに感じられるようになった。もちろん、あくまでもヴィンテージ録音の範囲内ではあるものの、DEEP PURPLEの出音に可能な限り肉薄し、音楽アルバムとして心地よく浸りきれるサウンドを実現したのです。
そんなアップグレード・サウンドで描かれるのは、大票田のヨーロッパで勢いを高めてきたフルショウ。「欧州#1」の象徴と言えば、初日チェコスロバキア公演の長尺プロショットでしょうから、比較しながらセットを整理してみましょう。

そして、そんなセット以上に素晴らしいのが演奏そのもの。新ラインナップも19公演目ということでエンジンも暖まり、快調な全力運転が炸裂。特にリッチーはノリにノっており、冒頭の「Burn」から心くすぐる遊ぶフレーズを次から次へと繰り出してくれるのです。そして、練度の向上は自在な遊びに直結してしており、「RAINBOWじゃなくDPだ！」と言わんばかりの即興的ムードも美味しい。ツアーの定番ネタになっていく「Hey Joe」や「Blues」も盛り込まれるようになっています。
キャッチーだけれどハードポップではなく、ブルージーだけれどブルースロックではない。リッチーのギターが牽引しつつ、ジョン・ロードのオルガンとジョーのハスキーヴォイスが共存することで生まれていた独特な英国ハードロック。その稀少なステージを現場体験できる新発掘1stジェネ・マスターです。どうぞ、じっくりとご堪能ください。
