9年ぶりのソロツアーとして話題を呼び、数々の名録音を生んできた“RATTLE THAT LOCK TOUR”。その最新録音にして、ネットにも出回っていない極上のマトリクス・アルバムが到着しました。
本作が録音されたのは「2016年4月24日ロイヤル・アルバート・ホール(RAH)公演」。この伝統会場と言えば、昨年9月・10月のヨーロッパレッグのハイライトでも5公演が行われたのも記憶に新しいところ。当店でも『ROYAL ALBERT HALL 2015(Amity 334)』としてご紹介いたしました。実は、“RATTLE THAT LOCK TOUR”でのRAHコンサートは全10回。「2015年秋の5公演」「2016年4月の1公演」「2016年9月の4公演」で、本作は、その「2016年4月の1公演」のオーディエンス・アルバムなのです。また、このコンサートは通常ツアーではなく、若年性癌患者を支援するチャリティーイベント“TEENAGE CANCER TRUST 2016”のための特別パフォーマンスでもありました。このイベントは2000年から行われており、かつてギルモアも参加したことがある。今年は4月19日から24日までの6日間に日替わりでコメディアンやミュージシャンが出演。JOHN BISHOP、THE VACCINES、SIMPLY RED、BRING ME THE HORIZON、NEW ORDERと続き、ギルモアは最終日の出演となりました。
そんな特別パフォーマンスではありますが、内容は“RATTLE THAT LOCK TOUR”そのもの。セットリストも「1部+2部+アンコール」の3部構成も、先月までの北米レッグ終盤と同一。メンバーも基本は同じで、バック・ヴォーカルがレギュラーのルイーズ・クレア・マーシャルに加え、南米日程だけだったルシータ・ジュールも参加している程度です。
しかし、これまでと同じではないのはサウンド。今まで“RATTLE THAT LOCK TOUR”から何作もレポートして参りましたが、それらの大半はフロイド研究の世界的権威が厳選し、リマスターしたもの。今回もその大家から提供されたのですが、本作は大家自らの手によって2つのオーディエンス録音をマトリクスされた特別な1本なのです。その最大の旨みは音の深み。2つの録音の残響が組み合わさり、得も言われぬ艶やかな響きを生み出しているのです。もちろん、本作が残響まみれのボケ・サウンドなわけではありません。元々の録音も大家の眼鏡に適うだけはあって残響の少ないクリア・サウンドでしたが、そんなわずかな残響が複合的に組み合わされることで立体感を醸しつつ楽音も3D映像のように浮き立っているのです。
この美しさを光に喩えるなら、ブリリアント・カットのダイアモンドでしょうか。極めて透明度が高くても平坦ではガラスと同じ。光が屈折したとしてもレンズと変わりない。しかし、カットが複雑になると屈折は様々に折り重なり、透明感は人の魂を吸い込む輝きへと変貌する。本作の楽音の艶やかさ、ベルや小鳥のさえずりの立体感、そして大歓声の空間感覚……まさに“輝きの音”。「Shine On You Crazy Diamond」のエンディングで吸い込まれていくようにフェイドするサックスの音色ですら深い深い輝きを湛えているのです。こうした効果は、マトリクスすれば必ず得られるというものではありません。あまりに違う録音では良さを殺し合ってしまいかねませんし、似すぎていてはほとんど効果がない。単に“似てる”・“似てない”だけでなく、互いが調和する方向性も大切。ブリリアント・カットが計算された角度で生み出されるように、2つの録音の音質・個性・指向性が調和し、それをしっかりと理解した人間によって組み合わされなければあり得ないもの。フロイド研究の世界的権威だからこそ、オリジナル録音の可能性を見抜き、その可能性を絶妙なマトリクスで形にし得た。まさに希有な大傑作なのです。

人間は2つの目で見るから奥行きを感じられ、2つの耳で聞くから空間を感じられる。本作は、空間感覚に優れたオーディエンス録音を重層的にすることで、さらに多次元な音楽世界を描き出している。このサウンドは、伝統会場RAHの音響だからこそ生まれたことは間違いありませんが、逆にRAHのいかなるポジションで体験しても味わえないものです。輝く音の異空間で描かれる“RATTLE THAT LOCK TOUR”の世界。どうぞ、あなたもたっぷりとご堪能ください。
