“ZIGGY STARDUST”時代に実現した伝説の初来日公演。そのナンバー１録音が最新マスタリングで蘇りました。本作は全９公演だった1973年ジャパンツアーのうち、２公演目にあたる「1973年４月10日・東京厚生年金会館」公演を収めたオーディエンス・アルバムです。かつて「THE ZIGGY STARDUST JAPAN TOUR（MASTERPORT-206）」として初めて世に出た録音で、当時のレコード会社スタッフが録音したとされるオリジナル・マスターをダイレクトに使用したもの。登場した当時は、長らく「録音はまったく存在しない」と思われていた“東京２日目”の出現に世界中のマニアが色めき立ち、あっと言う間に完売になりました。しかも、この録音は単なる初登場ではありませんでした。そのサウンドがとんでもなく素晴らしく、すべての初来日録音でも一番。それも他を圧倒的に引き離すズバ抜けたクオリティだった。いえ、日本だけでなく“ZIGGY STARDUST TOUR 1982-1973”全体でもトップを争うサウンドだったからこそ、世界が驚いたのです。
本作は、そのオリジナル・マスターから再度デジタル化し、丁寧にマスタリングしたもの。「THE ZIGGY STARDUST JAPAN TOUR」がいかに“初来日ナンバー１”ではあっても、そこは1973年録音。高音質とは言っても、“当時としては”の枕詞が必要なものでした。しかし、今回は中高域に寄っていたバランスを整え、ところどころ爆音気味にもなった低音も調整。もちろん、コンプレッサーでムリヤリ迫力を出すようなことはせず、あくまで“楽音１つひとつが美しく聞こえる”をテーマに、当時の自然な鳴り、マスターが現場で吸い込んできた質感が正確に伝わるようにいたしました。そうして蘇ったサウンドは、“当時としては”の枕詞がいらないハイクオリティ・サウンド。もちろん、「まるで最新デジタル録音のよう」ではありません。そこには豊かで暖かいヴィンテージな空気感ががたっぷりとあり、それでいてキリッとした鮮度が美しい。“当時としては”ではなく、“当時だからこそ”。1973年にしかないリアリティが香り立つのです。
惜しむらくは、当日演奏されたラストの「Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide」が未収録なこと。オリジナル・マスターにありませんでしたので、録音自体がされなかったのです。クオリティも内容もほぼ完璧な録音でありながら、最後の最後でガッカリ感が残るのは偲びがたい。そこで、1973年ジャパンツアーの最終日、「1973年４月20日・渋谷公会堂」公演の「Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide」をボーナス収録しました。本編「４月10日」には及ばないとは言え、こちらも素晴らしいサウンド。もちろん、本編同様にナチュラル感を活かすマスタリングを施し、違和感も最小限にショウ・エンドの醍醐味を十二分に味わっていただけます。
そんな美しくも豊かなサウンドで吹き出す“ZIGGY STARDUST”時代の輝きこそが素晴らしい。ミック・ロンソンのギターがジギーの世界を描き出し、ミック・ウッドマンジーの叩き出すビートの合間をトレヴァー・ボールダーが舞い踊る。その１音１音が見事に聴き取れる……というより、意識して聴き取るまでもなく鮮やかに描かれていくのです。そして、初めての日本で歌うボウイも絶好調。彼はかねてより日本文化を愛していたわけですが、その興奮だけではない。この日本ツアーは“ZIGGY STARDUST TOUR 1982-1973”でも後期にあたり、北米ツアーから約１ヶ月のオフをたっぷりと取りつつ、最後の母国凱旋の直前に設定されました。飛行機を嫌い、豪華客船で来日したのも伝説的ですが、そんな状況だったからこそアンサンブルも完熟しつつ、コンディションも万全。最終日のロンドンでジギーを封印することになりますが、“やり切った”感にたどり着く直前の、“やり切っている真っ最中”の充実感に溢れているのです。

ロック史に燦然と輝く“ZIGGY STARDUST TOUR 1982-1973”。そのめくるめく世界が、この日本でも実現した。そして、極上のサウンドで残されていた。そんな奇跡を極限にまで輝かせた１枚。日本人の記念という次元を超え、世界が、歴史が刮目する“ライヴ・イン・ジャパン”究極の姿。ぜひ、この歴史的なライヴアルバムを、あなたにも。
