そのサウンドで描かれる“1997年のボウイ”は、本編プレス2CDはまるで違う表情を魅せてくれる。もちろん、ドラムンベース/ジャングルを大胆に取り入れたデジタル路線は同じですし、1日違いのボウイ自身も大きく異なっているわけではない。しかし、サウンドボードさえ凌駕するダイレクト感とド迫力で迫る『SHEPHERD’S BUSH EMPIRE 1997 2ND NIGHT』に比べ、本作の空間感覚は迫力よりも現場を支配するダイナミズム、スペクタクルこそが鮮烈なのです。こう書くとやたらと遠いサウンドをイメージされるかも知れませんが、そうではありません。ボウイの故郷ロンドンだけに巨大なアリーナかと思いきや、名門“シェパーズ・ブッシュ・エンパイア”は、2,000人ほどのホール・クラスで決して大会場ではない。会場に充ち満ちていく感覚がたっぷりとあっても、決して“遙か彼方の楽音”ではない。そして、その空間に集っているのは、故郷ロンドンのファン。とても親密なムードの中で“1997年のボウイ・サウンド”が踊るのです。

本来であれば、本編プレス2CDでは聴けない「V2 Schneider」をフィーチュアして書くべきところなのでしょうが、サウンドの違い自体こそが面白い。同じ録音家、同じ機材、同じ会場がそろっていて、(趣こそ違えど)どちらもクリアな名録音。それにも関わらず、サウンドのニュアンスによってこうまで音楽の味わいが異なるとは。これもまた、オーディエンス録音ならではの面白さ、醍醐味なのです。ド迫力で圧倒する本編プレス2CDに対し、空間を沸かせるダイナミズムの本作。いずれ劣らぬ巨匠の逸品、ぜひ併せてお楽しみください。
